Folders In Favourites Disappeared: Retrieving The Lost Folders?
Jun 30, 2005
when i opened up my favourites folder in explorer some of my folders have disappeared my daughter has been on the computer but swears she has not even opened favourites, can anyone tell me why this has happened and if it is possible to retrieve my folders.I have tried system restore but it did not help
I appear to have folders and subfolders in my Favourites list which i cannot get rid of, ive tried right hand clicking but no options are available, ive also tried organise favourites Also, i have an unwanted toolbar that pops up at the bottom of my screen with things like Travel, Casino etc which i think the Favourites may be linked in some way i have no idea how to find the source on my computer to delete it. i regularly delete my cookies.
When i'm on a web page and i click the "favourites" (yellow star button) in WinXP (on the toolbar above the web page) i see all my favourite websites, but the little yellow icon does not appear beside them, so i'm unsure whether they are direct links to the web pages or whether they are folders containing the links !! Oddly enough, when i plug in my USB HD, the little yellow folder icons re-appear What can i do to get the folders icons back (without having to keep my USB HD switched on) ?
I've had 'Show All Hidden Files and Folders' enabled for a long time now, but all of a sudden all of of my hidden files disappeared. They weren't deleted, since they are still viewable via cmd (attrib or dir/a). So I went to 'Folder Options', and saw that 'Show All...' was still enabled.I tried to 'Hide All...' and then 'Show All...' again, but then I saw that after setting it to Hide All and re-entering Folder Options, that 'Show All' was stuck on enabled. Restarting didn't solve either problems.Scanned my PC with Registry Mechanic, Ad-Aware, Spybot - S&D, and NOD32. still nothing.
I had a registry problem, in that when I booted up my laptop, it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged. I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup. So now Windows starts again and everything is good. All of my files are still in tact. However, my settings are all gone. Even though my files are on the hard drive, the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed. In Documents and Settings, the reason is revealed.
My daughter was running Win98, and had been saving to desktop folders (she thought). I know this isn't wise, didn't realise she didn't know that.Recently computer was acting strange and a "professional" was called in who copied everything on her hard drive to an external drive, cleaned it out and installed 2000. Then copied her stuff back to her drive. Now the numerous folders on her desktop have either disappeared or if opened show only gobbledegook.
I got a message from Outlook asking permission to compress my e-mail file folders. It's done this before and I've always let it with no problem.I fired up my computer yesterday and discovered that all my e-mail folders, all received and sent messages have disappeared.I thought my wife may have accidentally erased the files so I checked the Recycle Bin. There were several .bak files with the same names of the file folders.I figured hit the restore button and the files would be restored.
I recently installed a new hard drive in my laptop, installed a new clean copy of xp-sp2. No problems. Put the old HD in a case with a USB connection so that I could retreive my files/programs... but most of them were in folders on the desktop, and the X:/My Documents/User/Desktop folder is empty. (Win Explorer is set to display hidden and system folders) I've checked every location I can think of, and I can't find those folders/files.
All my folders in My Documents just display as a plain yellow folder (default folder), whereas the My Music, My Pictures folders had the personalised icons on them.
why do a lot of my XP folders and files in them folders seem to have lost their name tags? In other words it shows the foler but no name underneath it. In an MP3 folder this makes it guesswork as to which files I am picking.I have to move the cursor over the file and wait for the box to pop up for its details.
Notice considerable lag when doing the following simple tasks: use the dialog boxes to browse folders (save as, etc) is slow ,double clicking my computer or any folders is slow, right click and create new folders is slow, clicking START button and going to programs is slow
Old system had many .dbx files but zero .pst files - no export/backup had ever been done on it. Tried to copy over the .dbx files, and appeared to work, but then somehow outlook clobbered old and copied .dbx files, or rendered them invisible.
My XP system (Compaq) failed to start up completely after booting. Claimed 'Missing' DISCover.EXE file, others, locked up. Hit F10 for system recovery to makes repairs from the hidden partition. It assured me that my data would not be lost
When I turned my computer back on, I had lost all of my inbox, and many of my saved folders in outlook. I looked in the recycle bin, but it appears to be empty. Where did my stuff go?
I have ended up with DBX files on"Windows XP service pack 3"but cannot read them or change them. Is there a way to save them elsewhere on my hard drive
I have a Compaq laptop on XP that is up to date. Norton runs clean. I believe my modem is going bad because whenever Im on the internet and minimize IE the computer locks up. In about five minutes it starts running and all the things I clicked on while it was locked up appear, as if they were all running in the background. The pc works fine if Im not using the modem. Im on vacation and have other modems at home. Several times I held the power button down when it was hung up. One of those times I lost my profile so that when it starts up it cant find local settings and it has to build a temp profile. I built another profile but all of my old Outlook folders are missing. Ive done multiple searches for *.pst but cant find them, even looking in hidden files. Ive found an old pst file that I made as a backup last year but when I try to load it into my new profile/ user it says I dont have permission to access these files. The new user I built is set as administrator. I tried moving a copy from the cd to my user but then it asked for a password which I never set. Here are my questions,
1)Is there any way to find the folders in my old Outlook? 2)Is there a way to change the permission on the old pst file on my backup cd? I tried finding it in the registry after I moved it to my user but was unable to? 3)Scanpst.exe needs a pst file to work on which I cant find. 4)Ive reloaded the driver for the modem but that didnt help. Any thoughts? 5)When you archive the mail where is it kept? I did this last week.
but i got a music folder with close to 100 seperate artist folders inside....all of which contain mp3's from various artists. (About 1200 mp3 files all inside these 100 folders...all inside 1 folder if that makes any sense)I'm thinking about moving all those mp3's outside there folders so that i have just one continuous stream of mp3's. Basically i want just my mp3's inside the main folder without their individual artist folder.
XPpro with two HDs, CDr/w and DVDr/w.(D AND (E are (were?) a 20G drive which I partitioned over a year ago. This morning I came across a 4G drive in an old box. (really). Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave. Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. So... I removed the 4G and replaced the leads back to the DVD. My Computer' shows 3.5 floppy Local Disk(C FRSTHAFOLD(D 9G abt Notice NO (E
Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
My Favourites now contain hundreds of entries because it is somehow automatically adding them without me specifically doing so. I presume there is a way of stopping this. Does anybody know how?
My sole 80 G hard drive had a 15 G FAT 32 partition that is the C drive (partition). My XP Pro SP2 OS is an upgrade from 98, which is why I used FAT32. The balance of the drive is the F drive (partition) is/was formatted as NTFS so I could use it more efficiently in editing video. While using DVD Shrink 3.2 and directing the copy to a folder in F I experienced a lockup. After rebooting I no longer show F. I've tried a sys restore but my only restore point was this morning and that didn't work. When I tried to defrag the hard drive it doesn't show F as it has.
whenever i try to get into my USB or my video folder a windows error message comes up and says that it needs to exit my computer. It has become increasingly frustrating.
I'm the only person who uses my PC and having two "My Documents" folders and subfolders is confusing. So should I only use the one associated with "user" or the one that's directly off the C drive? Getting rid of one of the "My Documents" folders is either impossible or would cause big problems - right? (XP Home Edition)
I screwed up and clicked something while trying to change desktop icon. Some message opened and said I'd have to allow something to happen so without thinking I stupidly allowed it. Now almost all my folders have this annoying blue task bar running down the left side of the folders. It's a royal pain, takes up space on the page and I can't seem to find how to undo the damn thing.
I'd like to know if it's possible to use my own images as a BG for certain folders. For instance, I've made a 'Games' folder, which is where I put shortcuts to games, and would like to use my own image as the BG for that folder. Is it possible? Is there a way to do this?
i have in "MY MUSIC" folder, over 85 individual folders all of which have an album cover displaying the artist that they represent. I have noticed in various other places on my PC that certain random folders also display an album cover.why is this, i have tried to select the restore to default but it seems to not wipe the folders clean. i hope this makes sense, its kinda annoying me that this is happening.
i would like to know how i can set explorer, in xp, to permanently have the "folders" tab on. what i'm after, is that folders list that appears on the left when the "folders" tab is clicked. it makes moving files aroud simple and quick, and having to click the "folders" tab every time i open a folder annoys the hell out of me.
What's the best way to import folders (e-mail in Outlook Express) from one machine to another(not networked)? I have copied the whole Outlook Express folder onto a CD from the old machine but am having difficulty in importing sub-folders etc. to the new machine.I have a series of additional folders under Local Folders on my old system that I would like to transfer to my new system.
I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and changed the icon, clicked ok, blah blah. However, now whenever I open a folder, it instead opens the default "Search" thing.
So I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and added a new thing called "open", to open with "explorer.exe".
Now the folder opens, however when I double click a folder within that, rather than it opening in the same window, it opens in a new window!!
And no, this is not the setting in Folder Options that selects between the two. It is alerady set to open in same window. I've gone through all the other settings in Folder Options.
