AVI Files Shuts Down The Explorer
Dec 15, 2006
I keep all of my digital photos in one folder. I have a few AVI files taken with the camera. If I navigate to a sub folder that contains one of these AVI files Explorer shuts down with a "Data Execution Prevention Error"
It does not happen if I run in safe mode.

I recently had a bout with spyware. I ran a full Malwarebytes scan and removed all the items it found. I restarted the computer like I was instructed to do and it booted up fine. explorer.exe shuts down about every minute or so and restarts. There's no error message or anything, just everything on my desktop disappears then re-appears. This only started happening today. It was working fine last night before I got hit with the spyware this morning. What could possibly be causing this and how do I fix it. My computer is basically useless in this condition

Since recently, whenever I insert a DVD/CD intomy DVD drive & try to browse it (via OPEN or EXPLORE) the DVD does open & I can see the icons/folders + other details, but within seconds, I get a box saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem...etc" & explorer shuts down & restarts. This happens only when I access my DVD drive. I'll be grateful for a solution., Here's the details from the Event Viewer , the last time it occurred (an hour ago).

Got a machine on the bench right now (Dell Dimension 3100, XPHE SP2) which shuts down Windows Explorer whenever I try and do a search. I just updated this machine to SP2 and have run SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) and CCleaner on it. There must be a conflict somewhere and I have no idea what files may be conflicting.

Is there a way to make files and folders mingle together when using details view in Windows XP? The way it works now, the folders are always grouped separately from the normal files. I typically sort by filename and I'd like the folders to be mixed in with the files, sorted by name just as if they were regular files themselves.I know this isn't an error condition, but it is an annoyance. Please post a reply if you know a fix or workaround for this.

When I try to copy files to a DVD+RW it puts them into some kind of temporary files and then tells me it's ready to copy them to the CD. But it won't let me copy them to a DVD, seems to be looking for a CD. Why must I wait for these temporary files to be created. I was once able to start the copying and it would copy them with no delay. Is there some way to bypass this creation of temporary files and just begin the copying immediately?

I always liked how in WinXP, in Windows Explorer it shows zip files in the left window, as if they were sub files, allowing their contents to be viewed in the right window with a single click. However, mine has suddenly stopped doing that, zip files now only show up on the right of the screen. Anyone know why this would happen, and a quick fix?

Been having some rather strange issues with right-clicking. If I right click any executable file, my explorer.exe is killed (statusbar goes away, then appears again as explorer is reloaded) and started up again. I've been trying to figure out what could be causing it, but it's so hard to even search for a solution.

I had read a previous post about media files causing explorer to crash. It recommended disabling thumbnails previews, which did work for opening the folder. That is fixed, but now I am getting errors when I try to open certain media files i those folders, I can open one .avi but will not be able to open another. Same with .mpg, I will be able to open 10, but one consistantly will cause Explorer.exe to crash. I had K-lite codecs installed, I tried uninstalling them to see if that was causing problems. I have no idea what is going on.

I need someone to please explain to me how to fix this problem because I just have absolutely no clue how to even start. So whenever I open a video file a small window pops up titled Windows Explorer stating that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the Inconvenience." When I close that the window from which I opened the video file closes. However the video file stays open and I can watch it just fine. But other times it will also close the video file too.

First i get an error like this:I would of took a screenshot but when trying to paste the print screen it just says Error copying to clipboard. Asif it should read something there but it doesnt. Even the "OK" Button doesnt say anything but i just press it anyway. All text dissapears from my icons and all buttons and tabs and stuff. I also cannot start any program.. Starting task manager gives taskmgr.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d). Click on OK to terminate the application.

This I know is a simple question but I have forgotten how to get the information. You know when you are in Windows Explorer and click on one of your folders, you can see (at a glance) at the bottom how many files are contained therein? I have reloaded Windows and now cannot see this info anymore. I have looked in Tools, Folder Options, etc but it hasn't helped me. Please can anyone tell me how to get this info back?

Recently my computer has been opening certain files that are double-clicked very very slowly--2 - 3 minutes, thats right minutes! If I open the file by launching the application then open the file via the Open menu item, all works as expected.I did some investigation and found that this happened to certain file types that were double-clicked from the desktop or from email attachments. This behavior happens from Excel, Word, Project, Access or Internet Explorer shortcuts that are in emails. PowerPoint, Infopath, Publisher and Visio all open normally (2-3 seconds).
Digging further showed that each of the file types that takes minutes to open all have something in the DDE Message field of the Entering Action for Type (File Explorer window, Tools, Folder Options, Select "Doc" file type, Select Advanced, Highlight Open, Select Edit). The file types that open normally don't have anything in this field. This is why I think the behavior is related to DDE.I have tried the "Detect and Repair" option of Office for my troubled apps but this does not have any effect on the problem. I have also tried using msconfig to do a Diagnostic Startup and it have no effect on the problem.

Windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file this is displayed in the Properties window. Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage.

Alright, so, I have tried searching All Engines, IE every search engine and some. And I have not been able to find one web site, including Microsoft that has backup files for Windows Explorer and the Shell files. Is there a XP SP3 user that can archive the Explorer and Shell files for me? It would be much appreciated, as I have some bugs that are very annoying.

While in Windows Explorer, if I happen to look in a folder that just contains an AVI file from my Canon S2 IS digital camera (don't even open the AVI file), DrWatson gives me a warning (can't remember the details) and then Windows Explorer hangs and have to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to terminate W.E. and error report goes out to Microsoft. (no response of course) Happens every time. This does not happen on my notebook computer so there has to be a problem (conflict?) on this desktop.

All the .html files on mywindows XP sp2 machine have been renamed to .htm and further when I try to rename them, the explorer CPU usage suddenly increases to maximum. But, some files gets renamed and others can't be renamed at all. And, for those which cannot be renamed, I get a pop-up error message saying "file is being used by another program and cannot be renamed.", and that's when explorer starts using all of CPU and system gets very slow.I have already done full system scan through Kaspersky and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, but they have simple turned out to be futile.

My operating system is Window 2000.Last Friday my laptop was infected with UnSpyPC, a Quicklink toolbar and 6 large icons. Thanks to HiJackThis and Spyware removal programs etc I think I have gotten rid of the problematic crap. However now I seem to have ended up with a few corrupt Folders/Files.Whenever I try to run a Norton Antivirus scan or any number of Spyware removal programs such as Spybot, Spysweeper, Ewido, Ad-Aware etc they all get stuck or crash on one particular general data Folder. Explorer.exe also crashes and generally freezes the whole system when trying to access or search this folder

Essentially the symptoms are this:1.Opening files through Windows Explorer results in a 20 to 30 second pause before the files open. This happens on local and network drives.2.Executable files or applications open immediately. Also files open immediately from inside the application e.g. from Excel open dialog box.3. In explorer, right-clicking on files results in a 20-30 second delay in bringing up the menu, while with executables the menu comes up immediately.
