I have no way of restoring my default windows xp theme!let me first explain that i downloaded several custom themes for my computer and didnt care to revert back to the orignal theme until now. i recently downloaded a theme and have used it for a month but now i want to change it all back to my original xp theme and cant find a way to do it. windows xp theme is selectable in my theme tab but the only thing it will change is my wallpaper and the sounds. i still have the taskbar and windows and icons from the last theme i used! i checked to see if i had the luna theme in my windows folder and i did and i have looked through alot of google groups to find a solution and have almost tried them all. ive went and downloaded registry keys that are supposed to fix the problem but they havent.
I managed to completely mess myself up with one mouse click. D'oh. Essentially, some joker put a theme which set EVERYTHING to black windows, text fields, text, background, everything in my theme file and I accidentally hamfistedly clicked it. This means I can't see a danged thing. I can't see the window if I right click, I can't see what I'm doing to change the theme back to something viewable. So essentially my question is this. is there a way to *force* the theme/colour of your desktop and windows to revert to Windows default BEFORE you finish the boot process i.e. bios, etc. or from the cmd line alone? (No regedit - I can type in command line but not in regedit.)I'd rather not have to do a system restore, I'd lose a bunch of stuff I really don't want to lose!
I originally lost my windows "luna" themes and it reverted back to classic themes only at this point it would not let me change the theme without giving me a much dreaded error message for even highlighting the new theme rightclickdesktop -> properties -> appearance I can no longer change the selected theme as the box and drop down is "greyed out" and locked for some reason However, i can change the color and font and effects and advanced. Unfortunately, without an external program like Tuneup Utilities 2009 i can not change my theme back to XP's Luna theme from classic any other way of my knowledge. So i have to run that program every time i restart if i want my theme back every time i get on my pc.
After an attempt to install a new dvd player, my windows XP Luna theme (the one for windows xp verses windows classic) is gone! I try to click on the file but when you say ok, an alert window pops up and says that the "theme service is not loaded" and to "turn it on in the Computer Management Administrative Tool in the Control Panel." How on earth do you do this? I cannot figure it out.
After doing some maintenance on my computer, simply removing old unused programs through the "add / remove programs" option in 'control panel', I lost my ability to have any XP based theme. While I was doing the cleanup a few programs asked me to restart or continue, I selected continue until I was done removing all of the programs that I no longer needed or used... Once I did restart it came back up and everything runs great, but No XP look
One out every five boots, my system starts up with what looks like a classic theme (win98) instead of xp. Sometimes I can switch the theme back to XP, sometimes I have tpo reboot several times to get that fix to work, and sometimes it boots up ok. I am running a pretty basic HP nx6110 laptop with windows XP pro, windows has been reloaded and updated with the latest patches, but this problem still persists.
I come home to visit my family for Christmas last night and use my old desktop. its working fine besides its a little slow. i figure its from my little sister downloading stuff. easily fixed problem. so i try to fix the problem by deleting things that were useless to her and i and were making the computer slow. i restart the computer and my windows xp theme has disappeared, there are no more network places or networks, for that matter, and i have no sound card now.
Just re-installed Windows XP on a Eee computer. Installation went well but somewhere along the way I seem to have lost some of my sounds. I have tried the default button but still only a skeleton sound scheme.
Was upgraded to Office 2003 but has plain gray borders; I had it at last firm and overall look was blue which I believe was the XP theme. Under Display Properties > Color scheme, Windows XP is not a choice. I'm thinking I'm missing the XP Theme (Themes as a service is running) but can't seem to find the download on www.microsoft.com
I have downloaded an icon theme from www.everaldo.com The icons look great but I have no idea how to apply them. I downloaded it as a .tar.gz and then I extracted it to a folder containing folders with different sized icon, a file called ".dolphinview" and an "index.theme" file. I tried simply opening the index.theme file from "themes" in display properties but it cannot read it. When I open it in OOO and compare it to a theme it looks very different, a theme starts with [Theme] whereas this begins with [Icon Theme]. I think I am supposed to attach the index.theme file to my theme but I have no idea how.

i was facing the problem of not being able to connect to the internet for trojan removals reasons...after sick of not having a solution..i decided to reformatt or set up a new windows...now i can'tdo this either....
Lately my computer had been getting slower and slower, so I decided that I would "reformat" it. I got my compaq recovery cd and restarted my computer and brought up the setup. Apparently I made the mistake of pressing the restore defaults option because now my computer won't boot up. It will show the compaq thing and then it brings me to a black screen that says "Starting Windows 98" and then lists some information that doesn't pertain to rebooting the computer and then gives me this A:> and then the option to type somthing. So far I can't find out what to do. I also can't find a way to use my recovery cd either. Is there anyway that I can get my computer back again by either setup, the disk, or the A:> function? If so can someone please help me?
I'm running Windows XP professional and when I change my desktop icons (my computer, my documents, my network places, recycle bin full and & empty) they revert back to the default settings when I restart my system. This doesn't effect my wallpaper, start menu settings or personalized colors, only the icons. The file that I'm using is an *.ico file which I know works fine. (I've used this file when I was still using windows 98.) I've also tried making a "theme" with the saved settings and that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if it's some simple setting that I'm over looking. Something stupid like "Restore default icons on restart"...I'd rather not edit my registry if I don't have to.
I recently lost all of my files when I used a recovery disc. I am not a computer whiz, but I do know that they are still in the hardrive somewhere. Is this correct? Is there a free program out there that can recover these files?
I have lost all my system Restore points, How to restore these restore points back? More than Fixing, Why it did happened? What should I to prevent this happening again? I Haven't turned off system restore points niether disk space setttings, it's remain Max 12%. I do have more than enough disk space.
I get into System Restore using..However , when I click on 'System restore' nothing happens. Can anyone help me to overcome this? In addition , how can I put a shortcut onto my desktop to get into 'System Restore' ?
My sole 80 G hard drive had a 15 G FAT 32 partition that is the C drive (partition). My XP Pro SP2 OS is an upgrade from 98, which is why I used FAT32. The balance of the drive is the F drive (partition) is/was formatted as NTFS so I could use it more efficiently in editing video. While using DVD Shrink 3.2 and directing the copy to a folder in F I experienced a lockup. After rebooting I no longer show F. I've tried a sys restore but my only restore point was this morning and that didn't work. When I tried to defrag the hard drive it doesn't show F as it has.
Computer is not shutting down When I click Shutdown? Also, I lost all my System restore Points and cannot use that Option. I don't know how I lost all the restore points. Need help to restore that too.
When me and my wife moved in with her parents to help take care of her father. When he passed I was givin his computer wich was left on and password protected. What I did was create another user account as an administrater and demoted him to just a user figuring that would allow me to remove his password.I forgot to bump him back up to administrator before I deleted the other user and now I am stuck with only 1 account and it has no administrator rights.I do not have the windows XP disk either =/ I would like to change the account back to administrator and retain the files as well.
I've been collecting raw data night and day for research from a subscribed data provider (Worldscope/Datastream) for nearly 3 weeks. I kept the PC running day and night because I set up the "Request Manager" for data query. Every one or two day, I saved the batches of data downloaded, cleaned the raw data using SAS, and then ran the next query, and so on. Everything had been fine until one day when I came back to the office to do the usual tasks. To my surprise, my PC look very, very much like it's been reinstalled from scratch without saving anything. Symptons that persuade me to conclude this way is:
- No files/folders that I set up on desktop were there
- My settings are all totally different: I used to keep Task Bar on the right, now it's at the bottom. All "Favorites" on Internet Explorer/Firefox/Google Chrome are all gone, nothing there, no favorites, no favorite bars....
- Usually, when I use hotmail, skype, yahoo mail, etc..., I entered username and leave the PC remember it so that I won't have to re-enter username everytime I want to check for mails. Now, when I open hotmail, skype or yahoo, it's all gone just as if somebody reset the internet explorer or something
- Previously, whenever inside WORD/EXCEL I always see files on "Recent Documents", or when clicking on Start Menu, I used to see files on "My Recent Documents". NOW, on that terrible day, there's nothing like that. ALL GONE, it looks just like somebody has reinstalled the PC without letting us know
- Previously, I kept the settings for Internet Explorer, let's say I keep small Google on the top far right corner but removed Google toolbar with many features. Now, Google toolbars with full features are there, just as if somebody reinstalled Internet Explorer and reinstalled Google toolbars with full features without customizing
- All things that often stay on "Recent Documents" or things like that in some applications such as SAS, Stata, etc... are all gone
ONE MORE THING: My university sometimes runs maintenance for all PCs in the School and in the lab. I'm talking about this because perhaps the maintenance automatically reinstalled the whole PC??? I suspect it couldn't???
I just noticed that I don't have my D drive listed under My Computer. Is there anyway I can get it back outside of System Restore? I'd just had to use that to undo some updates.
Im working on my grandpas computer and in the trail end of cleaning up at least 20+ viruses/trojans, however, the system restore tab is gone and when I click on properties for my computer I get the error message "The procedure entry point RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be located in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll"
I've found a way to get a theme out of XP-Windows Server 2003 without using the theme service. It's basically a variation of the silver theme. The steps are assuming you don't have the theme service turned on.
1.Open the Run command and type in services.msc
2.Find Themes, double click it and start the service
I am running a PC clone, Win XP SP3. It is using a wired connection to a router. Yesterday, out of no where, I lost connection to the internet. No browsers, Trillian, nothing that uses the internet works. I tried running a virus scan, malware scan and found nothing. I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work, for a brief moment I had the internet again. Then, once more, it stopped working.
Right now, the current speculation is that the onboard network connection is dying. What I'm trying to find out, is if that is possible or not. I'm not worried about having to buy a card - they're cheap. I am worried about buying a new card and it not fixing the problem. Are there other things that can cause this to happen that I can/should look into first?
In an XP-Home, one user system, what shoul be the defautl values found in the following registry entry: HKU.DEFAULTSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders ??To make a long story short, there are entries pointing to a non existing user's folder (eg: C:Documents and SettingsTEMP....) and I want to get rid of this TEMP user and folder. This is the only section of the registry where this folder is referenced.
My boot.ini files on my 2 intentional operating systems have been modified to look, it seems to me, identical (see 1st attached thumbnail). First 2 for the intended ini, the second the old improper, though still currently functional, boot.ini.old. Both of these are on separate partions on the first internal hard drive, and I have tried turning off my 1 external during boot-up as well as disabling my 2nd internal on the "boot settings", with the same results. The default should be the "Graphics" system, according to the Boot.ini
I was very curious when Vista came out. I searched google for Vista theme for XP. When I found it I install it, but installed few XP to Vista programs and my theme is totally bad. Now I need your help how to get previous theme. I tried to use uninstall options in XP to Vista programs but that didn't work.
