I'm trying to move a file from my desktop to a folder on my Hard Drive (Internal) but everytime i attempt to do this it says, "Window's Can't Create a Shortcut here, do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?". This have never happened to me before and frankly I'm a little perplexed at why this is happening.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have written a batch file (e.g.aaa.bat) which can take several paramters and runs fine as long as I enter the start command at the command prompt e.gaaaa.bat -start -logIn order to avoid always having to enter manually this command I created a shortcut to this batch file and placed it in the SAME directory and added once the desired parameters. The shortcut properties look like now:Target: D:proj2 est2011aaaa.bat -start -logStart in: D:proj2est2011This works fine as well. Now the problem comes: I want to make these batch file and its shortcut portable.That means users should be abel to copy both files (batch + shortcut) on their computer in an indiviual different directory and be able to start the shortcutted batch file WITHOUT adjustments as well.
BUT this does not work because "Target" and "STarted in" most problably have a different path (e.g. C:evalproj ask23).My first approaches to solve this problems were to omit the path like in:Target: aaaa.bat -start -logStart in: .But this does not help. If I try to apply the settings above for the shortcut I got an error popup:"The name aaa.bat' specified in the target box is not valid"Hmm, how do I specify in the shortcut=SAME DIRECTORY AS CURRENT SHORTCUT FILE otherwise?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to share a folder on my computer (N:TV, where N is an internal hard disk) on my local area network. Two media centers connect to this folder. Until this week, they connected just fine using no username or password. Suddenly, they want to know a password -- and even entering my Windows credentials (my user account being the only one on the machine), access is denied.
I've selected the folder I want to share, and viewed its properties. It's shared with Everyone for reading. I can access the folder by opening \Mycomputer\TV in Explorer.Network discovery is turned off. File and printer sharing is turned on. Password protected sharing is turned off. All three machines are in the same workgroup.
I have two Win 7 64bit computers, one Home Premium the other Professional, and seemingly at random when trying to access one or the other over the network it will ask for a username/password. Sometimes it won't ask for one at all, and I'll be able to see shares without problem, but I can't replicate when this does/doesn't happen. I've read as many threads as I can find on this and other forums, but still no luck.I have no 3rd party firewall and I've disabled Windows Firewall on both computers.I've disabled anti virus software (MSE only) on both computers.In advanced sharing, I've turned password protected sharing off (as well as tried almost every other combination of settings on this page)I've verified that both computers are in the same workgroup, and I am NOT using homegroup sharing.I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers for each network adapter.I've tried disabling IPv6 I've tried looking through the event viewer for any errors.I've tried 3 different routers?
View 4 Replies View Related1. there's a folder in my seagate 1tb goflex external hard disk, which am unable to delete. wen i checked the properties it showed that the space occupied by the folder is 1.5PB!!!! its ridiculous n strange at the same time! if i try to open the folder it says "you need to format disk before you can use it".2. every time i try to copy some files onto/from my hard disk it says "can't read from source file or disk". i have some valuable data worth 700GB on my hard disk and am unable to transfer em onto any other device so i can format my hard disk.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo here's something weird. On a firends computer, he has a folder on the desktop that appears to be a duplicate of the users folder in the Users folder. It shows it's on the desktop when you open the Computer icon and in your browse window it's there. You can select it and it opens up and it's exactly the same as the user folder of the same name.
If you right click it, you don't reaaqlly get anything. It doesn't have a shortcut display either.If you look at the actual desktop, it's not there. Only in the browse window. I will open another question post about what specifically is recommended for backups but for now, I need to find a way to get rid of this file on my 250GB Seagate FreeAgent drive. I suspect it got there from backing up my computer which is NTFS and onto the FreeAgent Drive, which I suspect is FAT32, and now, I can't delete it. I can't move it or rename it or anything. View 0 Replies View RelatedI was thinking of a way to make life easier on a computer, and I came up with a sort of multi-desktop system I would love to have on my computer. I know a bit about registry editing, but not enough to do this since it would probably require creating a small program. With a simple keyboard shortcut (I'm thinking of something like Shift+Windows), the computer would switch the registry value for the Desktop's folder location.The idea would be to have a small program where I can set up a list of locations and give them an order in which they would cycle through.As far as I can understand, just changing the registry value would not change anything until I logoff/restart, which implies that there has to be some sort of task running which refreshes the position? Now is the part where things might just be too complicated to be possible : ideally, it would be nice to have options to change the background image depending on the folder you are in and, if possible, have the name of the folder written somewhere on the screen (to avoid confusion and messyness).Now the coolest way to do this, according to me, would be to cycle through saved themes when you cycle through folders, which would allow to change window colors etc.I know this is something big and probably not easy to create, but the more I think about it, the more I love the idea... It would make life SO much easier and force people ho have ultra-messy desktops to be a bit more organized.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a document that has acquired a .lnk extension and shows a Shortcut type file and I cannot open.I was suggested to go to Sart > Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protrocol with a program > Set Assocations I did that and chose Word to open the document. The result was that almost all programs including IE and Systems Tool tried to open with Word.I had to run a System Restore from the Control Panel and all is fine now. However, can someone give me an idea how the document got the .lnk extension and Shortcut type? Also, is there a solution to this being that the above didn't work?I still cannot open the document and the program associated with .lnk reverted to unknown application.

However, I found I could search for them on the home button and still find them, so I moved them back to their normal places and powered off. The next time I powered on, some of the icons had disappeared again, and a few files I had moved had broken shortcuts (when you click on it, it says this shortcut has been move or changed, would like to delete?). I can still search for the files and the documents they contain, but cannot access them. I have tried a system restore, but it as I figured it would did nothing.

Since I installed Windows and all those HP apps (some of them apparently required to access BIOS) I got this shortcut on desktop and I cannot remove it. Deleting it manually does not work and the shortcut does not appear in User/Desktop or Public/Desktop folders. Right clicking it does not show the usual menu but this so I cannot get the location of the file. Also, the Remove Icon option does nothing not even in Safe Mode. How to get rid of this? Some suggested to reinstall the app however this also does not work.
