Deleted Duplicated Icons - All Files And Folders Disappeared From Desktop
Jul 9, 2012
This morning I was arranging my desktop files and folders. As I clicked the command to sort by item type, suddenly I had duplicates of every file and folder as listed on my desktop. I even had two icons for the recycle bin! I started moving one of each of the duplicated files and folders into one of the duplicated recycle bins.
I rearranged the files and folders. I then emptied one of the recycle bins. I then clicked on the desktop to rearrange the files and folders. Suddenly almost everything else on my desktop disappeared! There were many files and folder on the desktop that are now gone, there are only 7 files and folders left. Is there any way I can recover these missing files and folders.
I was attempting to backup my system to an external drive, interrupted it, then all the files I saved on my desktop were gone. I can't find them through the start menu search nor are they in the recycle bin. I tried to restore the system to an earlier save, no dice.
1. are the files gone?
2. what happened?
3. is it a bad idea to save files to the desktop? It looked like that is where windows places my documents by default? Is it dangerous to just create C://documents for a computer with one user?
For some strange reason my icon on the desktop have all disappeared. I can find them when I go to Documents and click on desktop but I can't seem to put them back on the desktop.
I installed Nero Kwik Media successfully and all the desktop icons disappeared. I cannot drag them from the Start menu. I have WIN7.Any suggestions what I should do to get them back? By the way, I uninstalled the program thinking that maybe the desktop icons would come back. Of course, they didn't..
The issue I need assistance with is that my desktop icons (graphics only) have dissapeared. The text remains and if I click on the text I am directed to the programme. I have checked the location of the graphics on the system and they are still there.During this time I have also had intermittent error messages which appear for seconds "Windows Explorer is not working" and then it reloads and I can continue. but still no icons.
This morning I decided to create a new user account. There was only 1 account on the machine, with administrative priveledges. I created a 2nd account and also made it an administrator account. I then logged off the 1st account and into the new account, made a few simple changes to Internet Explorer (Toolbar and Explorer bar options), then logged back into the 1st account. When I did, I noticed half of the icons that were on the desktop were gone. There are spaces now between the ones that are still there (previously had about 30 of them on the desktop all arranged to the left, aligned to grid; now there are about 17 missing). I am using Windows Home 7 Premium, service pack 1.
At some point yesterday all my icons where invisible when looking at the desktop. But when browsing trough it with explorer I can find back to them, or show all stuff at my desktop. But not without doing it trough explorer. The right-click menu still works, and I can change desktop-wall and stuff. Also tried changing back to default theme, and removing My Computer and taking it back. But nothing seems to fix it :S Also tried several reboots, but still no icons show.Tried adding another user, and guess what, he got desktop icons! So there need to be something I have turned off etc.
Installed win7 a few days ago and today when booting up all of my desktop icons are gone. everything is still in the c:/users/%user%desktop folder, but nothing will show up on the actual desktop.
So I just upgraded my home-made vista home premium machine to windows 7 home premium. When I got into windows 7 for the first time, everything was as expected (only a couple of incompatible programs but nbd). My desktops icons were all still there and like I mentioned most of my programs were still running just fine. Then, late at night when I was fooling around with some files (either deleting stuff or trying to update drivers or something) I noticed my desktop refreshed and came back with nearly half the icons it had before. When I searched for those programs that the deleted icons executed, they were still in my computer but some of there icons had been changed to the windows default one, which sorta looks like a page with the top right corner bent in and a little M$ Window opened.
Just finished running Win 7 backup and almost all my dektop icons, recycle bin and folders vanished. I can still see them by going to C:UsersMeraiahDesktop. I am running Win 7 32 bit Home Premium. How to get things back to how they were? I tried restarting the machine, but that didn't work.
Recently my mouse, taskbar and desktop icons have disappeared from my screen. All it shows is the desktop wallpaper. I can boot into safe mode no problem.
I'm using several internal hard drives with my computer, one of which is 1.5Tb in size (on a single partition). On this HD I store a number of multi-media files, which I've sorted/placed in specific "main" folders (Audio files - Picture files - Video files - etc.), and within each of these main folders are a number of other folders where the contents (pictures, etc), are sorted/filed for easier access. This evening I noticed that all the files (several years of pictures), which were within a main folder labeled "Pictures", have disappeared (they were there a few hours before)!! T he main folder was still there, but now shows as being empty, but all the sub-folders and their contents have suddenly disappeared. Everything else on the hard drive is still where it should be.I checked the main recycle bin on C drive, but the files weren't there (there was one photo there which I deleted yesterday. I did a "restore" for it and it left the recycle bin but didn't show up where it came from - the HD where the other pictures have gone missing from - or, as far as I can see, anywhere else).
I also checked the recycle bin on the actual hard drive where this mystery occurred and discovered one "folder" containing almost 5Gb of something - - I can't open it. A check in properties shows this folder to be marked as "hidden" and the box is shaded out, i.e., blocked to prevent being changed. The box immediately above the hidden box (Read-only), isn't checked - but, instead of being blank, it's blue (and if I click it the blue is replaced by a blank box)!!I've read in this forum of some similar experiences - but usually they're program files on C drive that have disappeared and not actual "stored" files on another HD, so I wasn't able to receive any help from them - - except to be comforted in the strong possibility that the files are still there, they've just been hidden by windows (7 Ultimate, 64bit).I also contacted a company (BitMart) who's product (Restorer 2000 Pro), I purchased several years ago. I'm told that my product does not support either W-7 or 64 bit but their newest version does - - however, there's no guarantee that a recovery can be made if the files haven't been deleted from the drive and are only in a hidden state.
I have numerous desktop icons (shortcuts, recycle bin, my documents folder) that I cannot delete. These icons are duplicates of the normal active icons that are either on my desktop or in the taskbar. The "unusable" icons aren't even recognized as being icons (so that if I right click on the desktop and select view and uncheck "show desktop icons", these icons remain). The icons cannot be selected (either right or left clicked), they cannot be moved, they do not highlight when moused over. Any suggestions on how to remove these? I've tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting several times, etc. They do not show up in the desktop folder within c:\users\<your user name>\desktop folder or the public desktop folder either.
Basically, all of the icons on my desktop, as well as my entire taskbar, including the windows icon, have disappeared. It happened about 20 minutes ago, when I forced firefox to close via task manager. After I hit End Process, the icons and my taskbar disappeared. I can't right-click my desktop either. However, my desktop background, as well as the toolbar on the top is still there, and all of my programs as well as explorer are accessible. I've done one cold restart, and nothing changed. I've gone into the control panel, but I couldn't access anything associated to the task bar, and my windows key does not work as well.
I have an Acer Aspire as well as an HP Compaq Presario (both running Windows 7). Both have had this problem, though the HP only happens every now and then. Now, on the Acer when I save an image/file/folder/etc to the desktop and then decide to delete it, the content is deleted but the icon stays. I have tried rebooting the computer and it does not work. The only way I can get rid of them is to create a new image/document/folder with the same name and then using the "Shredder" to delete them permanently. The shredder however is only temporary, in fact I can only use it 14 more times.
I noticed I had two copies of the My Documents folder, one in my user folder where I want it, and the other buried deep in my pictures folder (I think I accidentally dragged and dropped it there once when I was trying to change the order of icons in the navigation pane). I deleted the one in my pictures folder, and both folders disappeared! I closed the screen out, re-opened "my computer," and see both My Documents folders back, but empty.
1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.
2) How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason. The computer has Windows 7 Professional.
When I transfer a file from a folder to a CD, example, after the files have been copied to the CD, as I do not need those files there anymore, I send them to the Trash bin, but somehow they remain on the same folder with 0 bytes.I have tried everything to make the names of those files disappear with no success. Disk Clean Up has failed and other programs as well.I have observed that this particular behaviour happens mainly with .pps files. They remain on my PPS folder but with o bytes. How can I remove them from the folders?
why if i delete a file from desktop the file move to recycle bin but the file still on the desktop! but if i try to delete it again i get an error "the file already deleted"
Is is possible to either delete or hide the "search folders" and "deleted iems" folders that appear in each pst file created?
We use individual pst files to file our emails per current job. But the folders above take up a lot of visual space in the toolbaro it would be preffered to hide or delete them.
We do not use either to "file" emails so the compact now option in the data file managment dialog box does not really apply since I believe this is really a benefit when the file is archived.
I am setting up 2 users on a fresh windows install. I am setting up the desktop in a specific way, with specific icons in specific locations. Once I set up 1 user, can the desktop be duplicated for the 2nd user so that it looks exactly the same, and thus save me the time of re-laying out the desktop for the second user?
I did a search on this and could not find anything. Once in awhile my desktop will have a bunch of random files I deleted a long time ago. I always empty it too. There won't be anything in the recycle bin or on the desktop and then I'll go to look at it after awhile and some other group of files will be there. I have tried the whole "rd /s /q C:$Recycle.bin" on every drive on my computer. Windows is installed on C:. It isn't even the same group of files each time, it is just random files I've deleted over the past 2 months. I noticed a folder for a demo install of InDesign comes up a lot and says it is in use when I try to re-delete it, could Adobe's crap software be breaking it?
Windows 7 64 Ultimate, 12 gigs of ram, I7 processor. Hard drives are at most half full.
Recently I was doing some tweaks with my Windows Media Player library settings and since then my some of my music files are duplicated.I have two two folders in my Music Library folder, 'Sample Songs' & 'Personal Tracks'. In 'Personal Tracks' I have many folders, including 'Downloads' and 'Concert Songs'.My WMP library wasn't showing the tracks from 'Downloads and 'Concert Songs', so I tried adding them. Somehow the songs got added to my WMP library, but the tracks from those two folders got duplicated in my Music Library folder. Now if I delete the duplicated tracks, even the original ones are deleted. I'm pretty sure that they aren't shortcuts as there is no arrow icon below them. Also the size of the Music Library folder is 3.49GB, but the size of the two folders inside it is 3.25GB, which pretty much clears it up that the duplicated songs are occupying lots of space, so they certainly cannot be shortcuts.
Music Library Folder = The directory named as 'Music' under libraries.WMP Library = Songs visible under the 'Music' tab of Windows Media Player?
I use win7. I sometimes find that duplicates of my files and folders are being made without my knowledge. Nothing nefarious, just plain weird. I'm the only one on me puter (home, no network) and I discovered this one day by a search result showing four copies of the same files with the same creation date, but in different places.
i used to save my files on the local disk D then one day i found the exact copies of my files located in the libraries.. i can see the same files on PICTURES, MUSIC, DOCUMENTS folders. all are the same! i tried to delete those files then this was happened.. my original files on local disk D was also deleted. now every time i make changes on D, it also happens on the other said folders.
my hard disk is getting full because of these duplicates
