Windows 7 Startup - SMART Status Bad / Backup And Replace
Feb 12, 2013
I have a desktop PC with 2 x 1 GB discs which has a startup problem. When I start the PC up I get a screen Saying SMART status bad, Backup and Replace. Press F1 to run setup. When I do this, I get the ASUS EFI BIOS UTILITY screen giving various options. Pressing the "Boot Menu" button gives me 6 options. Pressing the SATA ST option results in the message "A disc read error occurred press CTRL + ALT + del to restart" on a black screen. I have a Windows 7 repair disc, but how do I get the PC to default to it when the DVD drive is not an option on the "Boot Menu". I have a Windows backup on an external drive.

Today, this morning, I did a system image restore, just to test if it works.
The system image was included in the backup of yesterday, 11/5/2009.
The image restore went smooth, Windows 7 is correctly restored and is running like it always did.
One thing I do not understand, the status of the backup is The last backup was canceled, and also the size of the backup is Not available
I hope someone can explain why this is?

I have a Acer Laptop with windows 7 premium 64bit installed on it. Recently, when I start the laptop, it shows the error message: Smart Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: WD5000BEVT-22A0RT0-(S1)
Warning: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. Press F1 to continue.
After pressing F1, windows failed to boot and it stuck at black screen there. I decided to format the laptop.ok,this time my windows booted smoothly. But the problem is,the same warning came out once I start the laptop. After pressing F1, every thing works fine. This laptop is still under warranty period.

Last night, i noticed i had low memory on my C drive. so I uninstalled a few programs - games mostly and needless addons - and then restarted. After restarting, the laptop got stuck at the bootup screen, at about 70%, then persisted to say "operating system not found" repeatedly.
This morning, after turning it on, it now gets past this screen, but says theres a "SMART failure predicted" on on my Hard drive. It also says ahard drive fail;ure is imminent. It does this for a few minutes, and then gets 'stuck' again at 70% at startup.
So.. is this a problem with my HDD? Everything points to this, but I'm not sure of my next step? Do i need to reinstall windows (problem, seeing as i don't have an installation disc)

Recently my Acer PC has had the Blue Screen of Death. Now when I boot the pc it goes straight into Startup Repair. The first time it did this it did not find a solution but I was able to go to a backup and when it restarted I was able to successfully load. I then started transferring files to my usb. As I was transferring a lot of my files, I can't remember if I got another BLOF or it just restarted but ever since then it just boots straight into Startup Repair, which cannot find a solution, but I have used my backups already so I don't have any more backups to go to.[CODE]

I am trying to start the Cobian Backup software when Windows 7 boots. I have tried two methods: putting a shortcut in the startup menu, and creating a task in the task scheduler.Putting a shortcut in the startup menu caused the UAC controls to activate every time the program was executed. Creating a task to run the software at boot did not work either I think because despite the fact that I selected to run with the highest authorization, it would not execute.I selected the option to run whether or not the user was logged in. I think this was the issue. But selecting the other option (to run when the administrator is logged in) required a password. I do not wish to associate a password with my login because I don't want to have to enter it each time I boot the machine.I searched for autologin solutions, but could not get any of the suggestions to work. Can you suggest a way to run Cobian at boot without invoking the UAC (but not necessarily disabling UAC entirely)? Or provide an autologin solution so that I can use the task scheduler?

I have a pc that is setup with a 60 gb SSD for Windows and a 2TB RAID 0 for the rest of the stuff. Last night I decided to partition some of the RAID to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview and see what the fuss was about.I partitioned it just fine, and everything was going smoothly, until I decided to use the windows tool to make my pendrive bootable with the Win8 ISO.In the middle of the process, I was doing something else (unistalling firefox to be more exact) and suddenly a blue screen comes up!Now my PC is stuck on the famous startup recovery loop, and I cant find a way to make it boot.
- Manual CHKDSK
- That tutorial on this forum where you mess around with the prompt wnidow
- restarting 1 billion times
- booting up from the windows DVD and trying to repair the hard drive
And as you can imagine nothing happened and I am still stuck with my har drive being unbootable. Now I cant help thinking that this was due to my pen drive being in the middle of that process in some way, but I have since removed it, burned it and buried in a forest, and still my problem persists.Since I havent found another solution online, I think now that the only way for me to get my PC back running is by reformatting my SSD (while hopefully keeping all my RAID files intact) and reinstalling windows. BBUUUTT!!! I have 100s of hours worth of Skyrim in that drive, and if I loose that I will seriously freak out! While I dont play it a lot anymore, when the expansions come, Dovahkin will rise again! Can I copy my files from my messed up SSD to somewhere else, before formatting it and starting a new life?

I've recently purchased a new Sony Vaio with Windows 7 Professional. Most of my software is dated and needs to run on Virtual XP which is not as virtual as I'd hoped. I hate it so much that I want to switch back to Windows XP Professional (by far the best platform produced) and I know I will lose at least 4gb of usable memory but so be it. Does any know how I get XP installed?

Win7's Windows Explorer has a full-width pane just above the Status Bar that shows some of the details regarding the item that is highlighted in either the Navigation or File Pane. How do I permanently get rid of this pane. I find that it is redundant and occupies precious screen real estate.I've tried the Classic Shell, Folder Options and the Organize->Layout possibilities.

last friday my 596mhz 512k laptop died. But the good news is I have a desktop that died an hour later.spent sat/sun buying and setting up a new ASUS i3 laptop and retrieving my docs from my desktop, critical as I'm in a jobe search (talk about bad timing) but got every thing up and running,Desktop dies in bios and as it was old figured time to rebuild. the MB has been a bit flakey for a while. So I ordered a Gigabyte Z86 MB, an i5 2500K cpu, 16 gig of ram, and a new dvd as the new MB has no IDE. They'll be here today and I'll build it in the next couple days.To be clear I'm keeping the case, PS, 4 HDDs (replaced the old ones 5 months ago) and video a geForce 8800 so still quite decent for my minimal gaming since the HDDs are fine and have a viable win7 64 pro build, do you think the computer will boot? I did make the repair/ restore disks but don't know if they'll work either.in the day I built and worked on these and wondered why folks didn't do their own work, but without the cheater disks and MS / other vendor support disks it can be a pain to do some of this stuff.

Computer: Acer Aspire 5534, AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core L310 1.2 Ghz processor, 4 GB RAM, Win 7 Home Premium SP 1.
Phone model no. not identified, but software version is vx560404.
When the phone is connected to the computer, the usb recognition sound is issued, but the "Found New Hardware" message is not displayed nor is the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.
The phone is displayed in Device Manager (LGE CDMA Composite USB Device), and in the Control Panel item Devices and Printers (as LG Mobile Phone, LG Mobile (Modem) and LG Mobile (Serial)). However, it is not displayed in Windows Explorer (trying to transfer photos from phone to computer).
I tried running the Troubleshooter, and a message was displayed that said a problem (not identified) was fixed. Except it wasn't. Restarting the computer did not solve the problem.
