Lost My Document Special Folders
Mar 2, 2006All my folders in My Documents just display as a plain yellow folder (default folder), whereas the My Music, My Pictures folders had the personalised icons on them.

Feb 11, 2007I recently installed a new hard drive in my laptop, installed a new clean copy of xp-sp2. No problems. Put the old HD in a case with a USB connection so that I could retreive my files/programs... but most of them were in folders on the desktop, and the X:/My Documents/User/Desktop folder is empty. (Win Explorer is set to display hidden and system folders) I've checked every location I can think of, and I can't find those folders/files.

Jul 12, 2007why do a lot of my XP folders and files in them folders seem to have lost their name tags? In other words it shows the foler but no name underneath it. In an MP3 folder this makes it guesswork as to which files I am picking.I have to move the cursor over the file and wait for the box to pop up for its details.

Feb 11, 2006I have a Compaq laptop on XP that is up to date. Norton runs clean. I believe my modem is going bad because whenever I�m on the internet and minimize IE the computer locks up. In about five minutes it starts running and all the things I clicked on while it was locked up appear, as if they were all running in the background. The pc works fine if I�m not using the modem. I�m on vacation and have other modems at home. Several times I held the power button down when it was hung up. One of those times I lost my profile so that when it starts up it can�t find local settings and it has to build a temp profile. I built another profile but all of my old Outlook folders are missing. I�ve done multiple searches for *.pst but can�t find them, even looking in hidden files. I�ve found an old pst file that I made as a backup last year but when I try to load it into my new profile/ user it says I don�t have permission to access these files. The new user I built is set as administrator. I tried moving a copy from the cd to my user but then it asked for a password which I never set. Here are my questions,
1)Is there any way to find the folders in my old Outlook?
2)Is there a way to change the permission on the old pst file on my backup cd? I tried finding it in the registry after I moved it to my user but was unable to?
3)Scanpst.exe needs a pst file to work on which I can�t find.
4)I�ve reloaded the driver for the modem but that didn�t help. Any thoughts?
5)When you archive the mail where is it kept? I did this last week.
We Apologize For The Inconvenience - Special Case
Oct 14, 2010I was using my computer, and it froze completely. Only thing I could do is Alt + Tab, but it wouldnt bring up anything. So I restarted it, using the button on the computer itself. After that the "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." message came up. I have the options (Start in safe mode / Safe mode with networking / Safe mode with command prompt / Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked) / Start Windows normally.) and everything, there is a countdown for starting windows normally, but for some reason my arrow keys dont work. I tried both num pads and the normal arrow keys and nothing works, including enter.

Jun 6, 2009I have a keyboard with some of those "Extra" buttons on top like those shortcuts "Mail,home, favorites, forward, rewind, play, pause...etc" well you'know the buttons that no one in the world ever uses, now I don't know what happened, but my keyboard got a short-circuit apparently (maybe someone spelled something on it or something) and what happened was, the Up arrow had got shorted with the "My Computer" button, and the left arrow with the "Calculator" shortcut, so each time I press up it opens the My Computer window, and each time I press left it opens Windows Calculator, now you can imagine how annoying that could be when playing games, you press one arrow and poof, you'll be Alt-ctrl-deleting for the next hour, so is there a way to disable those buttons? as in make windows ignore the command once it receives it?...........

Aug 1, 2005I installed Spanish in a program, and it says I should be able to type CTRL+SHIFT+a to get the a with an accent, and various other shourtcuts. None of these work. In fact, the only way I can get a Spanish character to appear is by using the ascii codes (ALT+0241 for the Spanish ñ, etc) I can find some characters if I hit the ALT+SHIFT combo -- just not all the characters, and then I can't use certain keys (like the = sign becomes an upside-down question mark ¿ why the special keyboard mappings would not work?

Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
Filter A Folder - Special Command To Type At The Command Prompt?
Nov 21, 2009I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?

May 11, 2008Earlier today, when logging on to my profile, I saw a message box that I think said something along the lines of "Windows cannot update your profile". The message box also had a timer counting down from 25. I clicked "OK" on the message box and proceeded to my desktop. However, once my profile was loaded, all items i My Documents were no longer there. In addition, it seemed as if several Properties were set back to their default states (i.e. my background picture was changed, my theme was changed etc.) Also, the only folder that now exists in the place of My Documents is "C:Documents and Settings TEMPMy Documents".

Jul 13, 2005I recently received a military registration form which I had to download to my documents. It downloaded successfully. The problem is, it will not let me open it. When I double click on the ICON I get an error message. To wit:"The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxes to continue." I do have Norton Antivirus 2005 and a Pop Up Blocker activated. If this is the problem must I deleted them both before I can read my document or, being a beginner, am I simply missing something obvious.

Cleaning it up to sell, and I've renamed the Administrator's name, removed all software, changed the computer name for my network, in essence, getting it ready to sell. But in the Documents and Settings folder is a sub-folder with her name. When I try to change the name XP says no, it's a system file. Short of hacking the registry, how can I change the name.
Print Document On Word - Freezes
Jan 26, 2008when i go to print a document on word it freezes and i have to close down word this also happens on other programs aswell including notepad. I have tried to go in to the control panel to sort it out but when i click on printer and faxes it just freezes and i have to close it again using the task manager.

Feb 28, 2007I recently changed my text handler from Notepad to Metapad cause I like it better. Could that be why it dissappeared from my right click menu? Anyhow, anyone know where this is in the registry. Oh yeah, I also have TWEAK UI but for some reason, in the templates, I can't create a new template there. I tried with Notepad.exe, and also with Wordpad aka Write.exe but I get an error message saying: "This document cannot be used as a document template."
I also have FRESH UI and in Fresh UI, I selected "New" context menu and added extention ".txt" (without the quotes) and it confirmed that I sucessfully added the extention but it doesn't show up in the menu, even after three reboots. This is strange because it was always there, the option to create a .txt document in the right clickNew but it just disappeared.
One more thing, as per some website, I created a folder in Windows called "ShellNew" and put a blank text file in it from Notepad and then did some registry editing in HKEY classes root/ .txt as suggested from this website and created a new string etc blah blah, where you point to the SHELLNEW folder where the text file was but this did not work either.
Losing Cuser While Typing Document
Jun 11, 2005While typing a docment, a sound will occur and I will lose my curser. This causes me to put the arrow where I want to type and left click to reset the cuser. This incident seems to occur every so often at about a minute or use. This is annoying and I do not know why this is occurring. My operating system is XP. There is no error message just a sound. You can see that it says deleting but it just sits there and never goes away.
