I recently lost all of my files when I used a recovery disc. I am not a computer whiz, but I do know that they are still in the hardrive somewhere. Is this correct? Is there a free program out there that can recover these files?
View 7 RepliesSome time ago, my PC had some serious problem and I lost most of my windows files... or files in my windows dir. To get back to my files I re-installed windows.. somehow. Anyway... it works pretty good for the most part but it does seem to load very slowly most of the time... Can you suggest anything to help? HJT log.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have no way of restoring my default windows xp theme!let me first explain that i downloaded several custom themes for my computer and didnt care to revert back to the orignal theme until now. i recently downloaded a theme and have used it for a month but now i want to change it all back to my original xp theme and cant find a way to do it. windows xp theme is selectable in my theme tab but the only thing it will change is my wallpaper and the sounds. i still have the taskbar and windows and icons from the last theme i used! i checked to see if i had the luna theme in my windows folder and i did and i have looked through alot of google groups to find a solution and have almost tried them all. ive went and downloaded registry keys that are supposed to fix the problem but they havent.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy sole 80 G hard drive had a 15 G FAT 32 partition that is the C drive (partition). My XP Pro SP2 OS is an upgrade from 98, which is why I used FAT32. The balance of the drive is the F drive (partition) is/was formatted as NTFS so I could use it more efficiently in editing video. While using DVD Shrink 3.2 and directing the copy to a folder in F I experienced a lockup. After rebooting I no longer show F. I've tried a sys restore but my only restore point was this morning and that didn't work. When I tried to defrag the hard drive it doesn't show F as it has.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen me and my wife moved in with her parents to help take care of her father.When he passed I was givin his computer wich was left on and password protected.What I did was create another user account as an administrater and demoted him to just a user figuring that would allow me to remove his password.I forgot to bump him back up to administrator before I deleted the other user and now I am stuck with only 1 account and it has no administrator rights.I do not have the windows XP disk either =/ I would like to change the account back to administrator and retain the files as well.

I've been collecting raw data night and day for research from a subscribed data provider (Worldscope/Datastream) for nearly 3 weeks. I kept the PC running day and night because I set up the "Request Manager" for data query. Every one or two day, I saved the batches of data downloaded, cleaned the raw data using SAS, and then ran the next query, and so on. Everything had been fine until one day when I came back to the office to do the usual tasks. To my surprise, my PC look very, very much like it's been reinstalled from scratch without saving anything. Symptons that persuade me to conclude this way is:
- No files/folders that I set up on desktop were there
- My settings are all totally different: I used to keep Task Bar on the right, now it's at the bottom. All "Favorites" on Internet Explorer/Firefox/Google Chrome are all gone, nothing there, no favorites, no favorite bars....
- Usually, when I use hotmail, skype, yahoo mail, etc..., I entered username and leave the PC remember it so that I won't have to re-enter username everytime I want to check for mails. Now, when I open hotmail, skype or yahoo, it's all gone just as if somebody reset the internet explorer or something
- Previously, whenever inside WORD/EXCEL I always see files on "Recent Documents", or when clicking on Start Menu, I used to see files on "My Recent Documents". NOW, on that terrible day, there's nothing like that. ALL GONE, it looks just like somebody has reinstalled the PC without letting us know
- Previously, I kept the settings for Internet Explorer, let's say I keep small Google on the top far right corner but removed Google toolbar with many features. Now, Google toolbars with full features are there, just as if somebody reinstalled Internet Explorer and reinstalled Google toolbars with full features without customizing
- All things that often stay on "Recent Documents" or things like that in some applications such as SAS, Stata, etc... are all gone
ONE MORE THING: My university sometimes runs maintenance for all PCs in the School and in the lab. I'm talking about this because perhaps the maintenance automatically reinstalled the whole PC??? I suspect it couldn't???
I just noticed that I don't have my D drive listed under My Computer. Is there anyway I can get it back outside of System Restore? I'd just had to use that to undo some updates.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy norton anti-virus said that some files were mssing. It said that if I restored my computer to an earlier date that this should correct the problem. My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running a PC clone, Win XP SP3. It is using a wired connection to a router. Yesterday, out of no where, I lost connection to the internet. No browsers, Trillian, nothing that uses the internet works. I tried running a virus scan, malware scan and found nothing. I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work, for a brief moment I had the internet again. Then, once more, it stopped working.
Right now, the current speculation is that the onboard network connection is dying. What I'm trying to find out, is if that is possible or not. I'm not worried about having to buy a card - they're cheap. I am worried about buying a new card and it not fixing the problem.Are there other things that can cause this to happen that I can/should look into first?
The registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

Now, the problem I am mainly having is after I download them to a CD to put in her system, either I cannot unzip them because I don't have Express Zip or when I place them in the correct folder (going by online instruction) either I get another error message or it says being used by windows somewhere else. I don't know what to do.I am at my wits end, yet am determined to help her. Having this done else where could cost her a lot of money. The op. syst. she has is Windows ME.I don't know much else about her system at this point.I downloaded a repair program which was the ONLY thing that would load in her system and when it was done scanning, it needed to go to the net for the repairs.I cannot reinstall her ISP because of the missing files.What do I do?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer was recently in for repair. I told the technician under no account were any files to be deleted/erased. When I got the computer home after repair I noticed that although my files were indeed 'untouched' (not deleted) they were however in a 'place' where I knew I would have trouble finding. I made a mental note that I would get back to finding my photos later. I had to download and re-install my security system first and foremost as well as Windows updates. One of these Windows Updates (Service Pack 3 maybe) advised to back-up my files before installing. I didn't.
Now I can't find these files/photos/pictures anywhere on my computer. There were over 4000.
Have I lost these for good ? Or is there a way to recover them ?
i accidently dragged some files to the "C:Documents and SettingAll UsersDocumentsConfig" and now whenever i click those folders so that i can open them it gives me an error "C:Documents and SettingAll UsersDocumentsConfigFILES" is not accessible Access Denied it also tell me that the FOLDER is EMPTY what's worst is that it's still taking space from my drive i dont know if there's a way that i can recover those files or at least delete the folder
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer rebooted itself a few days ago. When it did this my computer stopped at the log in user screen. I've never had any other users setup on my computer. When rebooting it always goes straight to the windows desktop. After that I noticed that my desktop picture and all of the folders I had on the desktop were gone. My favorites were removed form IE8 and I keep getting a security settings warning bar that doesn't let me fix it. I click fix my setting and it looks like it does then on the next page it pops up again. So I had to create another user with admin rights to use for the internet. I can find all of my files that were on the desktop but they are showing up under user owner but if I log into widows with user owner they don't show up. I also show another user with no admin rights and is password protected. ASP.NET machine A?

But, I was wondering if there was a way to take ownership of all the files on the computer without having to do each one individually? I did that several times but the problem was still there. So, after the recovery I normally started the computer and logged on. I did the non-destructive system recovery. Anyways;I noticed that all my files I had in the Shared Docuemnts were stil there. View 15 Replies View RelatedFirst off I am new to the forums and I really hope that someone can help me. I am not sure if I posted this in the right area but hopefully I did. Yesterday I relocated my girlfriends computer. I shut it down, disconnected everything and re-set it all up. Once everything was connected, I turned it on. I noticed that it took forever and that there were a ton of applications being opened upon start up. So I went to run and went to msconfig to disable them all. Afterwoods I restarted the computer. Once it rebooted, I did a disk cleanup as well as a defrag. All went fine. Then a window popped up saying that there was an update available and I agreed to update the computer. I remember it saying that it was a windows service pack 3. Anyway the update went through with no issues to my knowledge. Well this morning she went to use it an dnoticed that there were several problems. One the user account that was established no longer exhists, all of her photos, videos, and music is gone, and the computer is not reconizing the wireless card we have for the internet so she cannot connect. Naturally she is blaming me for all these problems cause I was that last person on the computer and I cannot see how I screwed this all up.
