When i go to delete lets say off of desktop. If i right click the thing and hit delete. It starts to delete but it realy does not start then like 5 or so mins later ill get the pop-up "do you want to delete this file" then i click ok and it will start to delete then. Then when i am trying to delete it is realy slow intill the pop-up come with the message.

I have a Gateway, Windows XP laptop that's about 1 year old. A little over a week ago, it started "running slow". It's slow to start up (takes about 5-10 min), the mouse "sticks" sometimes although that is an intermittent problem, when I have multiple applications minimized (outlook express, firefox, My Documents, AIM), it's slow to toggle between them, and it's slow to open folders in My Documents.
I have ran all spyware-adware programs, defragged, tried everything I know.

I see that the space allowed by default is 1192 MB. Is this the optimum size or should that be smaller to avoid accumulating so many files? I really don't recall what the setting was in ME days, but 400 MB seems to stick in my head.

Tried rebooting, ran a program called CLEANER, it deleted temp explorer files,other garbage. View 4 Replies View RelatedI didn't find an existing thread to the topic, so i apologize if the question has already been answered. at one point in time i had a mahjongg game installed on my windows xp run pc. i placed a shortcut on the start menu (above the frequent programs list). somehow or other, the shortcut was not removed when i uninstalled the program. my attempts to get rid of it since then are as follows:
1. when i right click on the icon, and select "remove from this list", nothing happens.
2. i attempt to run the shortcut and it says "the item you selected is not available. it might have been moved, renamed, or removed. do you want to remove it from the list?" i select yes, and nothing happens.
3. i attempt to rename the shortcut and it says "cannot rename file: cannot read from the source file or disk."
4. i open the properties and there is a message in the target type field saying "this is not a valid shortcut". i cannot change any of the fields without getting the error message in #3.
5. reinstalling the game doesn't change anything. i get the same error messages as above.
6. i searched through the registry for anything named "mahjongg", and it doesn't turn anything up.
I have a basic problem with many programs running at start up, how do I stop the ones I don't want to run automatically?

Netzero is constantly downloading ads that show up when I go to log on. Now the ads are using audio which is even more annoying. Anyway, I found out where the files are kept and I know the names. I'd like to write a file that auto exe's when I turn on or off the computer. It would also be nice to have a function key that would operate the auto delete. Any ideas on how to make this work?

If you load a program in the start menu? startup folder? upon re-boot it will not start the selected program. My question is how do I delete the? startup?folder in my start menu? Performance picks up, but not what it used to be.Could someone advise me if a problem lies in this area and what to add/remove. View 7 Replies View Relatedwhen i run a virus scan using blueyonders pcguard this failed about 3/4 of the way through.The next day when starting up my computer it took about 20 minutes to boot.As i didnt have much to lose i completely formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows xp. I have not installed pcguard again after a few problems with this so i have chosen avg anti virus and zone alarm.Even after a clean install my problem is still there. I have opended the computer and cleaned any dust and checked that the fans are working and still have long start up problems.I have also run chkdisk and this showed nothing but took about 2 hours.One thing i have noticed is that when windows does start the theme tune is very distorted and crackly.I have now updated to windows service pack 2 still same problems. Im not sure what else i can add as this is my first post at this sort of thing.
