Item Icons Stay On Desktop Even After Being Deleted Or Moved?
Mar 7, 2012
I have an Acer Aspire as well as an HP Compaq Presario (both running Windows 7). Both have had this problem, though the HP only happens every now and then. Now, on the Acer when I save an image/file/folder/etc to the desktop and then decide to delete it, the content is deleted but the icon stays. I have tried rebooting the computer and it does not work. The only way I can get rid of them is to create a new image/document/folder with the same name and then using the "Shredder" to delete them permanently. The shredder however is only temporary, in fact I can only use it 14 more times.
I tried to download a PDF but something went wrong during the download and I ended up with a file icon on my desktop without any extension and having 0 bytes. When I try and delete this file icon I get the error message: "Could not find item. This is no longer located in C:UsersMynameDesktop. Verify the item's location and try again". This seems like a contradiction - Windows is showing a file icon on the desktop but then says there is no file there! I have tried searching for a file by that name elsewhere and there is nothing. I have also tried cleaning the reg and doing a disk cleanup. How to delete this useless file icon from my desktop?
I'm running win7 on an hp phoenix pc with 12 GB RAM, Intel I7-2600 CPU, SSD + 1 TB HDD. I've had the pc for about 6 months, but recently my icons are being shifted all to the left side of the screen. If I rearrange the icons to where I want them, they will all be shifted to the left side of the screen whenever i reboot. I was able to find on google. I also tried HP tech support and they were not able to fix this issue. Has anyone else found a solution to this problem? I've seen lots of others complaining about this matter, but all the proposed solutions seem to relate to unchecking the "align to grid" or "automatically align icons" options under the "view" menu selection on the desktop. None of these options work. Why is this happenning in the first place? The machine was not doing this in the first few months I had it. This only started about a month ago. Previously the icons stayed where i placed them
I have never ending problems with Win 7 Problem: I like to spread out my desktop icons - NOT align to grid! Procedure: right click desktop/view/uncheck align to grid/blablabla well I do it and then it rechecks after refresh immediately by itself and moves icons back to grid which i dont want. I ve tried different things nothing works so far. Also I: right click desktop/personalize/ease of use/change admin settings/CHECK: apply all setting to logon desktop - hit ok etc - The check mark DOES NOT STAY PUT.
So, as the title says, my desktop icons wont stay put. This only just happened 2 days ago, Sunday my icons were where I put them, and not moving on their own.Suddenly Monday they are auto arranged on the left side in no particular order. So, what is causing thisFirst let me say, I have already checked, auto arrange is NOT on. I've also not right clicked my desktop and clicked sort by >.This problem is happening on boot up, I can move an icon to a different spot, reboot and it will be moved back to the left side of my screen. I do have a dual monitor setup, I have a 22" asus monitor hooked up through HDMI to DVI (HDMI end is on the monitor), and then a 40" tv hooked up from HDMI to HDMI. Both monitors are running into a single HIS 6950 2GB model video card. I've had this working fine since last September.
The only coincidence I can think of that may have caused this is my graphic drivers. If my memory serves me correctly I updated from 12.11 to 12.12 for the ATI card Sunday night after it popped up and bugged me and I decided I wasnt lazy enough to have it remind me again a week later. So I went ahead and updated, all worked fine, shut down and booted pc back up the next day (Monday) and sure enough icons moved. either thats the problem or it's a huge coincidence. I'm going to roll the drivers back to the 12.11 version to test this theory but I was curious if anyone else had heard reports of this, or even experienced this problem themselves, and if so was it the same 12.12 drivers I mentioned or something else?
How do I get my icons to stay on desktop after logging in -i keep getting Script Error message /says Do u want to continue running scripts on this page?
I have numerous desktop icons (shortcuts, recycle bin, my documents folder) that I cannot delete. These icons are duplicates of the normal active icons that are either on my desktop or in the taskbar. The "unusable" icons aren't even recognized as being icons (so that if I right click on the desktop and select view and uncheck "show desktop icons", these icons remain). The icons cannot be selected (either right or left clicked), they cannot be moved, they do not highlight when moused over. Any suggestions on how to remove these? I've tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting several times, etc. They do not show up in the desktop folder within c:\users\<your user name>\desktop folder or the public desktop folder either.
This morning I was arranging my desktop files and folders. As I clicked the command to sort by item type, suddenly I had duplicates of every file and folder as listed on my desktop. I even had two icons for the recycle bin! I started moving one of each of the duplicated files and folders into one of the duplicated recycle bins.
I rearranged the files and folders. I then emptied one of the recycle bins. I then clicked on the desktop to rearrange the files and folders. Suddenly almost everything else on my desktop disappeared! There were many files and folder on the desktop that are now gone, there are only 7 files and folders left. Is there any way I can recover these missing files and folders.
I have a problem that just started about 2 weeks ago. I upload lots of photos to the web for my job. Once I complete a job I move each folder with the photos into it to a different folder. This keeps my active photo folder clean. About 2 weeks ago I tried to move my completed folders and I got a "folder is in use by another program" error and it would not move.
Eventually after a restart I moved it. Now I have the problem of these already moved and even deleted folders still showing up in their original location. They only show up when browsing my computer to select the files for upload. They do not show up when exploring my computer for the files. I would imaging it is some type of registry problem but I have no idea how to fix it. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
I had to do a system restore to a prior point (two days ago) to fix a problem on a windows 7 dell PC. It worked but it moved all of my files and user profile to my C drive. I no longer see my user account when I go to start computer. I did find my files (at least some of them) under the c drive in C/OS/Users. Is there a way to automatically get them all back where they orginally were rather than attempt to manually move them and hope I'm placing them in the correct area? I also seem to have lost all of my bookmarks and cannot recover them on Firefox - is there any way to get them back?

Hard to describe in a short title.I have been having a few strange problems here and there with the system. Not sure if it's Malware or if I've just done something wrong.Basically whenever I move a file the icon for the file remains in place and whenever I try to move the icon Windows recognizes that it isn't there even though the icon remains, exiting and re-entering the folder which contains the icon makes it go away. Similarly whenever I empty or fill the recycling bin the icon doesn't change it's appearance until I navigate away from the desktop.I've also been having other issues.
Recently with items pinned to my Quickbar, when a window is open and moved off screen the quick-launch shortcut is removed (so that when you hover over the quickbar icon, nothing displays). Normally you can always see the "shortcut" display of any window of that type open.In my opinion this is a great feature which allows me to remove clutter on the taskbar while still keeping the window open. This "feature" isn't working right now (i.e. no matter where the window is, minimized or off screen the "shortcut" display on the quickbar always displays it), and I was wondering if Windows was bugged, or if this is a toggle-able feature.
My widget icons have inexplicaby moved from the right of the screen to abouy 2 inches to the left, thereby obscuring some desktop iicons. How can iget them to "snap" backto where they one belonged (get back-beatles)?
When he came back EVERY file was moved to his desktop. I'm not talking about a few dozen files, or just doc. files. But files connected to programs, sample pics, txt. everything. Hundreds or even thousands of files have been moved onto the desktop, being layered on top. When we move a file to a temporary folder that has been created, others appear.
It sounds like every file had its address changed to be on the desktop. (ie C:UsersNameDesktop).
We are trying to get virus protection up (Norton is on the computer) but obviously the computer is only half working right now.
I don't have a clue how I'd search for the topic. I mistakenly moved my MS Office folder out of the start menu, all programs, and cannot figure out how to put it back in there. I looked around the computer but can't find a place to put it back
User, Computer, Network, and Control Panel are showing up under Desktop in windows explorer. I recently removed the fake system malware virus, which just refused to die. Everything works, but I reall don't want to have to reinstall everytWhat I want to know is how to move all the system folders back where they belong.
I am getting the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." on all of my desktop icons.
I received my new laptop from the administrator at work, it came with a browser and recycle bin on the desktop. I found a work around for removing the recycle bin so that is no prob. However...
When I delete the browser icon it asks for an administrator login (which I have been given) I enter this and the icon is then deleted. However the icon keeps coming back! This seems to happen when I log back on or sometimes just after a few hours.
trying to make some basic changes to the screen personalization but they wont stick. I'm in administrator mode, by the way. Every time I log back in, they revert. In particular, Im trying to change the way a slideshow is displayed. I go to Desktop Background and change Position to Fit. I Save Changes and all seems to be well. I also save the desktop theme under My Themes. But when I log back in it goes back to Stretch. Am I missing some kind of permissions thing? Or do I just not understand how desktop themes get saved?

Had trouble with computer in March 2011 and eventually had to ship to HP with extended warranty (which ran out march 2012). They installed new motherboard and RAM. We upgraded fan (there are 2) and took RAM from 2GB to 8GM in May 2011. Has been running great, no problems til this weekend. It will shut off like being unplugged. I can't get it to stay on very long before it does it again. I am getting the sign on screen and the desktop shows up. I can do about 1 minute of operations before it goes out.
Opened up the tower and the fans are running, nothing feels hot.
I believe it has to do with hardware, I am going to try replacing the RAM. Then checking the fans.
When ever I change my background after I restart my computer it turns into a blue solid color. I want my backgrounds to stay because now every time I restart my computer I have to change it. Under the personalization panel it shows I still have a picture seleteced but it just wont show anything into I click a new picture.
all my icons on desktop and computer have turned to notepad icons... and they open with some text on notepad... looking for a solution to go back to normal settings...
Some of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.
I've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop. In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.
