Computer Is Slow And Lagging / After Malware Scans Then Trouble Started
Jun 4, 2007Running an e6600 everything good, then I ran some malware scans then trouble started. Every minute or so, my computer will lag for 2-3 seconds. Example, 1. I click on a link nothing happens for 2-3 seconds or 2. I type address into my web browser, and letters don't show up for 2-3 seconds. Anyone know what's wrong? Possibly hard drive going to die?

Apr 14, 2010I was there today and her pc is soooooo slow! She knows nothing about pc's besides email and IM.First thing I was going to do was to delete all her temp files. Went to start, clicked on run, typed in %temp% and up came 2,049 temp files! Well, duh no wonder it's slow. I was explaining to her what 'temp files' are. But she doesn't even you the internet.The first page of her temp file was as follows:DF1CF4and when I tried to delete them it said : cannot delete ~~ DF1CF4: It is being used by another person or program.As I scrolled through the next few pages they seemed to be all alike, maybe a variance of the last two numbers.

Jun 26, 2005I've noticed that when deleting TIF's via Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files, that it takes far longer with my XP installation than with my old ME install. I see that the space allowed by default is 1192 MB. Is this the optimum size or should that be smaller to avoid accumulating so many files? I really don't recall what the setting was in ME days, but 400 MB seems to stick in my head.

Feb 9, 2005XP PRO suddenly has a noticeable decrease in speed when opening programs. Takes usually 3 minutes to open any program speed is TREMENDOUSLY dimished from last startup. Tried rebooting, ran a program called CLEANER, it deleted temp explorer files,other garbage. But still ridiculously slow opening programs, etc. I have NORTON upto date, also spybot, and adaware all show nothing.

Aug 4, 2004Since I wanted to clean up my e-mail system I decide to compact and save the folders as per the directions in OE's Help.I have now saved all messages and backed them up on cd.The idea was to completely delete all the OE .dbx files on my computer and keep them on disc.Trouble is, I can't read any of the compacted .dbx files now on hard disc or on the CD. When I try I am asked to Open With but I do not know which programme to use, either on the computer or on the web.Don't mind downloading something but one demo programme was no use anyway for what I need.

Aug 7, 2006I used WipeDrive to delete everything from my harddrive last night. My computer was so slow and I had restored it about a month ago but it never got rid of all the files so then it is worse than ever. Anyways, when I used the wipedrive and then reinstalled Windows XP instead of putting Windows XP into my C drive it put it into I drive. Why would it have done that and how can I get it back to the C drive?
I have a Dell computer using Windows XP Media Edition. Any other information you need please just ask and I will try to get it for you as best I can.
Computer Has Trouble Starting Up
Oct 9, 2006I started up my computer today (Dell, running Windows XP) and it was taking a long time for windows to load. Then I just got a message that said: "An error occured while initializing Active Shield. Your system might be running out of resources or disk space. Please close other applications and try restarting Active Shield". Right now I have no toolbar for windows, and no start menu, it's just empty down there. I just have my desktop icons that I can click on, but I can't move them around on my desktop. I tried to remove the McAffee Active Shield I can't because when I click on "remove" nothing happens and the computer just freezes for a moment. I have plenty of space on my computer so I know that's not a problem.
Some backround info: whenever I used to start my computer before, I would always get an update offer from McAffee which would slow windows down (I couldn't get anything to load if I double clicked on an icon) until I hit cancel. It seemed to just slow things down until I closed the McAffee offer.
Computer Has Trouble Starting
Mar 25, 2008my computer didn't star. It's not an overheating issue because everything inside is cool. I managed to get my computer to start a few times and it would get stuck at part where windows plays a noise to symbolise the computer is being started, the sound skips andnasty sounds come from my speakers.
this gave me the idea to go ahead and turn off my speakers andunplug everything. It still all didnt work. Then I went to bed and woke up the nextmorning and tried again. It started right up! then 20 minutes later i realised I didnt have the fan next to it to cool it down so I put the fan back, as soon as i swung the fan around it froze up and wouldn't start.
I didnt have time to mess with it and went to work, came home, still nothing. So I went to school, i just got home and got the idea to move a cable going from my sound card to the front of my computer around. I did that and partially perched it on the outside of my computer so it would stay in one spot.
So I beleive the problem stems from my sound card, but i'm not sure if it's just coincidence.
it seems my keyboard is messing up too and I can't space properly or whatever.
Trouble Starting Up Computer
Apr 30, 2008Recently I have had trouble just starting up my computer after the computer was in hybernate and then sometimes it would just freeze up. When I shut down and push the computer's on button it took more than a dozen times before it would even come on. What is the cause of this and is there anything I can do to resolve this issue. I at first thought that my monitor was not working but it happened even after I installed a new one.

Jan 11, 2006This computer had win98 SE, it kept dying, the screen would go black, but the computer was still running. Had to reboot several times before it would load windows again. It seemed it would do that when the computer was running a while. I checked the processor fan and it is working. I finally decided to reformat and load XP Exeutive. It loaded fine, but when I go to do windows updates, it freezes and gave me errors # OX8024402C and OX80072EE2. Then it will just die again, Screen goes black, nothing there, but you can hear the computer box still running. I don't know what else to check.

Oct 19, 2007When I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.

The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

May 22, 2010There are many files listed in this folder. I am unable to delete them. When I go to this directory in safe mode command prompt there are no files. I even used dir /A:H to included hidden files and there are none. But I can still see them in Windows XP PRO. I have Norton 360 and it did not find any viruses. Went I try to delete them windows gives no errors. Some of the files even have the same name and extension. Is there a cache or a temp file I need to delete first?

Dec 23, 2008This is a Windows XP sp3 domain connected PC with one specific user, which all of a sudden takes 2.5mins to log in to the domain, Where it used to take just about 20 seconds. Other users on the same PC is all OK 20sec login This is not the usual where it hangs at "applying computer settings" or "personal settings" it's after those two has passed that it just hangs for a couple of minutes.
All i get is the mouse pointer (not even hourglass) and the desktop wallpaper for about 2-3 minutes. When it finally logs in everything is as quick as you would expect that spec of PC to be (1,6ghz Sempron, 1gb RAM, 40gb IDE-100 HDD)

Sep 26, 2006computer now takes half an hour to an hour to reboot. in doing so, it tells me that it does not do the startup and services. it is so slow it is unbelievable. sometimes even being so slow that the words we type take a few seconds to show up on the screen. after working for a time it will invariably hang. or it will shut itself down. in either case we have to reboot, it takes that half an hour to an hour again

Nov 18, 2009I'm cleaning up my father's PC and I found that there are over 20,000 BIN and SPJ files on the C drive. I don't know what they do. Most files are about 1 kb in size. but a few are about 2000 KB. I cut and paste them all into one folder on the C drive and no computer functions have been affected. They are taking up about 2 GB on the disk. I am wondering if I can safely delete them.

Sep 28, 2008This XP annoyance has bugged me for a long time. When I'm cleaning up my filing system, I may consider deleting some folders, but first move out of them certain files I may still want to keep. However, when I try to delete the no-longer-needed folders, XP constantly comes up with a message telling me I cannot delete the folders because it may be being used by another program and to first shut that program down. Well, it is NOT being used by another program because ALL the programs that could remotely have anything to do with that folder- minus the OS, anti-virus, etc., are OFF!
Even if I shut down EVERYTHING except for the OS, that same idiotic error message still comes up and refuses to allow me to delete the folder UNTIL I reboot the system. So,I have to write down each and every folder I plan to delete and then delete them after rebooting the system. And STILL the occasional time the error message comes up telling me it's being used by another program. I'd like to know what idiot at Microsoft came up with this glitch? Personally, If I wrote the software for this OS, I would at least mention which program was using the file I was attempting to delete and have the option for this program to be shut off. BUT Somehow the people at Microsoft manage to once again lose grasp of the obvious.So, now that I've once again given my opinion re: the inner workings of MS, is there anyone out there that has had this problem and has figured out a solution other than rebooting the system?
