I was wondering if there was a way to permanently ensure you never see the balloon that tells you that there are "unused icons on your desktop". I'm assuming it's some sort of registry hack.

Current problems:A program called PestTrap installed itself and continuously pops up a warning window in the bottom right from the desktop tray.A different icon showed up in the desktop tray that does something similar called MalwareWipe.Something has reset his homepage to securityuptodate.net and any time he changes his homepage, it resets back to securityuptodate.net.There was a popup right as I began looking into the problems he's been having that came up and was talking about a virus called "W32.Myzor.FK@yf" and that apparently his computer is "in danger" and that I should click "OK" to download official Microsoft security updates (or something along those lines).

I'd like to map the key combination Control-D to quit cmd.
Does anyone know how to define what key combinations do in cmd?
For example Control-C kills the current program in cmd and returns the prompt, so where is this defined and how can I map other key combinations to things like quitting out of cmd?

I have an emachine that is a few years old that my high school daughter uses. Today when she was typing a paper for school it got stuck on all caps, then it just quit working all together. I took the keyboard and put it on my computer and it works fine. My keyboard doesn't work on her computer either. I restarted which didn't help. I also retored the computer to yesterday's back up. That didn't work either. This computer does have some age on it but I was hoping to get it to last her until she gets that college laptop.

I have a computer in which I have an XP dual boot on 2 separate hard drives (160 & 120 GB).I have had this particular combination in working order since 4/07. A few days ago my 2nd drive (F) would not boot. I get only a blank, black screen and nothing else NO error messages or warnings. My C drive will boot normally, no problems. The drive is "seen" in BIOS, startup and in my computer on the C drive. The drive is there but the darned thing just will not boot. I have tried using "fixboot" & "fixmbr" to no avail!

OS: Windows XP SP3
Realtime Security Software: Avast!, ThreatFire,
Non-Realtime: Spyware Blaster, SuperAntispyware Scanner (Free Edition), Malwarebytes' Scanner
Firewall: COMODO Firewall Only
My Standard Account got reset for the 2nd time. Firstly, when I didn't use my account for 4 days once I came to log on I realised that 'Personalized Settings' was showing up at the top left hand corner. This came again after I didn't use the account for one day. By reset I mean, the background wallpaper reset to default and the desktop folders not showing up. But when I went into 'Documents and Settings' in my administrator account (which didn't get reset), all the folders were showing up in my C Drive/Documents and Settings/ folder. Once I right-clicked on a folder on my system when this happened for the first time, my system froze. The system also froze when opening any file. This started happening a few weeks after I had installed COMODO Firewall which might be a coincidence even though I don't think it is but all these error messages/dialog box popped up on my account, roughly like 'Invalid or corrupt jarfile...' but on the administrator account none of these errors showed up when this happened on my account. In addition, this issue also happened when I changed my account from Standard to Administrator but this didn't change anything. When this happened for the first time, to solve the issue I made a new account and then copied all my files/folders over from my old account to the new one but because this problem has happened again, I predict that this will keep on happening again on every new account I make. I have also run malware scans which didn't detect any viruses.

I am currently using a Dell Inspiron 8600 running Windows XP(if you need more details, just say so)a few days ago, I needed some more room on my hard drive, so i started uninstalling some old programs and games I hadn't used in a while, and while I was in the "add or remove programs" anyway, I uninstalled a few things that haven't been used since I got the computer almost three years ago.

I used Win98SE before installing WinXP Pro about a year ago. I have 2 internal hard drives and am running a dual boot with 98SE on the C drive and the K drive has the XP Pro. C drive was partitioned at the outset of dual booting and has drives E through H. Drive K which has XP Pro is beginning to fill and in fact, I currently have only 4 gigs available for use. Now the question: can I move some of the unused gigs in drives G and H to the K drive?? Oh, 98SE is FAT32 and Pro has NTFS formatting. If the answer is yes then, of course, I will need to know how. And as usual, TIA.

How do I create network shortcuts in My Network Places? There are several computers on my network and on them, specific specific drives and specific folders that I use frequently. Recently I noticed that my "C" partition, which ONLY has the "XP Pro" OS and a few related programs on it, has gone from 50% UNUSED space down to 35%. I have not added anything, except MS automatic downloads. There was one a week or so ago that seemed large. Could that be the cause of the increase? Are there files that 'grow' unnoticed that can be removed?I understand that once the "C" disk (partition) is filled beyond 50%, "XP" progressively slows down. I do not want that to happen, and purposely created a partition twice as large as the size of "XP." If necessary, I could increase the size of the "C" partition.

About every five minutes or so we get a pop up for our hp 1300 all in one. The main box pop up is as if we just installed new software for a printer, which of course we have not, and then a box pops up that has 1300 trb in the header and then says windows is configuring, and then another box pops up that says 1300 help in the header and then says it is also configuring. Nothing will print and we have one doc in que that we cannot cancel.

This one has stumped me but I believe the cause is related to the million versions of security dlls MS has created pre-and post sp2.
The symptoms:
Linked popups in IE generate a blank window.
Event viewer property pages do not open Services property pages do not work
Javascript "A disk error has occurred during a read operation"
Firefox opens the window but also adds a second blank one for a popup
Links in outlook emails open fine in new window
AOL webmail works correctly new window with email in it
Since this behavior arrived out of the blue and is specific I believe some proximate events were:
Install and de-install Pluck (RSS browser tool)
Install and de-install Java V1.5 SE
AOL homepage saying it was upgrading (AOL mail does work)
To resolve this I have:
Used Iefix to deinstall reinstall IE
Updated to all fixes sans sp2
run sfc /scannow
downloaded current scripting engine from MS
re-registered all suggested dlls for ie6
run current Macafee on everything
gone through MS knowledgebase
I did find two other users having the same problem with an extensive list of possible resolutions, none of which have worked.
