Jun 25, 2011I recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows on my hard drive and now I have a strange issue. I have align to grid selected (as I did before) and now I cant put icons in the lower row. Whenever I try they always move up about an inch from the taskbar.
Is there a way to change the size of the grid or something? I would like to do this without third party software, as it worked fine before.

Jul 1, 2011I recently reinstalled Windows 7 and I copied my old appdata folder. I do not know if this is what is causing the issue, as it was causing invisible icons to be pinned to my start menu.Anyways, my current problem is, when I choose to display my desktop toolbar on the task bar, the toolbar displays my current desktop shortcuts, the sub folders you see when you view the window (ie, libraries, homegroup, network, computer, control panel, user folder, recycle bin) and icons that are not displayed elsewhere, such as a second control panel.What could be the problem and how would I stop the sub folders and second control panel from displaying?I have tried to remove the icons from the desktop folder, but they do not have an option to be removed. I have tried deleting them from the task bar toolbar itself, but it acts as if it deleted it, but they do not go away

Oct 6, 2011I just upgraded to windows 7 (on a new laptop). In XP there were two icons which indicated whether I was connected to a wireless network or to a cable modem. I could easily go from one another which is important to me as I use my laptop at my home/office with the cable modem and travel with it and use wireless.These icons aren't on my new laptop which has windows 7. So its not as direct to switch from one to the other.how to make this process easier? (currently I went to the control panel - network connections - enable wireless - too many steps)

Nov 7, 2010I decided to disable Avast Antivirus a week a go and start using Microsoft Security Essentials instead. That's when the problems started (which might be just correlation, not causation).
a) When I try to run an .exe file from Total Commander, I get "Error executing program".
b) When I try to run an .exe file from FreeCommander, I get "Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."
I tried to change all internet settings to "Lowest security" (tried all - intranet, internet...) but problem remained.
c) StartSearch (which I usually use to run applications that don't have icons among the frequently used) doesn't find anything. For example, I type in "Photoshop" and all it finds are blank icons named "Programs" "Documents" "Control Panel" and "Pictures".
I tried fixing the file associations in registry (changing HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTexefileDefault to "%1" %*) but nothing changed. The only way I can run .exe files now is to locate them in Start Menu, locate them using Windows Explorer or via command line.
d) Windows Gadgets stopped being displayed properly.
I have no other clues what might be preventing .exe files from working properly.

Jan 8, 2013I'm having a bit of trouble with a desktop icon that is displaying incorrectly.Basically when the shortcut is placed on the desktop, the shortcut icon is displaying a different icon that what it should, however, if I then drag the shortcut into say, a folder, the shortcut icon is then correct.I have tried:
Deleting the Thumbs.db
Deleting the Icon Cache & Restarting
Re-installing the Software
This is only apparent on one of my windows 7 machines, on the other three machines I have the problem does not occur.

Aug 2, 2011Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.Have 7 standard users created in the User Accounts. Only 5 user icons displaying on welcome screen. All 7 users are required to and do have passwords set.Creating a new user does not add that new user to the welcome screen.Deleting a user does not move one of the other users onto the welcome screen..it reduced the number of user icons to 4.All users have valid User directories and if I force the login prompt instead of icons, they can login successfully.This happened about a week ago and may be the result of some software my son installed. Not sure.There is not an "Other User.." icon...just 5 valid user icons with 2 missing.

Jan 5, 2013Some of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

Apr 24, 2012I wasn't sure what sub category to put this under because I'm not sure where the problem actually lies Windows boots but almost every time it does I get to a blank screen with just my desktop background. No Icons or anything. I am not even allowed to bring up the task manager because ctrl+Alt+Delete will not work.
The only thing I am able to do is right click because the mouse still works which gives me the typical functions of right clicking on the desktop. No other programs or services will work other than that.
I have a Dell XPS 8300 that IS registered and it is practically out of the box. This issue has been occurring since I purchased the computer three weeks ago. The issue was happening before and after all the critical updates so I am assuming their is no built in fix yet.
I have browsed a lot of other similar topics about icons disappearing, however I cannot interact with my desktop at all. If their is a quick fix link or something I should do please let me know.
If you need any additional information please let me know, this is my first time on these forums so I'm not exactly sure what is required.
Desktop Will Not Shutdown Properly After Using Sleep Mode
Jul 28, 2012recently, i've noticed that whenever i sleep my computer, attempting to shut it down later does not work. the process just hangs at the Windows 7 screen with the Shutting down...message. i've let it run for 30 minutes one time and nothing happened, still Shutting down... every time this has happened, i end up manually powering off. the computer shows no ill effects on start up (other than the 'your computer shut down improperly' message). i can't find any unusual events in event viewer, either. it shuts down fine when not having used sleep mode. to sum it up: when i power on my computer normally and DO NOT use sleep mode at all between a shut down, everything is fine. when i power on my computer normally and DO use sleep mode at some point between the shutdown, the computer will typically HANG at the shut down screen and not actually shut down. however, what makes this tough to trouble shoot is that sleeping it for 5 or 10 minutes will have no effect on shutting down...but sleeping it overnight (7-8 hours) will. this problem has been occurring for about 3 months now, though i only started noticing the trend recently. i typically shut my computer off during the week and sleep it through Friday and Saturday and then shut it down again on Sunday (now, i shut it down all the time of course). the computer is virus and malware free according to MSE and Mbam. the only thing i can think of that i installed in between now and 2 months ago were various Steam games and graphics drivers updates. my HDD has never given me any trouble, memory is fine, CPU isn't overheating, etc, etc. my specs are Windows 7 (legit copy before anyone asks), 8gb RAM, 2500k, AMD 6950, Samsung Spinpoint 1TB (regular HDD, no SSD).

Nov 28, 2012For the last few days, i have had a rather frustrating problem with my system. It doesnt want to POST. Let me explain this; Turning the computer on is a mystery. The initial startup seems pretty standard, except that there is no beep, Fans run at 100%speed for a few seconds, and nothing appears on the screen. If i then turn it off via the ON/OFF button, and start the system anew, it will first turn on for a second, then go off again. Waiting 4-5 seconds, the System "magically" starts itself up, with the same symptoms as mentined before.This all has happened after a recent LAN party, where a power shortage apparently may have been the sinner. Just mentioning, i am writing this using that system, as it can still BOOT using a few primitive measures. Removing the source of power to the computer ( by first removing the power cable, and then turning off the outlet before re-inserting it ) and consecutively turning it on, it will 50% of the time POST and start up as usual.
One thing to note also, is that recently, every time i have / have been opted to save a file on my local hard drive, the system has made a loud BEEPing noise similar to the one coming at the strtup.
Unwanted Desktop Icons - How To Get Them Off The Desktop
Nov 1, 2012I recently upgraded a Win-XP home system to Win-7 Home Premium. Everything went fine. But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.
