it asked me to make a new folder thats wasnts c:windows. so i did and its xp. i started up computer and none of my old files are on desktop, toolbar etc. but they are there on ym computer. how can i restore these to how they were? and install all my programs again?
View 1 RepliesI turned on my laptop, and many files were missing from folders. In particular, I had two folders on my desktop, with many subfolders in each. Each subfolder had multiple files in them. When I went to access one, ALL of the SUBFOLDERS and ALL of the FILES were gone. I tried a system restore, and it brought back the subfolders, but not the files. I then tried TuneUp, CleanUP, HijackThis, Ewido, Micrsoft Antispyware, Lavasoft, and many other programs to bring back the files, but nothing can find them. I also have a updated McAfee constantly running, and there was never a virus.

Tried installing Windows Defender, and it couldn't find her "My Pictures" folder so it didn't install. So I looked under her My Documents folder. It's missing the My Pictures and My Music folders. Plus, the other folders that are there, such as My Videos, etc., their icons are not special, they look like ordinary folders.Her computer's "Shared Documents" section looks fine, with all the usual folders with special icons, etc.

I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.

Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
I have windows defender and there is defender icon with a question mark on it in the systray It is telling me definitions are not updated for 50days.When i click update it does so and tells me it is now up to date but the icon is still there and defender says it has not been updated..I uninstalled and reinstalled defender but it is still the same.
I'm using WinXP Home. I don't turn off my machines but hibernate them instead. There's one machine that won't hibernate. I get the message "The device driver for the 'PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver". I updated the driver. Still can't hibernate.

View 13 Replies View RelatedAfter I updated to sp2 and other updates via auto update and went to WMP 10, I noticed that the new DVD+RW's I bought the other day are not excepting a format or allowing me to erase them. Out of the box they are initially recognized by XP Pro, then when formating with nero they lock up during finalizing and I have to reboot. At this point the disk, after reboot is not recognized and seems to be in an endless loop or check mode state. I have, I think , 6 damaged so far. I am afraid to experiment and thought RW disks could be at least erased and reused but XP can't see the RW media and this does not let me use any other app to erase or reformat. Any ideas or registry fixes out there?

It is staying on top of all open files and is waiting for me to approve the update.It reads this way: (Blue column to the left with an eye-shaped logo and the word Viewpoint. The white section to the right says: You have been Updated. Your Viewpoint Media Player was recently updated with the latest components to enhance your web viewing. A new browser update is recommended, including advanced pop-up blocking and graphically enhanced search. Using Windows XP and just updated to Internet Explorer 7. All of my desktop shortcuts get hung up since the IE update. I have access to the internet and am able to go to any website though.

2. The window shows, (were I can chose a folder) and reads "Select the directory where you VST plugins are located"

4. Bottom says "Folder" you type the folder name there

I updated my bios with Asus' bios update utility, at first everything worked fine. Including the required reboot. The next day when tried I booted up I got an error message saying the processor is set at the wrong speed. No matter what speed I set the message reappeared.
