I seem to have run out of room on a Windows XP Pro system. I tried to defrag but don't have but 7% room available. I looked in Windows Explorer to try to find some huge files that might be corrupt and I see a few that are listed in blue.I have not compressed anything on purpose.

Try going to add/remove windows components and unclicking internet explorer then click next then go back and reclick internet explorer and click next again. If it is listed in add/remove than just click the hange/repair button
View 14 Replies View RelatedI understand that if I remove a USB drive without going through the process of using the "Safely Remove" icon I run the risk of getting a 'phantom' drive listed in Explorer. I have found this out the hard way! I have several partitions on the main drive and also other external hard drives - in getting these 'phantom' drives the drive letters somehow got reassigned without my intervention so now cause a problem accessing from my network. All my efforts to remove the entries have failed - I have tried through Device Manager but cannot figure out which entry would apply to the ones I have. I have one from a U3 drive which uses 2 drive letters and another single one. If I click on the "Safely Remove" icon I can get them to disappear until I reboot. I tried using those 'phantom' letters for other drives - again all goes well until I reboot and I am back to square one. I have searched the registry for the entries that set the drives but cannot figure that out either. Various trial deletions have no effect.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy primary hard drive crashed and my back up that holds all my pictures, mp3's and other important items is still ok. I reinstalled windows fine on a new hard drive with no problem. My back up hard drive is not showing in my explorer list though. Does anybody know how I may access it? I've installed all motherboard software and it still is not there. I don't wanna reformat that drive unless its the only thing i can do.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been having a problem with getting BSOD's for a long time now (assuming you don't know, bsod = blue screen of death). For the first couple months I was ok with my computer randomly crashing like this but I started to get tired of so I wrote down the errors I was getting, which were basically all STOP and irql_driver errors, so I figured I would update my drivers and things would start working better. I did that 5 days ago, and now the messages have just changed.
Before, when I used to get them there was either no files listed or three. They were win32k.sys, ha10kx2k.sys and ntfs.sys. The last two traced to either my graphics drivers or my sound drivers so I updated both of those. Now I'm starting to get totally new files, being Klif.sys and bcmwl5.sys. I haven't looked these up yet but will soon. Now, these errors occur at ANYTIME, and I'm not kidding you. Sometimes I come back to my computer after it's been idle for hours and there's a blue screen sitting there (I turned the timed restart off so I could write down the errors). Now, after reading around the internet the only thing I can come to is that my RAM is messed up, but I haven't done a memory check yet (probably should).
Also, if there is any sort of sound playing when I get the BSOD, the sound skips like a record skip and then after 5 seconds starts making the most annoying, high pitched, scratching, static, fuzz noise you could ever hear. Now I've had my computer for 3 years now and these errors started occuring regularly about 8-9 months ago. When I used to get BSOD's infrequently before this period, the sound problem described above still happened, which has led me to believe that my sound card is bad.
I really like this font in Vista and was wondering how I could install it into XP? I was going to do it by installing the powerpoint reader 2007, but it looks like it doesn't contain the font.

Looks like it is one or two pixels to big, og maybe in bold?This error shows up in some softwares, like in buttons and some texts.Its also there when a software crash, in the window that pops up asking if I want to send the error or Microsoft.

View 14 Replies View RelatedFor one of the users on that machine a vertical blue bar appears (there appears to be a red line in the middle of the bar) when the Internet Explorer starts, and the program does not respond to any commands. The bar is only about 1/8" thick and about 2" long. The bar can be relocated by pointing the mouse at the top end but after closing ie and restarting it returns to the middle of the page. The Yahoo page that loads appears to be current, i.e., it shows today's date and current stories. The only thing that actually responds is to end the program using task manager. This problem occurs for only one of the users on that computer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSystem has been shutting down and restarting up on its own, it has done this three times, i looked back at anything new i have done recently and all the i can think of was i deleted Open Office, i received a error message saying if i delete it some programs may not operate correctly. Also i tried to delete Windows messenger Live in the the control panel under add remove windows components i deleted internet explorer by mistake and had to reinstall it. The last time it didn't shut down but i got a blue screen that said Windows has detected a software or hardware problem and has shut down to prevent damage,check any new hardware or software that have been recently installed, the error massage was " IRQL_NOT LESS_OR_ EQUAL. I have recently been getting the infamous BSOD and lots of Error Reporting Messages. Most commonly, the error reporting is with Internet Explorer or Firefox, and tonight my BSOD was during a full system scan using F-Secure.
I used to get BSODs all the time, but a co-worker took it home for a weekend and replaced some RAM (I think?) and got things running again. This only solved the problem for a few months and things have gotten progressively worse.
My computer is infected. I have ccCleaner, Spybot, Ad-Watch, Ad Aware, Windows live onecare. I have ran them all but I am still having problems. When I log onto Internet Explorer I get a blue screen that tells me I need to reset my security settings in order to view my home page which is road runner. I followed the instructions and nothing. I cannot view any flash sites. I tried to see if I am missing a flash player and I cannot locate one. When I try to download Adobe Flash Player, I am unable to do so as the download button does not appear on my screen ( I know where the button is supposed to be because I checked out the site on my daughters computer,which I am on now). I also tried to download other software to help with the spyware and malware, however the minute I hit download I either instantly get disconnected from the internet or I get an error message that says " Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down...". I have gone into safe mode and ran spybot and the others and still no better. I am getting a message that Windows Firewall is disabled, however when I got to it Its grey and it wont let me turn it on. I have been trying to fix my computer for days and am completely fustrated,

I followed the directions when I started and I thought I had deleted everything listed. Can I solve this without Zeroing out the HDD and starting over?

Viewpoint is not listed as a program. Can someone put me onto a reference that will give me a good explanation of this so I know what I have? So far I've learned that it's an intrusive piece of software put on my computer by something I've downloaded.
View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently I had to replace my primary (master) HD, my 2nd (slave) worked fine and has data on it. I reinstalled windows XP home and the master HD seems ok but my slave doesn't appear under "my computer". If I use "device manager" it is listed, and says it is working properly: however, the "device usage" area at the bottom of the window is grey and has nothing in it. When I look at my master, the "device usage" area gives me a choice: [1] use this device (enabled), [2] do not use this device (disabled). I have tried everything I can think of, I might even try reformatting the drive if I could sellect it.

Before all of this I was stuck trying to boot up and it would not even let me into safe mode.

Thinking back I had noticed in downloading programs,there was no entry option for c/program files either?My P.C seems to be running fine,other than my OE often hangs on checking mail,and needs a reboot to function correctly. Obviously I didn't know what I was doing, but I did get the system installed and put programs back on that I had disks for. The problem is that I now have Norton, Nero and others on the hard drive that do not show up on the computer but when I do a scan I have to check through all those programs and they are taking up space on the drive. I cannot access any of them.

ok i was wondering if a servie listed in the windows xp system configuration is stopped is it ok to uncheck it. an example being ati hotkey poller this service is listed as stopped on system configuration, and on services.msc it is listed as a startup item. so surely if its stopped is it ok to uncheck it on system config as well as disable it on services.msc?

Wordpad scrambles anything thats pasted into it. Control panel/add remove programs/Windows components doesn'twork. As Notepad is not listed in the accessories folder, even though it appears that way in program files/accessories. So, how can I fix this?

My problem is, however, the entry in Add/Remove remains but only with the name "My Way Search Assistant" and when I click on it all that shows is "Used Rarely"It has no size and no longer has any option to change or remove.I have looked for registry entries there are none is there a program listed.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI frequently get a blue screen when using my computer, often when playing a high memory game (specifically WoW) and running other programs such as ventrilo. Occasionally, it says kernal memory dump...etc. But usually its just a blank blue screen. When I load windows, pressing delete does not enter me into setup mode, and my windows CD will not load up on restart either. I tried to uninstall my hard drive driver, and it worked, and it seems to have reloaded on restart I thought it might be corrupt but now whenever I go into device manager, it asks me if I want to restart to enable these changes, even though I havent changed everything.
