View 10 RepliesI have a new Dell StudioXPS 9000 with Windows 7. The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. Those that were already on the desktop when I received the computer and those that are created by new software when installed on the computer have no problem remaining on the desktop. I never had the happen with WinXP.

This includes but not limited to favorites, desktop, as well as a third party email client that allows me to store favicons. In total there must be a few hundred shortcut icons.The problem is the icons are not displaying, the only way i can get them to display is by revisiting each site and creating a new shortcut and deleting the old link and placing the new link it its place. This is happening both on desktop and in all files on the directory, no old shortcut icons are showing, they all just default to the standard ie icon.I cant possibly do this with hundreds of icons, i would loose my mind lol.First can you explain the issue and why this is happening, is there a difference between the two formats?Second, is there a better and faster way to fix this without having to revisit each url and create a new shortcut.

When I highlight areas of the desktop by dragging the mouse over it it gets rid of the black. Also I've noticed as I type this my text is is being entered way after I type it in like one letter at a time very slowly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that's been driving me nuts for a few years.I have a desktop and netbook that are both running 64-bit Windows 7. Each computer has a 'Games' folder that I keep my installed games shortcuts in. I like to turn up the icon size to around the 'large icons' option in the folder bar, making the icons larger than the standard 64x64. I like how the large icons look and it's pretty handy to have larger icons on my netbook's 11.6" screen.The problem is that Windows seems unable to keep all the shortcuts locked in at the same size. It doesn't matter if I'm using a custom icon that's 256x256 or using the game's base shortcut icon that scales larger than 64x64 -- Windows will undoubtedly shrink some icons to 64x64 the next time I open the folder.What's really annoying is that it's completely random what icons it resizes. There will be days where a certain icon is 64x64 and then suddenly it scales back up to 256x256.How can I lock my icons to a certain size and not have Windows decide to mess with them? I've tried rebooting, reassigning new icons, changing a shortcut's name (this will sometimes take care of the problem until I reboot), and saving my Windows theme. i was going to check my email, Thunderbird is set to automatically update on start if there are any updates.So it started updating and all off a sudden all shortcut icon images disappeared! At the time i was to tired to fix the problem but as soon as i woke up today i have done nothing but trying to fix it. The only thing i have changed with my icons are the icon images. But that was for 8 months ago and i have never had any problems with it.This is what the taskbar should look like. This is what it looks like now. Also all other shortcuts in my computer have had their images changed to "this".... The only icons in the taskbar that are not affected are the ones that are not shortcuts, but exe files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a document that has acquired a .lnk extension and shows a Shortcut type file and I cannot open.I was suggested to go to Sart > Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protrocol with a program > Set Assocations I did that and chose Word to open the document. The result was that almost all programs including IE and Systems Tool tried to open with Word.I had to run a System Restore from the Control Panel and all is fine now. However, can someone give me an idea how the document got the .lnk extension and Shortcut type? Also, is there a solution to this being that the above didn't work?I still cannot open the document and the program associated with .lnk reverted to unknown application.

However, I found I could search for them on the home button and still find them, so I moved them back to their normal places and powered off. The next time I powered on, some of the icons had disappeared again, and a few files I had moved had broken shortcuts (when you click on it, it says this shortcut has been move or changed, would like to delete?). I can still search for the files and the documents they contain, but cannot access them. I have tried a system restore, but it as I figured it would did nothing.

I have some files which were internet shortcuts, for some reason they are now "Website" files. I cannot open the website from them.

Since I installed Windows and all those HP apps (some of them apparently required to access BIOS) I got this shortcut on desktop and I cannot remove it. Deleting it manually does not work and the shortcut does not appear in User/Desktop or Public/Desktop folders. Right clicking it does not show the usual menu but this so I cannot get the location of the file. Also, the Remove Icon option does nothing not even in Safe Mode. How to get rid of this? Some suggested to reinstall the app however this also does not work.

Suddenly of icons on taskbar and start (I really mean all) are now looking like an Windows Media Player file. How do I remove it?
I keep losing the icons in Explorer, even with a fresh install of Windows 7. It takes some time, but sooner or later they disappear. It's always Internet Explorer first (associated with .mht files) and now I've lost Chrome (associated with .htm).
Rebuilding the Windows 7 icon cache has not worked in the past.
My pictures file shows only ICONS...Want it to display thumbnails...nothing I have done works
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got this folder. In this folder are 643 sub-folders. I want to change the icon of all of those folders quickly, because doing it manually would be horrible.
Each folder has to have it's own icon. Not all the same one.
Currently the .ico's are in a folder with all the exact same name as the folders they need to be matched with. (if I sort by name, they'll all be in the exact same order, if that helps anything)
example: Mainfolder/A/ needs to have icon "A.ico"
So I've been kinda searching around and it seems things like this can (or not) be done with a batch file, and the desktop.ini. Or something..
