Jun 6, 2012I am using a Gateway Desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate edition. Now my desktop icons are not working. When i restart it works at the start and lateron it does not.

Shortcut Icons On Desktop Not Working - No Longer Able To Access Gmail
Feb 17, 2011I think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
Windows 7 Desktop Shortcut Icons Keep Disappearing?
Jan 4, 2010I have a new Dell StudioXPS 9000 with Windows 7. The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. Those that were already on the desktop when I received the computer and those that are created by new software when installed on the computer have no problem remaining on the desktop. I never had the happen with WinXP.

A friend appears to have had a similar problem see his comments to me below... I have not been asked for money but to the wording above win/2004/08 a "fix" has been suggested by what looks like a Microsoft copy site. I have downloaded the "fix" but am concerned if I use it I may have greater problems.
"I lost my laptop with the " Security Shield " virus caught from roaming the web. This places 'Windows look-alike' shields over the top of every 'Desktop' icon, and clicking on it anywhere directs you to a website asking for money to remove it. You cannot access anything UNLESS you are set up with additional 'Users', when you can boot into one of them O.K.
This virus continually changes its name, and that is why the anti-virus programs cannot find it, and neither can anyone else for that matter. I had to change my hard drive and laboriously re-install everything which has taken weeks - I did have some backup so that helped. I would like to be able to access the old hard drive but dare not - even connecting up to format it would be a risk."
Desktop Icons & Right Click Not Working?
Apr 30, 2012I did a clean install of Win 7 32bit last week and I am facing this issue once in a while. The desktop icons can't be used I can't click or select any icon, also right click of the mouse doesn't work. I can right click on the taskbar or in windows explorer but not on the desktop. Even show desktop icon doesn't work when the above happens. There is no specific time when this happens or it doesn't happen after running a particular program so I can't figure out what is the reason for this random fault.

This includes but not limited to favorites, desktop, as well as a third party email client that allows me to store favicons. In total there must be a few hundred shortcut icons.The problem is the icons are not displaying, the only way i can get them to display is by revisiting each site and creating a new shortcut and deleting the old link and placing the new link it its place. Aug 13, 2011I have a problem that's been driving me nuts for a few years.I have a desktop and netbook that are both running 64-bit Windows 7. Each computer has a 'Games' folder that I keep my installed games shortcuts in. I like to turn up the icon size to around the 'large icons' option in the folder bar, making the icons larger than the standard 64x64. I like how the large icons look and it's pretty handy to have larger icons on my netbook's 11.6" screen.The problem is that Windows seems unable to keep all the shortcuts locked in at the same size. It doesn't matter if I'm using a custom icon that's 256x256 or using the game's base shortcut icon that scales larger than 64x64 -- Windows will undoubtedly shrink some icons to 64x64 the next time I open the folder.What's really annoying is that it's completely random what icons it resizes. There will be days where a certain icon is 64x64 and then suddenly it scales back up to 256x256.How can I lock my icons to a certain size and not have Windows decide to mess with them? I've tried rebooting, reassigning new icons, changing a shortcut's name (this will sometimes take care of the problem until I reboot), and saving my Windows theme. Dec 26, 2012i was going to check my email, Thunderbird is set to automatically update on start if there are any updates.So it started updating and all off a sudden all shortcut icon images disappeared! At the time i was to tired to fix the problem but as soon as i woke up today i have done nothing but trying to fix it. The only thing i have changed with my icons are the icon images. But that was for 8 months ago and i have never had any problems with it.This is what the taskbar should look like. This is what it looks like now. Also all other shortcuts in my computer have had their images changed to "this".... The only icons in the taskbar that are not affected are the ones that are not shortcuts, but exe files.

Jan 5, 2013Some of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.
