I am running windows 7 basic on an acer netbook and every time I log on I get a desktop that is covered in black except for the application shortcut icons. When I highlight areas of the desktop by dragging the mouse over it it gets rid of the black. Also I've noticed as I type this my text is is being entered way after I type it in like one letter at a time very slowly.

The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. Those that were already on the desktop when I received the computer and those that are created by new software when installed on the computer have no problem remaining on the desktop. I never had the happen with WinXP.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
I have PDF icons on my desktoip that have all of a suddeen turned black. I also have some that are OK with the regular icon. I have no idea how to solve this problem. I have searched all over for a solution to this problem but indications on how to solve it seems all wrong. Nothing works.The entire icon is black but the PDF logo is displayed in the bottom right corner.

i have been searching this and other forums for hours trying to find the cause/remedy for randomly appearing black boxes instead of desktop icons after boot up. its 50/50 wether normal icons appear or if black boxes appear. the icon texts are always present.
every time i boot in safe mode they appear normally. i use the "small icon" setting, if i change to medium or large icon size i still get the "small icon" sized black box overlayed on the larger icon (half icon half black box).
has anyone come accross this problem or have any advice for me, bearing in mind my computer skills are limited.
After I finished playing COD MW2 last evening, I shut my computer down. This morning upon starting it up, I had 3/4 of my desktop icons covered with black boxes. I have tried system restore, deleting the icon cache and reboot all to no avail. I am running Windows Home Premium in 64bit mode. Also ran a malware scan and cleaned everything it found. I am running Norton Security Suite which works great for catching anything that comes my way.

The only thing on the screen is (happily) the Start button and my gadgets.
No desktop Icons, No taskbar, no wallpaper.
Had this with the Windows 7 driver. Windows update suggested the Nividea drivers which I installed. No help.
Current workaround: Change screen resolution to anything... everything comes back... I don't accept the change in resolution.. all stays on screen.
So just enoying but very curious what could cause this.
after the computer is left for a while and goes to sleep on waking the screen goes black and stays black. If the computer doesnt go to sleep i can log in with no issue. so far my only remedy is to restart the computer and sometime even I need to unplug the power.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi purchased a new computer and i migrated all my XP sp3 icons over to the new machine. This includes but not limited to favorites, desktop, as well as a third party email client that allows me to store favicons. In total there must be a few hundred shortcut icons.The problem is the icons are not displaying, the only way i can get them to display is by revisiting each site and creating a new shortcut and deleting the old link and placing the new link it its place. This is happening both on desktop and in all files on the directory, no old shortcut icons are showing, they all just default to the standard ie icon.I cant possibly do this with hundreds of icons, i would loose my mind lol.First can you explain the issue and why this is happening, is there a difference between the two formats?Second, is there a better and faster way to fix this without having to revisit each url and create a new shortcut.

Works only task manager and cmd. Safe mode starts up properly. I tried to selectively disable the service take off, I checked the correctness of system files (sfc), chkdsk scanned, restored the system state, repairing the system from the installer, but still the same effect. MHDD does not show anything suspicious and logs OTL, which results in the Annex. Issue the command with cmd explorer.exe does not work. When you call the command iexplore or other associated with the control panel everything works. Sometimes this happens with all the icons appear and then disappear, and only remains the sidebar.

On my desktop I have created a credential. the name of my laptop is laptopTo make things simple lets say I put user name abc and password 123. From my laptop I put in abc for user and 123 for password I can connect to the desktop but it says invalid user name or password. I have tried creating different user names and passwords on the desktop fot the laptop. What am I doing wrong? I do not understand why this is so difficult. She was having problems with her computer trying to run programs when her computer desktop was running in basic mode and not in Aero mode. There was 2 accounts on the computer one in Aero and one in basic. When she logon on to the one in Aero everything ran fine. When she logon on to the one in basic her account. Everything she tried to run didn't work or couldn't change or update.
I ask her if she always ran it in basic and she said she had never change the desktop. As soon as we change it back to Aero than everything was fine. I might be wrong but you should be able to run in the basic mode with no problems right. Does Win 7 change all the programs to run in basic mode and do you have to setup those programs to run right in basic mode. Or is this a commom problem with Win 7.
I have a 2 year old DELL laptop that I use mostly for school. Today, when I tried to boot it up, I got past the login screen, and then the computer just does nothing. I get a black screen with a mouse cursor on it. I've looked this up online and have tried the solutions that I have found:
1) Download the fix from PREVX.com - did nothing.
2) Try CTRL+ALT+DEL to get into task manager - did nothing.
3) Boot in Safe Mode (works) and create a new profile - still black screen.
The school semester just started and the school website (I take ALL my classes online) does not work from this desktop (which is an entirely different issue that no one can figure out... not the school tech people, not the DELL people or the Firefox/Microsoft people... no one).
So I'm having a problem with my desktop Icons. The shortcuts are all working but their Icons are not unless I set my desktop to show large icons, which looks ridiculous. I have reset the Icon Cache twice without success.

Each computer has a 'Games' folder that I keep my installed games shortcuts in. I like to turn up the icon size to around the 'large icons' option in the folder bar, making the icons larger than the standard 64x64. I like how the large icons look and it's pretty handy to have larger icons on my netbook's 11.6" screen.The problem is that Windows seems unable to keep all the shortcuts locked in at the same size. It doesn't matter if I'm using a custom icon that's 256x256 or using the game's base shortcut icon that scales larger than 64x64 -- Windows will undoubtedly shrink some icons to 64x64 the next time I open the folder.What's really annoying is that it's completely random what icons it resizes. There will be days where a certain icon is 64x64 and then suddenly it scales back up to 256x256.How can I lock my icons to a certain size and not have Windows decide to mess with them? I've tried rebooting, reassigning new icons, changing a shortcut's name (this will sometimes take care of the problem until I reboot), and saving my Windows theme. About two weeks after purchasing the laptop Windows startup recovery would run every time I turned on the laptop. Just a few days ago the I started getting the BSOD after logging in to the desktop. If I try to start an application immediately after logging in, I won't get a BSOD. If I log in and leave the latptop unattended I get a BSOD.
I am using window 7 home basic 64 bit. When I click on an image and set that image as "desktop background" then it does not effect anything. Even I go to control panel and then background setting and set or change background then also it does not do anything.
