Media Files Cause Explorer.exe To Crash
May 24, 2008
I had read a previous post about media files causing explorer to crash. It recommended disabling thumbnails previews, which did work for opening the folder. That is fixed, but now I am getting errors when I try to open certain media files i those folders, I can open one .avi but will not be able to open another. Same with .mpg, I will be able to open 10, but one consistantly will cause Explorer.exe to crash. I had K-lite codecs installed, I tried uninstalling them to see if that was causing problems. I have no idea what is going on.

Whenever i try to play some of my video files (.avi, .mpg. wmv. etc) my shell and media player will both crash. For shells i have tried both bblean and standard explorer, media players i have tried are windows media player, winamp, and bsplayer. It dosent actually crash the program, it just brings up the little "this program needs to close" thing. if i drag it to the side the video will continue to play (somtimes). somtimes the videos wont load at all.

Having recently had someone else using my computer for a while, installing various software (like winamp and SubEdit player) it seems windows media player (that's what I use) no longer recognises the usual files as media files like .mp3 .wmv .m3u .avi etc etc so when I click open file and select "media files (all types)" in the file type box it shows nothing, so I have to change it to all files which is irritating. Media player still plays everything fine but this is pretty annoying.

I spent almost the whole day trying to fix it. I have knowledge of computers here and there but not enough to fix this problem. The problem starts out with me going to my computers and then opening the CD drive. I put in my music CD and then explored the CD folder, but as soon as i open it, it gives me an error. It pops up the explorer.exe has an ecountered a problem, send do not send report, etc

I'm running XP Home. When in Windows Explorer if I right click on a file/folder I get an hourglass for about 25 seconds and then it dumps me out of WE. After I'm dumped out everything else still seems to work fine and I can reopen WE, but still no right clicking in it.
The right click feature seems to work in all other applications.

I need help with a very annoying problem. For several months now I have been experiencing totally random explorer.exe crashes. They can happen maybe every couple of days or sometimes it can go several weeks before a crash. The crashes can occur when using Windows Media Player or while browsing the Internet or sometimes doing absolutely nothing at all Like I said it is random, not only in what I'm doing but also when it happens. The error message is very vague and when I look in Event Viewer, all it says is Event ID 1000, Faulting application explorer exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x04aa2128 (the fault address is never the same though.)

If I keep any folder open for longer than like 7 seconds, explorer.exe encounters a problem and needs to close, I can usually just drag the error to the corner and keep looking at the folder for about 20 more seconds before it crashes completely, sometimes explorer shuts off with no warning while viewing a folder. I have tried the remove defective right click menu buttons thing and scanning for viruses, but it still does it, tell me if you want more info.

my toshiba laptop was working fine. then a few days ago one of my games gave me a regular error during the start "game.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." when i clicked 'click here' it displayed some info including "modname:msvcr71.dll". i thought maybe that game had somehow gone corrupt and i reinstalled it. the error did not go away and i was unable to play my game. then suddenly explorer.exe started giving me the same message with the same msvcr71.dll listed as modname. in both cases, the error message says that the following file will be included in the report and then some appcompat.txt in some temp folder. this file was unique everytime but the phrase appcompat.txt was constant. also when i tried to find this file in the specified location i found that it did not exist. i cannot understand what triggers the error, it occurs totally randomly, but i have to be dragging a file icon.
when the error message is displayed, the system does not stop and i can choose to ignore the message for as long as i want, everything is fine. when i click close the explorer restarts.also, recently i got similar errors from vlc player when i tried to play a wmv file in slow motion. this error message also lists msvcr71.dll as mod name.then another game started giving me the same problem with the same modname msvcr71.dll.i cant make any sense of all this.

I have a Compaq-based computer running WinXP SP2 on it and for a little while I've had explorer.exe crash on me from time to time just out of the blue. Well a new problem has risen and it started today and its a nasty one. I was testing out a file-sharing program, but it said I needed the latest Java update to run it, so I went to the Sun Java website and downloaded their J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 06 (that's what was on the site) and got that all set up and started checking out the program I had downloaded earlier (Limewire Basic) from Filehippo.com and as soon as I clicked on a file from the list of files that came up in my search, the program would instantly close out without notification. I didnt see it as a big deal. I got a hold of the file I was downloading, but every time I went to or near the folder in my personal folder's directory, explorer.exe decided to crash on me. So I thought I might have caught a virus, so I looked to see if it was on some programs I've used in the past for finding trojans and whatnot and it came up clean. So I uninstalled and deleted LimeWire and thought maybe the Java had something to do with it. Turns out I was wrong again. So right now this machine has no Java on it. So I went into safe mode and still could not get to the folder with the file in it. Explorer.exe AND the Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger app both crashed on me (got that normal error in which you can send out an error report to Microsoft) and it did this several times.
So then I booted the computer back into the normal mode and attempted to get to the file through the cmd.exe (DOS) program and I eventually figured out (with the help of someone on my buddylist) how to get to the specific directory that the folder was in and I tried to delete it, but everytime I typed "Y" to the prompt, cmd.exe would crash as well. Now it sais that there are 0 files in the folder (has 3 subfolders in it) that I was trying to delete and 5 folders (including the "." & ".." on the DOS prompt. So I've been screwing around with this for about 4 1/2 hours now and I've had no luck getting to that specific folder. If I try to get to it through my folder, explorer.exe crashes. I can get right to the directory that the folder is in and then it will just crash. Everything else seems to run just fine. I havent tried checking the disk check thing, but what does one reccomend I do? I've already reformatted this computer once before (last year) and I dont want to have to do it again (because I dont have the money or the WinXP disk to get it reformatted again).

Recently, two weeks or so ago, every time I access My Video folder in My Documents (I am the administrator) I get the message that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and has to shut down. Then the message to send details to Microsoft. After a few trials I have found that programs such as Photoshop or Picasa for two examples close as soon as I access said folder with them.

I think these two are related, but I cant seem to find anything that would explain why either is occuring. When trying to load Photoshop, Dreamweaver MX, or any other heavy duty program (3D Studio Max etc), I get the error "Explorer has caused and error and needs to close". Also, when trying to run some problems I get an error stating that I am running a 16-bit MSDOS sub-system and references the files command.com and autoexec.nt. Last I checked the MSDOS subsystem quit with Win2K. I've run ad-aware, spybot, and AVG antivirus trying to find something that way that may have effected the system, but I didnt find anything.

I have a 1tb My Book Premium II drive. I'm accessing the drive through Windows XP Media Edition 2004. The External HD is connected via USB (I don't have Firewire or Firewire 2.0 on my laptop.) I have had little to no issues with this external hd, and have previously used the 160 gig version for over 2 years. I've got 550gb free meaning I've used it quite a bit. The 1tb drive is around 6 months old so far and I've got two complaints vs no solution. My files are sorted in the external hd similar to Window's. I have a Main folder, several categories of folders, then more folders within each... I archive lots of music, some videos, personal documents, and tons of pictures.I have been downloading various files directly to my hd, keeping my 160 gb laptop's hd clear of various files (Is this a bad idea??)
I use SoulSeek and Azeurus - both of which are compatible with Windows and tweaked appropriately. I attempt to access the files from My Computer and frequently experience an Explorer Crash. The severity is varying generally the Dr.Watson debugger will crash along with explorer... and on other occasions, I get no warning pop-up at all. I'm at a complete loss as to why this occurs. I can access the files with the download program(s) running, as well as closed both resulting with a crash. I have attempted to view the files through Mozilla and IE, both work properly, but it's an inconvenience.Anyone have similar problems? I have not found this exact issue on other forums... but I'm getting the picture WD drives do have problems.

When saving a jpg image in Firefox, Firefox crashes and closes without warning. When viewing a folder full of pictures in Windows Explorer, Explorer crashes and closes in about 10 seconds (it varies). This is even when viewing the files without thumbnails (Detailed list view). I have removed Thumbs.db from this folder. I have run chkdsk /F on all partitions in my computer. This folder that is causing the Explorer crash is on a FAT32 partition. chkdsk found no errors on the FAT32 partition, but fixed something in the NTFS partition.
Even though only one folder seems to be causing Explorer to crash, it seems that no matter where I save images in Firefox, Firefox still crashes. I scanned for viruses a bit. I ran Free AVG on the entire computer. I also ran Trend Micro Housecall from the browser. No threats were found. I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and all the latest updates on a Gateway MT3419 laptop.

I have searched this forum (and many others) for the answer to my problem but can't find one, just similar problems. I recently installed Service Pack 2 using a windows install cd (rather than just an upgrade patch). And now everytime i run windows i cannot open any folder or explorer window with out "explorer.exe" crashing. I have turned off DrWatson and now i just get a memory error everytime. I can not downgrade because i used a Windows Install CD (can't find an option anywhere to remove service pack 2 now). Please could someone help me because it is highly annoying.

desktop computer crashed (motherboard) and I purchased her a new laptop. I am trying to copy her files from her "My Documents" directory - I have converted the old HD into an external drive - but it is telling me that there is nothing there. She was an Administrator on the old PC and she is an Administrator on the new laptop. What am I doing wrong? What have I not done? I don't want to lose two years of info. Even the backups will not work.

I had to re-setup WIN XP after a system crash and had valuable photos and music that I had been permanently wiped. However, I just installed a new Norton AV program and, while running a complete scan, saw those specific file names being scanned,
The path specified was c:ownermy documents and settings
Access to this folder is denied, even though I have no password protection on any user account, and this IS the only account set up.

I can not launch 90% of my apps, word, excel, adaware, when I click on the program it launches, and I get the .exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Then it shuts down that program. I can not add any new favorites to my internet explorer, does the same thing. I can not download a file and save it, I can download a file and run it though, not always successfully. Pretty much the pc is becoming crippled I have run registryfix7 (had it installed) fixed what was listed, but no helpI have done a full virus scan and spyware scan with Windows LiveOneCare, nothing shows up.

For some time now I have been unable to use the windows xp search function. It starts out all right but always crashes before it completes anything. Sometimes it actually manages to find some files before it crashes.I cannot see any pattern as to a specific location causing it to crash. Originally I thought it was doing it cuz I had WordPerfect open whenever I started the search, but recent attempts to run a search with NO programs open give me the same crashes.

I recently recovered from a nasty virus on my laptop that 'slipped through' Norton AV.I pulled the hard drive and put in a USB enclosure kit and cleaned it with updated Norton and Malwarebytes. I also used UBCD4WIN Boot CD to regain access to the system which corrupted all of the user accounts (userinit.exe)I re-installed and booted the machine in safe mode and after quite a bit of work was able to log in as administrator While there I ran a few reg. c
leanup programs and created a new user with admin rights from Control Panel. My old personal log-in profile (also with administrator rights) still doesn't work. I also can not access these user's files in docs. & sett. while logged on as administrator. I know that they are there ( a lot of docs.) because I can see them when the AV software is scanning the folder(s).Is there a way to retreive these files?

Recently I retreived a bunch of my pictures off of our church computer.I burned them to disk with some Roxio program.I brought them to home computer and put them in the appropriate file with other pictures from same event. It was my intention to make one CD with all pictures from same event on it.I selected pictures, hit properties had quite a bit of hang time.I selected all pictures for burning.I told the burner what to do using the Win XP pro directions (wizard?) and walked away. DIdn't work, had a problem.Low on memory, so I rebooted. Came back and deleted a bunch of pics that had been archived.Selected pics again, but during the time it was transferring files to the CD (before the wizard) it put up a black screen with a bunch of information that flashed too quickly to read before it rebooted.

"date modified" is still there, but i like to sort my video folders by artist, and now it does me no good.by the way, when i now click on an avi's properties, summary tab, and go to advanced, all the needed info is missing from there too.
