Windows 7 Backup Image Fails?

Oct 15, 2012

I am trying to make a disk image in Win7 to a partition on my USB HDD.The partition is a freshly formatted 116GB. Win7 says the backup image will require up to 45GB. Yet when the backup process begins, it returns an error message saying there isn't enough disk space for the image. This is apparently a bogus message because I have saved other backup images of this PC to that partition in the past. In fact, I just re-formatted that partition to remove an older image of the same PC (same approx. size image) so I could save the fresh image to it. Can anyone tell me why Win7 insists there's not enough room on a clean 116GB partition for a 45GB image?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 connected to a new Seagate external hard drive. The Inspiron has 280GB of which 85 are free. The Seagate has 465GB with 445GB free.Several times I have attempted to back up the Inspiron and so far have been unsuccessful. The message I get is:Your last backup did not complete successfully.Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space, or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400MB of free space and try again.

Image Restore Can't Find Backup Image?

Aug 24, 2009

I need a little help figuring this out. I made a backup image a while back on my network. Now that I want to re-image, I reboot as requested, wait for it to load, and Windows says it can't find my backup, "if it is on a network, close this window , type the network location."Putting in the network location does nothing, I'm just returned to the screen where it would list the backup image if it had found it, but there's nothing there.Thinking perhaps my NAS was the problem I copied the image onto a portable hard drive, but after rebooting into the restore program, Windows 7 doesn't find the USB drive.

Windows 7 Backup Fails Repeatedly

Jan 1, 2013

There's more than one thing wrong with the Windows 7 Backup. First, it has never worked and it fails in every attempt at backing up. Second, MS failed to provide adequate information or diagnostic tools to explain just why it isn't working! It's pitiful. My issue is that even though Windows 7 64-bit Professional "sees" and utilizes my External Western Digital "Elements" 500GB (ntfs) harddrive, Windows 7's Backup utilility fails to find that drive when I backup to it, even though that same dialog SHOWS the external drive! Its error message says something to the effect of: "path not found". And, although I have to wait 40 minutes for it to supposedly be backing up data, it fails! If it cannot find the path, it should say that at the beginning... not 40 minutes later!

My system:

MB: ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 * CPU: Intel Corei5 (2500K) * GPU: Intel Onboard * SOUND: Onboard * CPU COOLER: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo * PSU: Seasonic X650W 80+Gold * RAM:G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB-F3-1600C8D-8GAB * CASE: LIAN LI PC-A70F ATX Full Aluminum Tower OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit * BROWSER: IE9 It won't do a full backup. It won't do an "image" backup. Nothing. I don't know why.

Trying To Restore Acronis Image Fails?

Sep 8, 2011

for backups of my main OS (in my signature) I have acronis TIH create a single image full backup daily to a different drive. Weekly a single image backup is created and saved on a different drive. Because my SSDs are in RAID0, every few weeks I make a system image backup using Acronis (outside of the daily and weekly backups), clean/all the SSDs to put everything back to 0 on the drives, then restore my installation. It makes a significant performance increase for sure. This last go around a week ago, I did the usual but could not restore no matter what I did. I bought the new version of acronis, the plus pack, unplugged all the other drives, etc etc etc that acronis told me to do to try to fix the error I was getting restoring any backups. Finally what I did was take an old backup, transfer it over the network to a different computer, bought acronis TIH again (ridiculous) and was able to clone it to a drive, plug the drive back into my main rig, boot acronis from a USB drive and clone that installation to the SSD raid setup. The only problem was, the backup I was able to use was from 7-10. I'm now trying to convert the images which would not restore to VHD to boot from the bootmgr screen of the currently restored (7-10) installation.Every tutorial I see only deals with creating a new .vhd to install windows to and boot.

[INSTALL] Booting From Restored System Image Fails?

Jan 22, 2011

My Win7 HP x64 PC has two hard drives, each partitioned into two volumes:

My C: and E: drives are each half of a 200GB drive, both NTFS.
My D: and F: drives are each half of a newer, 1TB drive, both NTFS.
My F: drive has around 400GB of 'stuff' that I want to preserve.

I've been trying to migrate the win7 installation from C: to the first partition of the 1TB drive with two different tools (Norton Ghost and the built-in Windows backup utility) and both fail identically. The backup procedure itself appears to work in both cases.Restoring the backup to the first partition of the 1TB drive "works" in so much as I don't get any errors either way.Creating the requisite boot structures also work, as the O/S appears to be bootable. However, when the restored O/S makes it to the login screen, two flaws are evident:

1. The keyboard absolutely does not work.

2. If I log in on an account that doesn't need a keyboard (no password), I see "Loading desktop", then a few seconds "Logging out" and I'm back at the login screen.

If I look at the event viewer logs (booting up with the O/S on the smaller drive), I see numerous events like this:"The AVGIDSAgent service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.""The Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

Windows System Image Backup

Apr 8, 2012

I am going to upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview, so before doing so I backed up Windows 7 as a system image to my external hard drive. In doing so, I forgot that a system image includes all the files on the drive, which means it backed up about 700 GB worth of data. That's OK except I already had those files backed up individually, so now my external drive is basically out of space for future use. Instead, what I'd like to do, is do a system image of factory state without having to lose the files already on my drive. Is that possible? I could always go back to factory condition, and save the system image, but then I'd have to re-add all my programs and files after I get the Windows 8 upgrade completed. I'd rather not have to do that unless it's an emergency.

Windows 7 Setup - File Backup Instead Of Image

Mar 22, 2012

One of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.

Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.

Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....

Backup Fails Due To Task Manager Being Disabled

Aug 8, 2012

I attempted to backup my systems the other day when I recieved an error code. After searching this forum, It was determined that the code made reference to the fact that a necessary service was not running, in this case the Task Scheduler.I have used the Services program (as an administrator) to attempt to restart this service, but in the properties every option in grayed out. I have checked and all dependant services for the Task Scheduler are running normally. I have run the checkdisk utility from the command prompt, and it did fix some corrupted files, but even after that the options are still greyed out.

Backup Fails, Error Code 0x8100019

Ok, I've been researching solutions for issues with windows 7 backup for weeks now and have had no luck. My VSS service is running fine, and everything was backing up fine til a short while ago, and has been failing since. I have been backing up to a network share on my file server.

My roommate has been having the same issue for some time now, however he was attempting to do this with an external hard drive. Same error of 0x8100019. I've tried everything I can think of and I've had no leads thus far. Any pointers on this would be helpful.

Windows Backup Stalls When Creating A System Image?

My laptop has been backing up once a week fine (except for an error about a missing file that is on the target drive, not the backup drive) for months. In the past few days, it has suddenly failed with repeated attempts to backup, it always stalls at 57% while creating a system image. I've tried a clean boot, same results. I'm backing up to a network drive (USB hard drive attached to the router), 274GB free of 458 total, and the total backup size has been pretty small as no heavy data is kept on the computer.
