I am a big music downloader (all paid for, thank you)! I'm 55 so I guess I forgot how to download them as individual songs and not have them arbitrarily placed in folders predetermined by Windows. I remember a musicmatch and/or real networks technician told me once how to change my settings so they are captured as individual songs. Probably a simple answer, but I don't remember it.

I have the folder in the details view, and know how to change which details it shows, but can't for the life of me figure out how to actually change the individual details of each folder. eg add the 'Year' detail column, how do I input the year for each folder? this seems like the most obvious, simple thing but is alluding me at the moment.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to download a file from the Internet, I get a box sasying "Run/Open", "Save", and "Cancel" as always. When I click on either of the first two options, however, the box simply clicks and unclicks with no actions following it. Almost as if you click "Post" in a forum, but you hold the click on it and move the cursor elsewhere, stopping the system from performing that action. On some days, I can get my system to download about 5 files before I can no longer click "Save" or "Open".
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen online, all downloaded files I save take almost exactly 30 seconds to save to their location. Download speed is normal, the files are already downloaded. The only problem is the delay in saving. This happened all of a sudden. No new programs were added or settings changed. File size has no bearing - 2KB takes the same time to save as 200KB. Same delay for saving photos, html pages & images saved by a screen capture program.
Offline all graphics capabilities & copying is normal. System is clean, no virus, spyware etc.
HD is de-fragged, page file is de-fragged, all temp files emptied. Has happened before & a re-installation of XP fixes it, but I'd like to find out what's causing it?
Recently when I try to open or save a file from any application then it takes about 5 minutes before the pop up window appears where I can select which file/directory etc.
This has just started and is very annoying. It's a laptop and there are quite a few hortcuts in My Network Neighbourhood pointing to network drives when I'm in work.ever this hasn't given me a problem before and none of them are mapped.I did use a web based storage site and it downloaded an application to synchronise a folder with the web older.......there was a mapped drive I think but I uninstalled the application and that also deleted the mapped drive. Is the computer still trying to find the mapped drive (although it doesn't show up in Explorer?).
I have a 60GB hard drive that says it is full. I have relatively few programs on my machine and only about 10 GB worth of music/pictures/movies. What is using all my hard drive memory and how do I fix? Does XP save the files in two places?

As the capacity of the USB stick is limited, I will have to delete older backups when I run my scheduled transfer of new files. I usually have these files encrypted as they are confidential. My question is where do they go if I delete them on the USB stick? Are they ending up on my harddrive or in the recycle bin of the harddrive from where they can still be retrieved later on? Do USB sticks have their own recycle bin or some area where deleted files slumber?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was running System Mechanic as a routine - (i.e. not a virus, or spyware problem), and Windows XP decided it wanted to do an install of some service pack automatically - which it did an auto reboot in the middle of SM running! Grrr...system froze when it came back up. I came back to just see the frozen screen and SM screen closed - and it ookedrebooted. Now when the computer is turned on in safe mode or regular, it just does a DOS listing of missing drivers - very extensive list. Got a CD hard copy of System Mechanic - but now am told if I use it to rescue the computer, it will delete my files! Yikes!My computer, Xplio, came with Windows installed. The rescue disk, if I can find it, (may be in storage) I believe also says it deletes files if used...one reason I didn't keep it out and easily found. 1. How do I save / rescue my files???? I have many years of nonprofit work on the computer I don't want to lose. 2. Can the computer be "saved"? 3. Is there a way to use someone else's Windows XP disks with their passwords (legitimate copy) on my computer to reinstall the missing drivers? OR - can all the drivers be downloaded from somewhere - ideally for free? I can prove I have/ had legitimate right to Windows XP - I noticed Microsoft charges for tech support - guess I am naive - was surprised it would charge for first call ever!

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just reformated my computer. i have 2 hard drives. one which stores all my system files, os etc. and onther which i use just for storage. When i restarted my computer for the first time since reformating i had a message sayinf somthing alng the lines of: "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue."i wasnt at my computer so it decided to go ahead and do it anyway. by the time i got to my computer and turned it off, booted it back up and avoided the dick check again on start up it had already deleted 20 gigs of my music files. It was saying somthing about orphened files when it was running through deleting everything from image files to mp3s. please let me know if there is a way to resotr my deleted files or find out exactly what was deleted.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery music folder in My Music after C (cameo!) has disapeared although I know they are still there - i can still play them in itunes and even open the song folder but if I copy it and drop it back into My Music it vanishes. Windows doesn't even recognise the memory that the missing files use and thinks the folder holds 3 gigs when its more like 30. Just wondering if there is anything I can try before going through the hassle of reformating.

(About 1200 mp3 files all inside these 100 folders...all inside 1 folder if that makes any sense)I'm thinking about moving all those mp3's outside there folders so that i have just one continuous stream of mp3's. It all transferred well, however, when I open the files and edit them it does not allow me to "save as" on that same cd on the D drive and says, "You do not have permission to save in this directory. See the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?" So it wants me to save what I have on the D Drive CD RW disk back to my C drive on my cpu.This is my computer, I am the administrator and have full permissions so I do not understand why I can't edit and save my own cd's.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI turned on my laptop, and many files were missing from folders. In particular, I had two folders on my desktop, with many subfolders in each. Each subfolder had multiple files in them. When I went to access one, ALL of the SUBFOLDERS and ALL of the FILES were gone. I tried a system restore, and it brought back the subfolders, but not the files. I then tried TuneUp, CleanUP, HijackThis, Ewido, Micrsoft Antispyware, Lavasoft, and many other programs to bring back the files, but nothing can find them. I also have a updated McAfee constantly running, and there was never a virus.

The problem is this:Ont the hard-drive which survived I have a lot of data which I need to get access to. In the "Documents and settings" folder I get access to 3 out of 5 profiles, but not the one I need to get access to. I had password set on those two user accounts. I guess this is the reason why I don't get access to those two folders. When I try to access those two folders I get "Access denied". How do I override this? Do I need to remove the SID?

The way it works now, the folders are always grouped separately from the normal files. I typically sort by filename and I'd like the folders to be mixed in with the files, sorted by name just as if they were regular files themselves.I know this isn't an error condition, but it is an annoyance. Basically, all of the icons have turned white and although I can open all of the files without any problems, I can't turn off the PC. Every time I click on the shut down button, nothing happens. I think all of this happened because of StyleXP, a program which I've downloaded today, but got rid of pretty fast. The problems started after uninstalling StyleXP. I don't know what to do right now so that's why I had to ask for help here.
I restarted Windows XP one day, thinking nothing of it, however, at the boot up screen, it gave me the message that one of my files was corrupt and couldn't start. No biggie, this has happened to me before, I know how to fix it. However, when I popped in the XP Pro boot disk, it gave me the option to do a system restore (I accessed this by going to install Windows XP, and then selecting the operating system I had currently installed to recover). I chose to do this, thinking it would save me time. It did in one respect, in that I can now start Windows XP, the only problem is that it's now as if I completely reinstalled Windows i.e. all my files and programs are gone. However, when I open my C: drive, all my files are there, I can see them and access some of them, however, others, such as My Documents, I can't access, although they have to be somewhere on my computer, because my C drive is still filled to capacity. I tried searching for files and folders to find some of my documents to no avail. I tried doing a system restore, however, all the restore points I created are no longer there.

My old HDD was dying and has a S.M.A.R.T. error (although it will still boot and run it is getting slow).So I bought a new drive, slammed it in the case and decided to do a nice clean reinstall (XP Home with all the SP2 and updates available).I left the old drive in the bay and was hoping to copy across any odd file However I get a lot of "Access is Denied" messages when trying to view/read/change attributes on files/folders especially in Documents & Settings.
