All File Icons Changed To Notepad And Cannot Be Opened
Sep 12, 2010I right click a file then click on "open with" then accidentally click notepad. What happen now is, the icons of my other files change to notepad and cannot open. The files now have a file extension of .lnk. My question is how can I restore my file back to its original or default form.

Red "x" On Disk Icons, Desktop Icons Changed?
Mar 12, 2010Finally I have found the place where my problem might get solved.Thing is: 1.There is a big "X" on 3 out of 4 disks I got(except "C" disk) as shown in the picture below: 2.Desktop icons are changed as well but not all of them.This is the second time this kind of crap happens to me. Last time it happened was after I clicked system backup. I couldn't stand the problem so I reinstalled my windows 7 pro 32bit and at first it was all ok. It came back after I rebooted which I couldn't figure out why. The only diffrence is last time all the desktop icons were changed, but this time as you can see some of the icons aren't changed.

Dec 19, 2012I am using windows 7 professional for over a year now, two days ago most of my icons (all microsoft office icons, and some other softwares) have been changed to default. They all function properly, just the icon is changed to default. Its irritating.
I tried searching on this forum for similar issues, most of them have been corrected by changing shell icon folder from regedit. I can locate that on my system.

Jan 7, 2010this problem is of friend's of mine. he has windows 7 on a new laptop. yesterday, he received a media file from a friend and after opening it, all his desktop and start-menu icons turned into media player. he can't open his files because media player starts to work. we tried to uninstall but then his desktop and start menu are just blank. he can't access system restore and safe mode doesn't help. how can he fix it without reinstalling his windows?.

Jun 4, 2010I went to Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type with a program and changed the association to file .BAT to explore.exe.Now, when I click on a bat file with the mouse, the whole desktop starts shaking. I think it goes into a loop.The problem, when I go back to Controlpanel-> Default programs->Associate a file type with a program.The extension .BAT is no longer there! It is gone.And when I examine the file property of some .bat file, there is no option to change what to open it with. Aug 23, 2011I followed the instructions on this page: url...I renamed my hosts file "hosts.orig", downloaded, unzipped, and saved another hosts file from url... named HOSTS in the same place as the original. After that, I couldn't connect to the internet at home or at the library. I tried deleting the "new" hosts file that I downloaded, in order to put things back to how they used to be, but any time I try to do something to the "HOSTS" file I get a pop up saying: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Cryptographic Services.... close the file and try again" which doesn't work. I tried stopping the DNS thing, but that only worked for about 5 minutes. I restarted the computer because it was slowing down, and the DNS thing restarted itself, and the internet disconnected again. I try stopping it, but an error message saying "Windows could not stop the DNS client service on local computer. error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
