I have a client who suddenly got a red X to appear on her desktop icons instead of the shortcut symbol. Everything seems to work fine. I would assume if I went and deleted the shortcut symbols, the Xs would go away as well.

The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. Those that were already on the desktop when I received the computer and those that are created by new software when installed on the computer have no problem remaining on the desktop. I never had the happen with WinXP.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running windows 7 basic on an acer netbook and every time I log on I get a desktop that is covered in black except for the application shortcut icons. When I highlight areas of the desktop by dragging the mouse over it it gets rid of the black. Also I've noticed as I type this my text is is being entered way after I type it in like one letter at a time very slowly.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
I provide support for several computers at one location. I have arranged the icons to make it easy for users to find them. It seems that someone (probably a kid) who rearranges them almost everyday by selecting 'auto arrange icons'. Is there any way to lock them in place to prevent this from happening?

I have made a set of directories for pictures of various old cars, and have added the car manufacturer's logos to each using Properties > Customize > Choose File. All very nice. But now I have those and other icons popping up all over the place. The Quicktime player icon has been replaced by the on from IconFX, for example. The JDownloader icon has disappeared entirely. I also have an icon on my MP3 folder that refuses to go away even after I click Restore Default. All very odd...

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having some troubles on my PC where a BSOD appears everytime I turn on the computer, just before the icons appear or the start bar, I cannot even get onto safemode to debug this and remove/update drivers etc.I have included the directory MiniDump which I obtained by using a bootable linux CD.There isn't much else I can say as it started happening quite suddenly.I have run SeaTools and MemCheck and neither of these brought up any errors.

Every now and then the window freezes so i can move the mouse but I cannot click on any icons. I've tried running system checks I can. yesterday I ran Advanced System Care 4 and fixed all registry errors, removed malware etc but the problem still occurs. I need to switch the computer off and reboot.

These duplicates are not copies; what you do to them affects their desktop counterparts. This means I cannot move, rename, or delete them without the desktop files being affected. As I do not use the Sidebar is it possible that Windows is trying to start it causing the delay? If so, how do I disable the autorun registry entries? I have no recall of how or even if I disabled the sidebar from loading.

Each computer has a 'Games' folder that I keep my installed games shortcuts in. I like to turn up the icon size to around the 'large icons' option in the folder bar, making the icons larger than the standard 64x64. I like how the large icons look and it's pretty handy to have larger icons on my netbook's 11.6" screen.The problem is that Windows seems unable to keep all the shortcuts locked in at the same size. It doesn't matter if I'm using a custom icon that's 256x256 or using the game's base shortcut icon that scales larger than 64x64 -- Windows will undoubtedly shrink some icons to 64x64 the next time I open the folder.What's really annoying is that it's completely random what icons it resizes. There will be days where a certain icon is 64x64 and then suddenly it scales back up to 256x256.How can I lock my icons to a certain size and not have Windows decide to mess with them? I've tried rebooting, reassigning new icons, changing a shortcut's name (this will sometimes take care of the problem until I reboot), and saving my Windows theme. i purchased a new computer and i migrated all my XP sp3 icons over to the new machine. This includes but not limited to favorites, desktop, as well as a third party email client that allows me to store favicons. In total there must be a few hundred shortcut icons.The problem is the icons are not displaying, the only way i can get them to display is by revisiting each site and creating a new shortcut and deleting the old link and placing the new link it its place. This is happening both on desktop and in all files on the directory, no old shortcut icons are showing, they all just default to the standard ie icon.I cant possibly do this with hundreds of icons, i would loose my mind lol.First can you explain the issue and why this is happening, is there a difference between the two formats?Second, is there a better and faster way to fix this without having to revisit each url and create a new shortcut.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi was going to check my email, Thunderbird is set to automatically update on start if there are any updates.So it started updating and all off a sudden all shortcut icon images disappeared! At the time i was to tired to fix the problem but as soon as i woke up today i have done nothing but trying to fix it. The only thing i have changed with my icons are the icon images. But that was for 8 months ago and i have never had any problems with it.This is what the taskbar should look like. This is what it looks like now. Also all other shortcuts in my computer have had their images changed to "this".... The only icons in the taskbar that are not affected are the ones that are not shortcuts, but exe files.

But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.
