View 3 RepliesI'm running win7 on an hp phoenix pc with 12 GB RAM, Intel I7-2600 CPU, SSD + 1 TB HDD. I've had the pc for about 6 months, but recently my icons are being shifted all to the left side of the screen. If I rearrange the icons to where I want them, they will all be shifted to the left side of the screen whenever i reboot. I was able to find on google. I also tried HP tech support and they were not able to fix this issue. Has anyone else found a solution to this problem? I've seen lots of others complaining about this matter, but all the proposed solutions seem to relate to unchecking the "align to grid" or "automatically align icons" options under the "view" menu selection on the desktop. None of these options work. Why is this happenning in the first place? The machine was not doing this in the first few months I had it. This only started about a month ago. Previously the icons stayed where i placed them
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have never ending problems with Win 7 Problem: I like to spread out my desktop icons - NOT align to grid! Procedure: right click desktop/view/uncheck align to grid/blablabla well I do it and then it rechecks after refresh immediately by itself and moves icons back to grid which i dont want. I ve tried different things nothing works so far. Also I: right click desktop/personalize/ease of use/change admin settings/CHECK: apply all setting to logon desktop - hit ok etc - The check mark DOES NOT STAY PUT.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo, as the title says, my desktop icons wont stay put. This only just happened 2 days ago, Sunday my icons were where I put them, and not moving on their own.Suddenly Monday they are auto arranged on the left side in no particular order. So, what is causing thisFirst let me say, I have already checked, auto arrange is NOT on. I've also not right clicked my desktop and clicked sort by >.This problem is happening on boot up, I can move an icon to a different spot, reboot and it will be moved back to the left side of my screen. I do have a dual monitor setup, I have a 22" asus monitor hooked up through HDMI to DVI (HDMI end is on the monitor), and then a 40" tv hooked up from HDMI to HDMI. Both monitors are running into a single HIS 6950 2GB model video card. I've had this working fine since last September.
The only coincidence I can think of that may have caused this is my graphic drivers. If my memory serves me correctly I updated from 12.11 to 12.12 for the ATI card Sunday night after it popped up and bugged me and I decided I wasnt lazy enough to have it remind me again a week later. So I went ahead and updated, all worked fine, shut down and booted pc back up the next day (Monday) and sure enough icons moved. either thats the problem or it's a huge coincidence. I'm going to roll the drivers back to the 12.11 version to test this theory but I was curious if anyone else had heard reports of this, or even experienced this problem themselves, and if so was it the same 12.12 drivers I mentioned or something else?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire as well as an HP Compaq Presario (both running Windows 7). Both have had this problem, though the HP only happens every now and then. Now, on the Acer when I save an image/file/folder/etc to the desktop and then decide to delete it, the content is deleted but the icon stays. I have tried rebooting the computer and it does not work. The only way I can get rid of them is to create a new image/document/folder with the same name and then using the "Shredder" to delete them permanently. The shredder however is only temporary, in fact I can only use it 14 more times.

The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. When I highlight areas of the desktop by dragging the mouse over it it gets rid of the black. Also I've noticed as I type this my text is is being entered way after I type it in like one letter at a time very slowly.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
My wife's new PC uses Windows 7 64 bit OS. I use WinXP 32 bit. I have no idea how to create a program shortcut.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

Had trouble with computer in March 2011 and eventually had to ship to HP with extended warranty (which ran out march 2012). They installed new motherboard and RAM. We upgraded fan (there are 2) and took RAM from 2GB to 8GM in May 2011. Has been running great, no problems til this weekend. It will shut off like being unplugged. I can't get it to stay on very long before it does it again. I am getting the sign on screen and the desktop shows up. I can do about 1 minute of operations before it goes out.
Opened up the tower and the fans are running, nothing feels hot.
I believe it has to do with hardware, I am going to try replacing the RAM. Then checking the fans.
When ever I change my background after I restart my computer it turns into a blue solid color. I want my backgrounds to stay because now every time I restart my computer I have to change it. Under the personalization panel it shows I still have a picture seleteced but it just wont show anything into I click a new picture.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that's been driving me nuts for a few years.I have a desktop and netbook that are both running 64-bit Windows 7. Each computer has a 'Games' folder that I keep my installed games shortcuts in. I like to turn up the icon size to around the 'large icons' option in the folder bar, making the icons larger than the standard 64x64. I like how the large icons look and it's pretty handy to have larger icons on my netbook's 11.6" screen. The problem is that Windows seems unable to keep all the shortcuts locked in at the same size. It doesn't matter if I'm using a custom icon that's 256x256 or using the game's base shortcut icon that scales larger than 64x64 -- Windows will undoubtedly shrink some icons to 64x64 the next time I open the folder. What's really annoying is that it's completely random what icons it resizes. There will be days where a certain icon is 64x64 and then suddenly it scales back up to 256x256.How can I lock my icons to a certain size and not have Windows decide to mess with them? I've tried rebooting, reassigning new icons, changing a shortcut's name (this will sometimes take care of the problem until I reboot), and saving my Windows theme. I would think this would be pretty stuff for the OS to handle correctly.[URL]...
