For the last month i had this virus that has survived 2 reformats and I had enough- I need to kick this thing. The main thing I notice is that it prevents me from installing some programs . AVG gives me some random error code and AIM and MSN say that I need to not be in safe mode to install.During reformat there is an error that invovles M.dll. I remember looking it up on google and it invovles a list of dll files or virus list or something to that effect. Anyway, it wouldnt let me install it during the reformat installation of windows. I tried to download it and put it in system32 folder, but it didn't help.

Hi I've recently had a virus on my PC and I finally got rid of it but it duplicated a lot of files on my computer. Is there a way to get rid of them without having to go through Windows Explorer and look at each folder and file?

We have a Dell Inspiron 6000, and it won't boot Windows XP, giving me the message system32configsystem is missing or corrupt. I've gone through a number of steps to recover, including using Windows XP startup disk to go into Recovery console, following MS knowledge base articles, running chkdsk, etc. What I've found out is that the "system" file from both windowssystem32config and from windows epair is gone.

Running Windows XP Home with service pack 2 on a Dell Dimension Desktop computer. We have no user names to click on in order to log on. Administrator password that has always worked, no longer works so repair isn't possible. What has been done so far:Removed the hard disk, connected it to a known-clean system and scanned for viruses with Norton Antivirus using definition date of 03/16/2005. No virus or suspicious files found. Ran chkdsk /f.It found and fixed errors in the file system.

As my system is running very slow, I decided to look for the source of the problem. While looking at the system information details I noticed five processes under the name "svchost.exe" with the label "not available for all the information tabs (Path, Min working set, max working set, version, size) The same problem with a process called wmiprvse.exe. Please can you tell what is that and if this is a virus, worm or malware or is only a system process?
I have other for processes "svchost.exe" with the path determined "C:windowssystem 32svchost.exe. Is there any difference? I scaned my computer several time just yesterday.

i've recently gotten a virus on my computer that locks up everything and i can't even get to the task mgr or open up any thing. it wont let me go on the internet, it locks up the network also, unless i "pay for a virus protection program" which is absolutely pointless because we already have our vp. so far the only thing i've been able to do to "quarinteen" the virus is to hold the power button and just do the power off thing without shutting it down and then opening the computer in safe mode and then restoring it back to approx the last week and then restarting it.

My laptop, a Toshiba, running XP Home, became infected and it had Norton's pre-installed [she never updated it].It barely booted and eventually I uninstalled it and have since ran a MULTITUDE of anti virus apps in an attempt to clean the poor thing: Panda, AVG, McAfee, they all did half a job and sometimes even gave up. Avast and Spybot seem to have done the trick... or... have they? The laptop is still snoozing and crashing everytime I open a browser. I don't know what to do.

I had a problem on booting which is caused by a virus which had corrupted some of the system files. All my efforts to get the system restore had failed. How do I get into the system to go to system restore points. All my efforts to choose all the alternatives in the screen such as safe boot, last known good configuration etc failed. It goes on a cyclic mode again and again coming to the same screen. In such a condition how to go to my system restore point to choose the earlier restore point.

I removed some programs from my computer using the "ad/remove programs" feature in the Control Panel. Since then I've started receiving error messages, primarily when starting or restarting my computer. I'm wondering whether I deleted some OS system files. The error messages I'm getting are:"Data Execution Prevention: To help protect your computer windows has closed this program." Another message says "DrWatson DeBugger...?" I have no idea what this is. I often get some thing like, "there has been a error and this program must shut down."

I recently recovered from a nasty virus on my laptop that 'slipped through' Norton AV.I pulled the hard drive and put in a USB enclosure kit and cleaned it with updated Norton and Malwarebytes. I also used UBCD4WIN Boot CD to regain access to the system which corrupted all of the user accounts (userinit.exe)I re-installed and booted the machine in safe mode and after quite a bit of work was able to log in as administrator While there I ran a few reg. c
leanup programs and created a new user with admin rights from Control Panel. My old personal log-in profile (also with administrator rights) still doesn't work. I also can not access these user's files in docs. & sett. while logged on as administrator. I know that they are there ( a lot of docs.) because I can see them when the AV software is scanning the folder(s).Is there a way to retreive these files?

I'm wondering if it's safe to do that. I would guess that individual documents wouldn't be infected. I wouldn't want to infect my new computer. Afterwards, I plan to reformat the drive and re-install the operating system. The infected machine is an older one, so I may use it for simple word processing or older games or give it away. I know that reformating won't destroy old files beyond recovery but I'd hope it would take care of any viruses. I don't have any personal economic info on it since I haven't used a program like Quicken or Money.
I know the machine has at least one virus (about.com) and may have others since many of the programs that should take care of this stopped working after I installed Windows Service Pack 2. I gather others had similar problems after doing the same. Perhaps the most annoying is that I can't access the icons on the bottom of the screen. That includes files you minimize.

My operating system is Window 2000.Last Friday my laptop was infected with UnSpyPC, a Quicklink toolbar and 6 large icons. Thanks to HiJackThis and Spyware removal programs etc I think I have gotten rid of the problematic crap. However now I seem to have ended up with a few corrupt Folders/Files.Whenever I try to run a Norton Antivirus scan or any number of Spyware removal programs such as Spybot, Spysweeper, Ewido, Ad-Aware etc they all get stuck or crash on one particular general data Folder. Explorer.exe also crashes and generally freezes the whole system when trying to access or search this folder

computer has become infected with a virus. What i was going to do was reinstall XP and just start over. My mom had some word documents that she wanted to keep backed up. My question was if it would be safe to put these word files on a flash drive, or even connect my flash drive, and then put those files on the new installation. i also had nod 32 installed. should i scan the files with that before? and should i boot it in safe mode before doing the transfer?

Due to lapse of sense at a particular moment on my part, my DELL Inspiron laptop was not protected when accessing the internet for a download. Windows XP is the operating system. When booting up, error message states that the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file. I've tried numerous programs and software packages that "guarantee" results but none have accomplished anything except wasting my time and money.

My PC recently got a fairly nasty virus (W32-Sinowal-based Maximus! or something along those lines) so we had to get it wiped. A few days later, my computer was all messed up again. I can only boot up in Safe Mode, my sound doesn't work, and it is running slower than normal. I need to find out if I have another virus (although the guy who fixed it downloaded Norton Anti-Virus and it seemed fine for a few days) or if maybe my computer is just dying. It's about three years old and apparently it was outdated before we even bought it. Is there any way the virus could have affected the computer's hard drive or whatever (yeah, I don't quite know what I'm talking about) or have I maybe gotten another virus?
