In the 'open with' context menu, I accidentally changed the running program for ALL the icons on my desktop (ie. the tickbox below the 'Other Programs' was checked when i changed the running program for an unknown file). So now, all the icons on my desktop are identical and all of them run using the same program

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to download a trial of adobe photo shop to do my homework and i am on my moms laptop. i went to open the program and a dialog box popped up asking what program i wanted to use to open this file, (i didnt notice the checked box at the time stating it was going to use this option for all files associated with this extension!) and the only available program that was listed was WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER and i needed to use the program so i clicked on it.... wish i wouldnt have. it changed ALL my .exe programs ie; google,firefox,system restore and now anytime i try to run anything the media center comes up!!
I have seen on the web that several other people have done the same exact thing. I was freaking out cause this is not my computer and so i went to accounts and made a new admin desktop, which is what i am on now. i have found involves doing something on the actual desktop that is messed up. but i cannot open any executable files on that desktop ie;command prompt,so i cannot do anything on there.
i know there has to be some way to reverse what i did, i just need someone to walk me through the process so i dont screw the computer up any more than i already have, i am able to open system restore in the new desktop, i but dont think that will have any affect on the change i made let alone have an effect on the other desktop from this desktop. I also went to the place on the desktop to change the default for programs and .exe is not listed.
All my desktop and start icons have changed to paint icons on my other laptop. When I click on any of them they try to open in paint program.

The same thing happens with shortcuts pinned to the taskbar. How can I get the pictures back? The computer ran a system back-up after this happened, but the desktop was already changed. If I restore the original system back-up from the disk will I lose the information I have added to the computer since then?
View 2 Replies View RelatedFinally I have found the place where my problem might get solved.Thing is: 1.There is a big "X" on 3 out of 4 disks I got(except "C" disk) as shown in the picture below: 2.Desktop icons are changed as well but not all of them.This is the second time this kind of crap happens to me. Last time it happened was after I clicked system backup. I couldn't stand the problem so I reinstalled my windows 7 pro 32bit and at first it was all ok. It came back after I rebooted which I couldn't figure out why. The only diffrence is last time all the desktop icons were changed, but this time as you can see some of the icons aren't changed.

I changed the desktop (network, my computer etc) icons back to default but can't manage to change the others. If i go into properties for the program and change it that way it doesn't do anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

My laptop is Acer with Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. It contain only 1 single partition disk that is c drive only.Recently, i accidentally convert the c drive which contain OS into dynamic disk.After i restart the laptop, it shows the following: BootMgr is missing Please press Alt, Ctrl +del to restart Now, i not able to enter the window. I am so worry because my important data is kept inside the hard disk, and i still not yet do any back up copy on it.I searching on this forum and learnt that i need a window 7 installation disk to repair it, but my problem is the computer dealer not give me any windows 7 installation disk when i baught this laptop as their said all the driver and windows program already kept in side the harddisk.I tried to remove the laptop hardisk which is a 500GB toshiba SATA hardisk. Then, i use the other laptop with Windows XP professional with the intention to copy yhe file inside the toshiba hard disk.However, after plugged in the hard disk to the other laptop, under the disk management, it shows that the toshiba disk as : dynamic disk, unreadable.i having problem to backup the data inside the toshiba hard disk.....

I tried searching on this forum for similar issues, most of them have been corrected by changing shell icon folder from regedit. I can locate that on my system.
this problem is of friend's of mine. he has windows 7 on a new laptop. yesterday, he received a media file from a friend and after opening it, all his desktop and start-menu icons turned into media player. he can't open his files because media player starts to work. we tried to uninstall but then his desktop and start menu are just blank. he can't access system restore and safe mode doesn't help. how can he fix it without reinstalling his windows?.
