why do a lot of my XP folders and files in them folders seem to have lost their name tags? In other words it shows the foler but no name underneath it. In an MP3 folder this makes it guesswork as to which files I am picking.I have to move the cursor over the file and wait for the box to pop up for its details.

Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
when i opened up my favourites folder in explorer some of my folders have disappeared my daughter has been on the computer but swears she has not even opened favourites,can anyone tell me why this has happened and if it is possible to retrieve my folders.I have tried system restore but it did not help
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a new hard drive in my laptop, installed a new clean copy of xp-sp2. No problems. Put the old HD in a case with a USB connection so that I could retreive my files/programs... but most of them were in folders on the desktop, and the X:/My Documents/User/Desktop folder is empty. (Win Explorer is set to display hidden and system folders) I've checked every location I can think of, and I can't find those folders/files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have XP Professional as my operating system and everything was fine until last Friday. I have quite a lot of my favourite music tracks installed on my PC as I like to listen to them while I'm working. The problem I've got is this, I like to edit the ID3 tags on these tracks to take away all of the techie info that come with them. This i do through the properties dialogue box. Until last Friday this dialogue box had four tabs showing, General, Audio Properties, ID Tag and Summary. Somewhere along the line the Audio Properties and ID Tag pages have disappeared. Has anybody got any ideas as to how I can reclaim them.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq laptop on XP that is up to date. Norton runs clean. I believe my modem is going bad because whenever I�m on the internet and minimize IE the computer locks up. In about five minutes it starts running and all the things I clicked on while it was locked up appear, as if they were all running in the background. The pc works fine if I�m not using the modem. I�m on vacation and have other modems at home. Several times I held the power button down when it was hung up. One of those times I lost my profile so that when it starts up it can�t find local settings and it has to build a temp profile. I built another profile but all of my old Outlook folders are missing. I�ve done multiple searches for *.pst but can�t find them, even looking in hidden files. I�ve found an old pst file that I made as a backup last year but when I try to load it into my new profile/ user it says I don�t have permission to access these files. The new user I built is set as administrator. I tried moving a copy from the cd to my user but then it asked for a password which I never set. Here are my questions,
1)Is there any way to find the folders in my old Outlook?
2)Is there a way to change the permission on the old pst file on my backup cd? I tried finding it in the registry after I moved it to my user but was unable to?
3)Scanpst.exe needs a pst file to work on which I can�t find.
4)I�ve reloaded the driver for the modem but that didn�t help. Any thoughts?
5)When you archive the mail where is it kept? I did this last week.

I'm 55 so I guess I forgot how to download them as individual songs and not have them arbitrarily placed in folders predetermined by Windows. I remember a musicmatch and/or real networks technician told me once how to change my settings so they are captured as individual songs. Probably a simple answer, but I don't remember it.

I am trying to get my neighbors computer running for her and am having a really hard time with it.There are about 5 (so far) dll files missing and only have found three of them to download. Now, the problem I am mainly having is after I download them to a CD to put in her system, either I cannot unzip them because I don't have Express Zip or when I place them in the correct folder (going by online instruction) either I get another error message or it says being used by windows somewhere else. I don't know what to do.I am at my wits end, yet am determined to help her. Having this done else where could cost her a lot of money. The op. syst. she has is Windows ME.I don't know much else about her system at this point.I downloaded a repair program which was the ONLY thing that would load in her system and when it was done scanning, it needed to go to the net for the repairs.I cannot reinstall her ISP because of the missing files.What do I do?

Each subfolder had multiple files in them. When I went to access one, ALL of the SUBFOLDERS and ALL of the FILES were gone. I tried a system restore, and it brought back the subfolders, but not the files. I then tried TuneUp, CleanUP, HijackThis, Ewido, Micrsoft Antispyware, Lavasoft, and many other programs to bring back the files, but nothing can find them. The problem is this:Ont the hard-drive which survived I have a lot of data which I need to get access to. In the "Documents and settings" folder I get access to 3 out of 5 profiles, but not the one I need to get access to. I had password set on those two user accounts. I guess this is the reason why I don't get access to those two folders. When I try to access those two folders I get "Access denied". How do I override this? Do I need to remove the SID?

The way it works now, the folders are always grouped separately from the normal files. I typically sort by filename and I'd like the folders to be mixed in with the files, sorted by name just as if they were regular files themselves.I know this isn't an error condition, but it is an annoyance. Basically, all of the icons have turned white and although I can open all of the files without any problems, I can't turn off the PC. Every time I click on the shut down button, nothing happens. I think all of this happened because of StyleXP, a program which I've downloaded today, but got rid of pretty fast. The problems started after uninstalling StyleXP. I don't know what to do right now so that's why I had to ask for help here.
I restarted Windows XP one day, thinking nothing of it, however, at the boot up screen, it gave me the message that one of my files was corrupt and couldn't start. No biggie, this has happened to me before, I know how to fix it. However, when I popped in the XP Pro boot disk, it gave me the option to do a system restore (I accessed this by going to install Windows XP, and then selecting the operating system I had currently installed to recover). I chose to do this, thinking it would save me time. It did in one respect, in that I can now start Windows XP, the only problem is that it's now as if I completely reinstalled Windows i.e. all my files and programs are gone. However, when I open my C: drive, all my files are there, I can see them and access some of them, however, others, such as My Documents, I can't access, although they have to be somewhere on my computer, because my C drive is still filled to capacity. I tried searching for files and folders to find some of my documents to no avail. I tried doing a system restore, however, all the restore points I created are no longer there.
