XP PRO suddenly has a noticeable decrease in speed when opening programs. Takes usually 3 minutes to open any program speed is TREMENDOUSLY dimished from last startup. Tried rebooting, ran a program called CLEANER, it deleted temp explorer files,other garbage. But still ridiculously slow opening programs, etc. I have NORTON upto date, also spybot, and adaware all show nothing.
View 14 RepliesI have run ad adware and spybot search and destroy.When I run adware it allows me to delete all problems except one.When I find this file in the windows explorer it will not allow me to delete this file.It says it is being used by someone else.When I reboot it changes names and spreads all over again.

Went to start, clicked on run, typed in %temp% and up came 2,049 temp files! Well, duh no wonder it's slow. I was explaining to her what 'temp files' are. But she doesn't even you the internet.The first page of her temp file was as follows:DF1CF4and when I tried to delete them it said : cannot delete ~~ DF1CF4: It is being used by another person or program.As I scrolled through the next few pages they seemed to be all alike, maybe a variance of the last two numbers.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that when deleting TIF's via Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files, that it takes far longer with my XP installation than with my old ME install. I see that the space allowed by default is 1192 MB. Is this the optimum size or should that be smaller to avoid accumulating so many files? I really don't recall what the setting was in ME days, but 400 MB seems to stick in my head.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently my computer has been opening certain files that are double-clicked very very slowly--2 - 3 minutes, thats right minutes! If I open the file by launching the application then open the file via the Open menu item, all works as expected.I did some investigation and found that this happened to certain file types that were double-clicked from the desktop or from email attachments. This behavior happens from Excel, Word, Project, Access or Internet Explorer shortcuts that are in emails. PowerPoint, Infopath, Publisher and Visio all open normally (2-3 seconds).
Digging further showed that each of the file types that takes minutes to open all have something in the DDE Message field of the Entering Action for Type (File Explorer window, Tools, Folder Options, Select "Doc" file type, Select Advanced, Highlight Open, Select Edit). The file types that open normally don't have anything in this field. This is why I think the behavior is related to DDE.I have tried the "Detect and Repair" option of Office for my troubled apps but this does not have any effect on the problem. I have also tried using msconfig to do a Diagnostic Startup and it have no effect on the problem.
When I try to delete the following four .tmp files, they simply reappear, causing problems with my ability to defrag. Files are dump429.tmp, dump4714.tmp, dump5b1b.tmp, dump8650.tmp. I'm also getting a stop error, and having trouble booting my system, it will only boot intermittenly, many times it simply keeps restarting and performing a disk check.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy windows explorer runs really really slow when you simply click on files that are about the size of an mp3 or larger. This is especially noticable with my secondary drive (F: drive) and the mp3 player that I connect via USB that acts as an external drive (G when plugged to the computer. My computer does run a lot in the background, most of it being junk for the stupid satellite internet system (yes, laugh. I hate it), but it still seems odd that, especially with movies, I can't even get them to open at all; it just freezes, but if I do start>run and put in the file name, it goes fine. I've got Windows 2000 with 256 MB RAM.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did a systeme restore, after it finished and restarted it came back to my explorer (desktop) and nothing loaded. I ctrl+alt+deleted and some things where running in the background.I "hard" restarted my computer and it still took me back to the blank explorer (desktop).I ran a new task and opened up firefox, when it poped up my desktop poped up and everthing in the task manager loaded but was very slow and nothing worked and it just froze. I then tried a different restore point and the same problem countinued.I then put in the windows repair disk and tried to fix the boot and still nothing. If I turn on the computer and put it into safe mode the desk top will load. But in normal mode it wont for a very long time and when it does it doesnt work.

View 8 Replies View RelatedStarted having issues last week, very very slow loading XP , then once loaded it would freeze take forever to get going again, opening programs files etc took forever, loaded in safe mode last night backed up as much as i could, at some point the comp. shut up and tried restarting, now windows won't load at all, either in safe mode or normal start up, i know a little bit about comps not enough to know if im completely ed or not, or if there is another way i can at least back up my Hard Disk or reinstall windows on my other Hard Disk and back up the orginally Hard Disk that way.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy pc is so slow that it takes ages to play a song in wmp11. Ive used tools like ad-aware and registry mechanic, tune up utilities. But still no improvement. It used to be just fine, until I installed some pay-for-viewing add program. I have uninstalled it since then, but the slowness remains. And the processor is hogged, at the highest level, even though i killed many a startup processes.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.

The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

I even used dir /A:H to included hidden files and there are none. But I can still see them in Windows XP PRO. I have Norton 360 and it did not find any viruses. Went I try to delete them windows gives no errors. Some of the files even have the same name and extension. Is there a cache or a temp file I need to delete first?

Problem 2: The view preference "thumbnails" in my picture folder is never saved! Each time I open the folder I have to set it on again! The problem is that my pict folder is not in the System disk.
I am trying to delete a directory that crashes Windows Explorer every time I select it. I am trying to use the command prompt to delete the following directory: r:video projectsfreedom interviews I can change into these directories with the cd command, but if I try to erase or delete I get an error that the system cannot find the directory. I suspect this is due to either the spaces in the directory names, or the length of the names, but I can't figure out how to get around the issue.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop running XP pro and whenever I try to rename, move or delete a file in explorer, DRWatson(kind soul that he is), pops up to tell me that he has encountered a problem and he needs to close. He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:

There are several in each of the fore mentioned folders. I can go through and delete some files, but the issue files remain with the "cannot delete file" etc. I have googled for info but what I have found is greek to me. My OS is Windows XP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm cleaning up my father's PC and I found that there are over 20,000 BIN and SPJ files on the C drive. I don't know what they do. Most files are about 1 kb in size. but a few are about 2000 KB. I cut and paste them all into one folder on the C drive and no computer functions have been affected. They are taking up about 2 GB on the disk. I am wondering if I can safely delete them.

When I'm cleaning up my filing system, I may consider deleting some folders, but first move out of them certain files I may still want to keep. However, when I try to delete the no-longer-needed folders, XP constantly comes up with a message telling me I cannot delete the folders because it may be being used by another program and to first shut that program down. Well, it is NOT being used by another program because ALL the programs that could remotely have anything to do with that folder- minus the OS, anti-virus, etc., are OFF!
Even if I shut down EVERYTHING except for the OS, that same idiotic error message still comes up and refuses to allow me to delete the folder UNTIL I reboot the system. So,I have to write down each and every folder I plan to delete and then delete them after rebooting the system. And STILL the occasional time the error message comes up telling me it's being used by another program. I'd like to know what idiot at Microsoft came up with this glitch? Personally, If I wrote the software for this OS, I would at least mention which program was using the file I was attempting to delete and have the option for this program to be shut off. BUT Somehow the people at Microsoft manage to once again lose grasp of the obvious.So, now that I've once again given my opinion re: the inner workings of MS, is there anyone out there that has had this problem and has figured out a solution other than rebooting the system?
