i have try to rebuilt my iconcache .. but can't able to do
I just upgraded to windows 7 (on a new laptop). In XP there were two icons which indicated whether I was connected to a wireless network or to a cable modem. I could easily go from one another which is important to me as I use my laptop at my home/office with the cable modem and travel with it and use wireless. These icons aren't on my new laptop which has windows 7. So its not as direct to switch from one to the other.how to make this process easier? (currently I went to the control panel - network connections - enable wireless - too many steps)

A friend appears to have had a similar problem see his comments to me below... I have not been asked for money but to the wording above win/2004/08 a "fix" has been suggested by what looks like a Microsoft copy site. I have downloaded the "fix" but am concerned if I use it I may have greater problems.
"I lost my laptop with the " Security Shield " virus caught from roaming the web. This places 'Windows look-alike' shields over the top of every 'Desktop' icon, and clicking on it anywhere directs you to a website asking for money to remove it. You cannot access anything UNLESS you are set up with additional 'Users', when you can boot into one of them O.K.
This virus continually changes its name, and that is why the anti-virus programs cannot find it, and neither can anyone else for that matter. I had to change my hard drive and laboriously re-install everything which has taken weeks - I did have some backup so that helped. I would like to be able to access the old hard drive but dare not - even connecting up to format it would be a risk."
I did a clean install of Win 7 32bit last week and I am facing this issue once in a while. The desktop icons can't be used I can't click or select any icon, also right click of the mouse doesn't work. I can right click on the taskbar or in windows explorer but not on the desktop. Even show desktop icon doesn't work when the above happens. There is no specific time when this happens or it doesn't happen after running a particular program so I can't figure out what is the reason for this random fault.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn a new start or reboot the mouse works on the desktop icons for a few minutes and then stops working; ie, it doesn't highlight or open any desktop icons.
I have tried a different mouse and the issue remains, so it is a software or system problem. I have windows 7 64 bit on an HP desktop with loads of hard drive and memory.
I un-click the show desktop icons in view and they hide but they return when I reboot.

It's like my computer doesn't even realize that the devices and drivers are malfunctioning, also i don't know if it is related but it seems like files, apps and folders are constantly being deleted without my consent and no one else has access to my pc. i suspect foul play hidden in my system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
I was modding Morrowind and I added one too many which broke it, so I uninstalled it, thinking i could just re-install it. But then it didnt work, so i used uniblue registry booster to clean my system registry, and after that no music or sound (apart from the UAC bloop sound) worked.
What do I do guys? should I just format my drive and reinstall Windows? i could move all my important stuff to my mac
so i was connected my bass amplifier (from headphone output) to the line in and i recorded the sound with soundbooth. when i played it back it was kind of skipping so i changed the quality to a higher hz and i recorded and it sounded right. when i went to move my amplifier a bit, because cables were all over the place, strange noises started comming out of the speaker. i unplugged the amplifier and restarted the computer and the sound and the realtek icon were gone . so i reinstalled the drivers and the icon was back, but the computer wasnt detecting when i plugged in my speakers or headphones. so i dugg deeper and checked my BIOS and everything was ok. i then went and uninstalled every driver related to sound with device manager and driver sweeper and reinstalled everything in safe mode. i even tried windows recovery and it still didnt work.i'm wondering now do i have to buy a soundcard or is there something else i can try?there aren't any yellow triangles in device manager and the realtek hd audio says that the device is working properly. View 3 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not able to access my applications on my Windows 7 Home Premium OS PC. I wanted to view my task manager to see if anything look weird or out of place. With the task manager running, I attempted to access Internet Explorer. iexplorer.exe appears in the task manager / process tab with a *32 suffix. It gives me the impression that it's attempting to load, than terminates. Now, imagine this headache for all applications. Nothing will load... None of the startupapplications either [Making Virus Scans & new anti virus installs, impossible].Everything I attempt to load, appears in the process tab of the task manager w/ a *32 suffix then quits. I'd like to try a restore, but I don't have the windows 7 dvd-rom.Before I pay to have it restored, I wonder if there's a way to have this crisis removed myself.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop. In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded a Win-XP home system to Win-7 Home Premium. Everything went fine. But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFinally I have found the place where my problem might get solved.Thing is: 1.There is a big "X" on 3 out of 4 disks I got(except "C" disk) as shown in the picture below: 2.Desktop icons are changed as well but not all of them. This is the second time this kind of crap happens to me. Last time it happened was after I clicked system backup. I couldn't stand the problem so I reinstalled my windows 7 pro 32bit and at first it was all ok. It came back after I rebooted which I couldn't figure out why. The only diffrence is last time all the desktop icons were changed, but this time as you can see some of the icons aren't changed.
