Windows 7 Desktop Shortcut Icons Keep Disappearing?
Jan 4, 2010I have a new Dell StudioXPS 9000 with Windows 7. The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. Those that were already on the desktop when I received the computer and those that are created by new software when installed on the computer have no problem remaining on the desktop. I never had the happen with WinXP.

Feb 17, 2011I think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
Restore The SORT BY For Desktop Icons?
Oct 25, 2012I tried the repair but no effect.My issue is, the SORT BY is gone from the content right click on the Desktop.My Laptop is identical including the OS Home Preminum 64bit and it has the SORT BY but it disappeared from my Desktop. Aug 13, 2011I have a problem that's been driving me nuts for a few years.I have a desktop and netbook that are both running 64-bit Windows 7. Each computer has a 'Games' folder that I keep my installed games shortcuts in. I like to turn up the icon size to around the 'large icons' option in the folder bar, making the icons larger than the standard 64x64. I like how the large icons look and it's pretty handy to have larger icons on my netbook's 11.6" screen.The problem is that Windows seems unable to keep all the shortcuts locked in at the same size. It doesn't matter if I'm using a custom icon that's 256x256 or using the game's base shortcut icon that scales larger than 64x64 -- Windows will undoubtedly shrink some icons to 64x64 the next time I open the folder.What's really annoying is that it's completely random what icons it resizes. There will be days where a certain icon is 64x64 and then suddenly it scales back up to 256x256.How can I lock my icons to a certain size and not have Windows decide to mess with them? I've tried rebooting, reassigning new icons, changing a shortcut's name (this will sometimes take care of the problem until I reboot), and saving my Windows theme. I would think this would be pretty stuff for the OS to handle correctly.[URL]...

XP Shortcut Icons Will Not Display In Windows 7 After Migration?
Jan 31, 2012i purchased a new computer and i migrated all my XP sp3 icons over to the new machine. This includes but not limited to favorites, desktop, as well as a third party email client that allows me to store favicons. In total there must be a few hundred shortcut icons.The problem is the icons are not displaying, the only way i can get them to display is by revisiting each site and creating a new shortcut and deleting the old link and placing the new link it its place. This is happening both on desktop and in all files on the directory, no old shortcut icons are showing, they all just default to the standard ie icon.I cant possibly do this with hundreds of icons, i would loose my mind lol.First can you explain the issue and why this is happening, is there a difference between the two formats?Second, is there a better and faster way to fix this without having to revisit each url and create a new shortcut.

Dec 26, 2012i was going to check my email, Thunderbird is set to automatically update on start if there are any updates.So it started updating and all off a sudden all shortcut icon images disappeared! But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

Mar 19, 2011So here's something weird. On a firends computer, he has a folder on the desktop that appears to be a duplicate of the users folder in the Users folder. It shows it's on the desktop when you open the Computer icon and in your browse window it's there. You can select it and it opens up and it's exactly the same as the user folder of the same name.
If you right click it, you don't reaaqlly get anything. It doesn't have a shortcut display either.If you look at the actual desktop, it's not there. Only in the browse window. I finally got fed up and just deleted it and it started deleting the same files in the user folder so I stopped.I would like to get rid of it but I don't know how
