Using System Image To Replace 750GB Drive With S 500GB Drive?
Sep 17, 2012My 750gb hard disk is failing on a HP laptop that came preloaded with Windows 7 home prem. I have a SMALLER excellent 500gb, 7200 rpm hard disk that I'd like to replace the failing hard disk with. I've read that my Windows 7 System Repair DVD will not restore my recent system image (on NAS) to a smaller partition. The C:partition on the failing drive is well over 600gb but can shrink to 300gb. QUESTION Can I restore a system image from my larger drive "as is". If not, and I shrink my C: partition (contain windows) ay 350GB will I be able to restore the system image to where windows will boot?I have an old copy of (7.0) partition magic that I used to resize partitions on XP machines Can this old 32 bit partition magic safely resize my C: partition. If so, and I create a new system image can I restore it to the new disk?

After pressing F1, windows failed to boot and it stuck at black screen there. I decided to format the laptop.ok,this time my windows booted smoothly. But the problem is,the same warning came out once I start the laptop. After pressing F1, every thing works fine. This laptop is still under warranty period.
Last Windows Image Backup To Install On New Boot Drive
Apr 29, 2012SSD boot drive failed after just 5 weeks. It takes me an entire weekend(at least) to reinstall and reset everything. Not to mention lost saved passwords and some other important data that I did not get backed up which leads me to my question. Can I use my Last Windows Image backup to install on the new boot drive and if so how?

I just.. just finished Windows 7 installation. Now my D drive is failing. Both drives are the same make model and old, in fact they were in an older computer and almost everything in the pc was updated except the harddrives because they are more then sufficient in size.
So maybe I should replace them both. But I don't want to go through the pain of reinstalling. Anyway, I usually have to reinstall due to my husbands email "joke sharing" practice usually gives us a virus about twice a year.
This backup would be very helpful, I just never looked into it until now.
Windows 7 Startup - SMART Status Bad / Backup And Replace
Feb 12, 2013I have a desktop PC with 2 x 1 GB discs which has a startup problem. When I start the PC up I get a screen Saying SMART status bad, Backup and Replace. Press F1 to run setup. When I do this, I get the ASUS EFI BIOS UTILITY screen giving various options. Pressing the "Boot Menu" button gives me 6 options. Pressing the SATA ST option results in the message "A disc read error occurred press CTRL + ALT + del to restart" on a black screen. I have a Windows 7 repair disc, but how do I get the PC to default to it when the DVD drive is not an option on the "Boot Menu". I have a Windows backup on an external drive.

Feb 26, 2012I have 2x160gb intel SSD disks running as RAID0. Recently my motherboard had failed and I replaced it with new one (different model). Couldn't access OS because apparently some RAID data is kept on the motherboard and that was gone, so I decided to use a backup. Booted from windows 7 installation disk and selected backup,
I click on 'repair', get to the 'select a system image backup'. Select 'use the latest available system image (recommended). Click 'next' I get the message 'all disk to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image'. Click Yes. But then got an error saying:
"The system image restore failed. The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)"
Disk is completely empty with only 1 partition (deleted all partitions and reformatted and then created one). Before motherboard problem I had several partitions, but I imagine that restore would recreate them. Why do I get 'disk to small error' when I am restoring on the same disk? RAID configuration problem? Could stripe size be an issue here?

I saved the image on a network shared folder.I then went to the Advanced Recovery Methods in Windows to restore my image...that I just created. It restarts the computer and goes into recovery mode, I point to where the image is located, I entered the network credentials and it give me an error. Windows System Image Backup
Apr 8, 2012I am going to upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview, so before doing so I backed up Windows 7 as a system image to my external hard drive. In doing so, I forgot that a system image includes all the files on the drive, which means it backed up about 700 GB worth of data. That's OK except I already had those files backed up individually, so now my external drive is basically out of space for future use. Instead, what I'd like to do, is do a system image of factory state without having to lose the files already on my drive. Is that possible? I could always go back to factory condition, and save the system image, but then I'd have to re-add all my programs and files after I get the Windows 8 upgrade completed. I'd rather not have to do that unless it's an emergency.

Yet when the backup process begins, it returns an error message saying there isn't enough disk space for the image.This is apparently a bogus message because I have saved other backup images of this PC to that partition in the past. In fact, I just re-formatted that partition to remove an older image of the same PC (same approx. size image) so I could save the fresh image to it. Mar 22, 2012One of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.
Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.
Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....

I recently got a new Lenovo laptop and purchased brand new application software so I could get a clean installation. After 1 month of running both systems and gradually moving material over to the Lenovo, I cleaned the Sony and did a recovery to the original, store bought condition. Now I realize that I failed to move over some pictures. I have a Windows Image of the Sony on an external hard drive. Is there a way I can get the pics from the Windows Image onto the new Lenovo?

Mar 12, 2011I have just currently installed 1 x 2 TB HDD. Installed Windows 7 64 bit on one. After installing all my basic applications I then decided to create a backup on my spare 1TB allocating 50 gig for the image. The image itself is only 35gig but when I click on create image it runs for a little while then displays the following message:
"There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabyte of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)". It seem like the OS does not recognise 1TB hdd

To my surprise, I don't like it unlike many other folks who swear on this software.Acronis creates a backup image in .tib or .zip format whereas Windows 7 Backup and Restore creates system image in an encrypted folder (with all files and folders NOT formatted). In either case, backup image becomes ready for "restore". So why keep Acronis? Well, Acronis can backup custom files and folders unlike Windows 7 default program (and, Windows 7 does it, too), however, Acronis does "Create full path (includes drive letter)" which I simply dislike. Fbackup4 (free license), on the other hand, does not do it but does the job the way I want, i.e., creates files and folders the way they are organized (without including drive letter, and without zipping or making some unusual file format). So for data backup, Fbackup4 is better, IMO. I remember, WinXP creates crazy backup file format like Acronis does.Paragon Migrate OS to SSD SE (I have license for this, too) is special in the sense that it can copy the entire OS drive/partition to a blank drive. Very good for drive upgrade.
