When I carry out an auto-update on my Network Associates VirusScan my desktop disappears when the installation of the data file completes. The only way to
restore the desktop seems to be to reboot the machine.
I have a HP Pavilion A1624N computer, running Windows Media Center 2005.
AMD 64 x 2 Processor 2.0 GHz, 1 Gig of RAM.
All of a sudden yesterday morning when I right clicked on my desktop and un-checked Show Desktop Icons (to take a print screen for my friend) the problem started. This worked fine, I did the print screen and saved it in paint no problem. But when I right clicked again and then chose Show Desktop Icons, they came back, but my wallpaper disappeared. I tried several ways to get it back
Using Windows XP and just updated to Internet Explorer 7. All of my desktop shortcuts get hung up since the IE update. I have access to the internet and am able to go to any website though.

Started only yesterday,Intenet Explorer just disappears off my desktop, whether minimized or maximized. I have rebooted, it still does this occasionally? Any ideas what could be causing this. I am well scanned for virus, ant-spy, malware, and keep my registry clean with Personal Computer DOC, C-Cleaner, and Cleanup.

whenever i try to open a batch file an ms-dos window opens up and then it disappears in less than a second. No program will run. I've tried to run lqfix.bat and smitRem's runthis.bat. I need to know how to make this stop happening because i need to run smitrem to rid myself of a virus.

I was running AVG anti virus. Now I removed AVG and installed Microsoft supplied security essential software. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently had an annoying pop-up on my screen telling me I was infected , my Norton had expired so I loaded all the McAfee gubbins I got with my EasyNote E2 in 2005, after doing a scan it found 1 trojan and about 15 potentially harmful things! Not thinking , I deleted the lot even though it said that some files may be linked to applications and now when I boot up I get the PB purple screen, then the XP screen and the blue welcome screen, after this I see the picture I set as wallpaper stretched over the entire screen, then the screen goes pink (colour I chose for background) but once the icons start appearing on the desktop the screen goes white with a slight tinge of pink aound the icons. I can't even browse for pics to set as wallpaper and when I go into MY PICTURES and right click to "set as wallpaper" nothing happens.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer has been messing up alot lately and i've ignored it because I was getting a new computer and at the worse, I could get someone at any point to look at it at their leasure to fix it up.But that was suppose to be 2 months ago and my computer does not let me get to a safemode/command prompt or the desktop to let me use start/run and the such. I put in the CD and i get a hal.dll error that its missing or corrupt and so far, each way that I can fix that requires me to go to desktop and do so. I want to reformat my computer so that it will run at the very least until I get a new computer. Also, when I say 'unable to get to desktop' i mean it shows just the wallpaper and doesn't let me even go to task manager.Does anyone have any solutions? I need a computer for school so that when i want to work late nights on a project or something, i can instead of getting off my parents' at 9pm and being screwed.
View 12 Replies View RelatedWindows XP. I already have a current anti virus - the ESET NOD32 Antivirus. My room mate who isnt familiar with sanity (Hehehe), installed Kaspersky. When she restarted, it hangs. You can only move your mouse cursor and that's it. When you try to click the Start Menu the mouse icon changes to processing (the hour glass icon) and forever remains like that. Nor can I display the Task Manager - mouse cursor still displays the everlasting hour glass icon.
When I got home and tried to boot the pc (it is a desktop computer by the way. not a laptop), it still hangs like crazy. So, I reboot, went to SAFE MODE and did the SYSTEM RESTORE, date before the Kaspersky installation. And it didnt work (obviously since I am here in this forum posting my problem). Computer still hangs like crazy and this time, it doesnt show any desktop icon. I didn't get mad with my roomate since I see no point of it. :P So, I just want this resolve. My last resort will be to reformat my Windows Drive C: but I am not ready to say farewell to some of my softwares that I have no soft copy.
I recently got over a virus and got rid of it but afterwards it doesnt allow me to change my desktop background. My original picture shows up for a second on startup then goes black. It also shows up just before log off too.

An office laptop running XP Home was riddled with malware - spyfighter, pcadprotector, CSW.HomeSearch etc. I've managed to remove them all after a full day of hassle but I'm still left with a frustrating issue in that I cannot adjust the desktop background. The properties box is greyed out for backgrounds. We have a simple peer to peer network (workgroup in fact) and no internal security or policies. What can I do before I throw the thing out of the window?

The main thing I notice is that it prevents me from installing some programs . AVG gives me some random error code and AIM and MSN say that I need to not be in safe mode to install.During reformat there is an error that invovles M.dll. I remember looking it up on google and it invovles a list of dll files or virus list or something to that effect. Anyway, it wouldnt let me install it during the reformat installation of windows. I tried to download it and put it in system32 folder, but it didn't help.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi got windows xp home and im unable to enter my desktop or login, when i start up i get to the windows xp home logo and the process bar, but after that everything turns black and stays that way forever.i can't enter safe mode, the computer simply dont let me, i tap the safe mode options key, f12 for me, not f8, but the screen never shows up, it's like it doesnt register the key is there, i can tap f8 to get the booting options and f1 for bios options, but not the safe mode.
this happened after i found a virus in winlogon.exe, the AV deleted it and that is when things got messed up, although i have done this before actually, but then i just repair installed windows and everything went back to normal, but when i try this now, it doesnt work, it installs windows all over again, the blue screen and the yellow progress bar, but when it's suppose to reboot and then continue the installation
Hi I've recently had a virus on my PC and I finally got rid of it but it duplicated a lot of files on my computer. Is there a way to get rid of them without having to go through Windows Explorer and look at each folder and file?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi had the smitfraud virus. adaware and zonelabs could not clean it. microsoft had something that did get rid of it. now heres my problem. all of my exe files wont open. it tells me "missing shortcut" whether im clicking the icons from my desktop or from the start menu. most of my icons have changed as well. my hewlett packard printer icons are replaced with a windows icon. im not that great with computers but im pretty good with the basics

While looking at the system information details I noticed five processes under the name "svchost.exe" with the label "not available for all the information tabs (Path, Min working set, max working set, version, size) The same problem with a process called wmiprvse.exe. Please can you tell what is that and if this is a virus, worm or malware or is only a system process?
I have other for processes "svchost.exe" with the path determined "C:windowssystem 32svchost.exe. Is there any difference? I scaned my computer several time just yesterday.

I was surfing threw the wbe to find some keys for my dish network, anyways, i clicked on a site threw Google and so nothing interesting so i clicked back 30 secs later Norton started picking up virus and spy-ware repetitively so i did a full scan and it picked up one file which i deleted next i turned it to safe mode and restarted next thing i know my computer will not load to desktop once it reaches to loading desktop icon it restarts itself over and over again

View 5 Replies View Relatedi've recently gotten a virus on my computer that locks up everything and i can't even get to the task mgr or open up any thing. it wont let me go on the internet, it locks up the network also, unless i "pay for a virus protection program" which is absolutely pointless because we already have our vp. so far the only thing i've been able to do to "quarinteen" the virus is to hold the power button and just do the power off thing without shutting it down and then opening the computer in safe mode and then restoring it back to approx the last week and then restarting it.
