Alright, so, I have tried searching All Engines, IE every search engine and some. And I have not been able to find one web site, including Microsoft that has backup files for Windows Explorer and the Shell files.Is there a XP SP3 user that can archive the Explorer and Shell files for me? It would be much appreciated, as I have some bugs that are very annoying.

I have a folder of movies that I want to archive and burn to dvd to make room on my hard drive. Whats the best way to do this?? Should I make a sinlge rar archive and then burn to a bunch of dvds?? Is there a better what of doing this?

When a user is editing documents in Word 2003 from a network share, the Windows Explorer then shuts down and refreshes the desktop. The error message above is in the Application Event Log. the Event ID is 1000. Done some searches and tried a few things but still user gets this error. After this error in the Event Log another message is "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted. The Event ID is 1002 for this one.

Part of the solution noted in the forum was to restart "using last known good configuration", but this doesn't work. It simply attempts to start again and comes up with the error messages again.

The screen goes blank for a second and the task bar and start button disappear then come back.I've virus scanned with AVG (with latest updates) and done online scans. I appear to be virus free. I have used a registry checker and tidied up any errors there.
In an XP-Home, one user system, what shoul be the defautl values found in the following registry entry: HKU.DEFAULTSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders ??To make a long story short, there are entries pointing to a non existing user's folder (eg: C:Documents and SettingsTEMP....) and I want to get rid of this TEMP user and folder.This is the only section of the registry where this folder is referenced.

When I try to add 4th file to the archive, the problem occurs. The process of updating archive is shown for a second, then my computer restart.The problem also occurs when I try to install Avast Home Edition. The progress bar of installation continues but at the same percent, my computer restart. I've tried for another version of Avast, installing Malware Byte, but my computer restart too.After restarting, it shows a dialog says "Microsoft has recovered from a serious error." I simply click OK and my computer works fine, except for updating Winrar archive again or installing Avira and Malware Byte.

View 7 Replies View RelatedHi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.

I have and eMachine T3256 Windows XP Service pack 2.
On three of the user accounts when you right click on anything you receive: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
When I open a new account the same problem returns.
I'm posting this as a help guide for all those out there who have had Windows explorer.exe start doing crazy things. I'm the go to guy for tech problems amongst all of my friends and I've discovered that I'm not the only person with one of these explorer.exe bugs.Firstly I know that explorer.exe is the Windows service controls the UI and allows you to browse files, have icons on your desktop and have a taskbar. However of late bugs have been appearing that are causing it to malfunction in ways that shouldn't be possible.

but i could only access the files from 3 out of 4 users, one of the users i could access where password-protected and so was mine.. but i couldn�t access the personal files from my old user
Where are the registry files stored, like system.dat and user.dat? I thought they were in the Windows directory but I don't see them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHopefully I can explain my situation without dragging it out to long, but it is involved.The problem is with my wife computer which is an Emachine, Model T3265, running Win XP, Home Edition and IE 7.0.The last time my wife was on the computer was the evening of Aug 14, at which time she had been playing the card game Spider Solitaire. I am also listed as a user but only to keep it running for my wife.When she tried to use the computer the next day, Aug 15 she kept getting the message Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.Having come up with the same results as my wife, here is what I have been able to determine.
Be it from the Start Menu, Desk Top or Program Folder, the end result is the above .message. .It didn't matter whose account I was in, mine or my wife, or if I tried to open an executable file or program directly or with a shortcut, the results were the same. However I did find a couple of things that were quite odd. The items stored in the task bar at the bottom right side of the task bar could be opened, but only from here..These programs consisted of the Virus Program, Trend Microsoft Pecillin, messenger program and the like. I also found that if I opened Documents and Settings and then opened either my wife or my personal folder and then went to Favorites I was able to access the internet. I could not do is run Restore from system tools and when I tried use the run function in the start menu I got a pop up window which said Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want a shortcut placed on the desktop.Short of doing a full format and re-installation can you tell me what has happened and how to fix it?
I just moved in to my buddy from work, and decided to put a pass on my PC, since a lot of people go thru the house on weekends. I set up an account, gave it admin privileges, but when setup asked: "would you like to give that account access to files?" (or some similar question) I selected NO. When account loaded I couldn't get access to any of my files! The problem now is that I can't delete that new account, because it's the only account! I tried setting up another one with administrator privileges, but it doesn't ask that question anymore (would you like to give that account access to files?), so I can't get access? Do you know a solution, or a step towards getting access to files back?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently recovered from a nasty virus on my laptop that 'slipped through' Norton AV.I pulled the hard drive and put in a USB enclosure kit and cleaned it with updated Norton and Malwarebytes. I also used UBCD4WIN Boot CD to regain access to the system which corrupted all of the user accounts (userinit.exe)I re-installed and booted the machine in safe mode and after quite a bit of work was able to log in as administrator While there I ran a few reg. c
leanup programs and created a new user with admin rights from Control Panel.My old personal log-in profile (also with administrator rights) still doesn't work. I also can not access these user's files in docs. & sett. while logged on as administrator. I know that they are there ( a lot of docs.) because I can see them when the AV software is scanning the folder(s).Is there a way to retreive these files?
I built a computer for my mother a few years ago, and used Windows Pro Black edition for her OS. It's been fine, have had no problems until she somehow deleted some detrimental user account files. The only user account that was enabled at the time was the admin account, which is the one she used. The computer boots to the Windows splash, but then an alert pops up telling me that the user files for admin cannot be located and logs me into a temporary user account. The first thing I tried was copying all the folders in the admin user account folder in docs and settings, and creating a new account and pasting those folders into it. I named the account "Janet" and deleted the admin account.
This worked somewhat. I boot into the splash screen, and still get the same error message, but then I get an option to log in under a new user account. I can then enter "Janet" and it tries to load. However, it restarts, and I can only load the user account in safe mode. I have tried to do a system restore, but it tells me that it was unsuccessful no matter which date I try to use. (Probably because I deleted the admin account, like an idiot, before I tried to restore.) Is there a way to find out how to get the computer to stop trying to load "Admin" as the default user account and to load "Janet" instead? I can't find a setting for that anywhere. If it was regular XP Pro, I know I could try using the recovery console on the disk, but this is Black Edition, and although I have the CD still, I don't want to wipe the OS off the HD if there is no recovery console for Black. Would a regular XP CD work to repair this?
I had my hard drive transferred to a new pc. I cannot access the numerous (and important!) files under Documents and Settings/My Username on the new pc. Apparently, Windows has restricted access to those files since it does not recognize me on the new PC. The files all seem to be there (based on the info from the properties of the documents and settings folder), but I cannot see them. Both old and new pc use XP Home.How can I regain access to these files?

My question is can I just go and delete the files in the TEMP folder manually as well? without damaging some other program applicaiton operations?

We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a laptop from someone. Dell 6230S. It has windows XP sp2. I reloaded Windows and made myself the administrator. The person who had this before me has a group of files, lets call them JONAH (not real name) about 1/2 GB in size and I can't delete them!! Actually I've managed to delete some but not all. Jonah is about 1/2 the size it used to be. They're located in C:documents and Settings and they contain all his old files including his windows files, my documents etc. I've tried deleting from safe mode, I've tried using KillBOX (in and out of safe mode and on reboot), I've tried unchecking "READ OnLY" and I still can't do it. This is quite a bit of space so I want to reclaim it. I'm using NTFS.
