I have Dell computer with Windows 7. I went to start it up, I have no login. I goes straight to my desktop. It has no start up or icons, just blank picture. What can I do?
View 1 RepliesI recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows on my hard drive and now I have a strange issue. I have align to grid selected (as I did before) and now I cant put icons in the lower row. Whenever I try they always move up about an inch from the taskbar.
Is there a way to change the size of the grid or something? I would like to do this without third party software, as it worked fine before.

I do not know if this is what is causing the issue, as it was causing invisible icons to be pinned to my start menu.Anyways, my current problem is, when I choose to display my desktop toolbar on the task bar, the toolbar displays my current desktop shortcuts, the sub folders you see when you view the window (ie, libraries, homegroup, network, computer, control panel, user folder, recycle bin) and icons that are not displayed elsewhere, such as a second control panel.What could be the problem and how would I stop the sub folders and second control panel from displaying?I have tried to remove the icons from the desktop folder, but they do not have an option to be removed. A friend appears to have had a similar problem see his comments to me below... I have not been asked for money but to the wording above win/2004/08 a "fix" has been suggested by what looks like a Microsoft copy site. I have downloaded the "fix" but am concerned if I use it I may have greater problems.
"I lost my laptop with the " Security Shield " virus caught from roaming the web. This places 'Windows look-alike' shields over the top of every 'Desktop' icon, and clicking on it anywhere directs you to a website asking for money to remove it. You cannot access anything UNLESS you are set up with additional 'Users', when you can boot into one of them O.K.
This virus continually changes its name, and that is why the anti-virus programs cannot find it, and neither can anyone else for that matter. I had to change my hard drive and laboriously re-install everything which has taken weeks - I did have some backup so that helped. I would like to be able to access the old hard drive but dare not - even connecting up to format it would be a risk."
I did a clean install of Win 7 32bit last week and I am facing this issue once in a while. The desktop icons can't be used I can't click or select any icon, also right click of the mouse doesn't work. I can right click on the taskbar or in windows explorer but not on the desktop. Even show desktop icon doesn't work when the above happens. There is no specific time when this happens or it doesn't happen after running a particular program so I can't figure out what is the reason for this random fault.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOn a new start or reboot the mouse works on the desktop icons for a few minutes and then stops working; ie, it doesn't highlight or open any desktop icons.
I have tried a different mouse and the issue remains, so it is a software or system problem. I have windows 7 64 bit on an HP desktop with loads of hard drive and memory.
I un-click the show desktop icons in view and they hide but they return when I reboot.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???

I was wondering if anyone knew of a resolution for this. It is for another computer and so i don't have immediate access to the specs but i can post them at a later time if it is deemed necessary. I just wanted to get the ball rolling at least for now

Okay, I am at my wits end. I have tried to repair. I rebuilt the icon Cache, and used the registry fix that was available here on the forum and nothing is working. Here is a screen shot to show what is wrong:
All application files(.exe) are the same. I don't know what else to try.
All my desktop and start icons have changed to paint icons on my other laptop. When I click on any of them they try to open in paint program.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I go to open a tab in Firefox, close a program, highlight my task bar, click anywhere, windows won't register it and I cant do anything. Like other people, the temporary fix is it hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and the problem goes away, but it always comes back.I recently installed Sw:ToR and I think there seems to be a connection, for this problem hasnt happened to me before, only after I started playing this game. In The Old Republic, sometimes the UI will bug out and whenever I go to highlight a skill or a quickslot button, I was forced to reload the UI by hitting Ctrl+U twice. That would fix the problem in the game. That exact problem that is in this game has somehow made its way onto how my PC works. I can be clicking and highlighting things just fine, but for some reason, it just won't be able to highlight anything that is pinned to my task bar or even click anything there.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6) just fine recently, and through half of yesterday. I did what I normally do when I leave a friends house...I shut it down correctly using the shut down option at the start menu, then pack it into my laptop bag (has a padded sleeve it fits into) and came home. Later that evening I tried to boot it up like normal. For some reason the wireless card takes forever to load and connect, so I typically turn it on and leave it there while I do something else. When I came back the PC said it was locked, which it never usually locks, especially after only 10 minutes. I unlocked the PC and it had my options for monitors (monitor only, expanded, monitor and tv, etc). I selected the PC monitor only and tried to load things like normal. Loaded a few programs and went to send an IM and the keyboard seemed to be stuck on the g or 8 key and wouldn't allow me to stop the input unless I clicked on the desktop. I could not click back in and delete it. Attempts to do so made the screen lock and give me the monitor options again.
At this point I figured it had to be virus/malware related so I tried to reboot into safe mode with networking. I got the options to come up but it was like the up arrow was stuck and wouldn't allow me to manually control and select an option. Had to hard reboot with the power key to try again. This time it would not move at all. I have two pc's and both have tTamviewer so I opened it on both and was able to remote in and do some scans. Spybot found a few things as well as Malwarebytes and I selected remove selected. Rebooted and still having the same issue. Tried scanning using my Avast Internet Security 7 scan and let it run overnight with Malwarebytes again. Malwarebytes brought back a PUP.funmoods (which I have uninstalled in add/remove programs and, while annoying it's showing up, don't believe to be the case because that was uninstalled months ago) and I had a huge list of files in Avast that said they could not be scanned. I have tried using system restore. I do notice when Windows boots up, it shows an empty command prompt box that eventually disappears and then a second one comes up later that says:
"AMD accelerated video transcoding device initialized Copyright (c) 2012 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. All rights Reserved."
I did recently update my graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650) to the latest driver. I have tried rolling back the driver and still no option. I entered the command in the command prompt to run check disk at next boot but it does not run or give an error. It just seems to skip it and go straight to Windows. A friend thought it was simply the input items on my PC giving it issues because the problem wasn't happening through Teamviewer on my Dell PC, however, that started exhibiting similar problems but not on the same scale.
