Windows 7 HD Image Fails
Aug 24, 2012
I tried to create a disk image using the Windows 7 feature. The creation failed with a message that chkdsk /r should be run on the source and destination HDs. Destination HD was error free. Source HD had bad clusters replaced in five files.Second attempt to create a disk image failed with the same message. There are no system symptoms, everything seems to be working as usual.

I am trying to make a disk image in Win7 to a partition on my USB HDD.The partition is a freshly formatted 116GB. Win7 says the backup image will require up to 45GB. Yet when the backup process begins, it returns an error message saying there isn't enough disk space for the image. This is apparently a bogus message because I have saved other backup images of this PC to that partition in the past. In fact, I just re-formatted that partition to remove an older image of the same PC (same approx. size image) so I could save the fresh image to it. Can anyone tell me why Win7 insists there's not enough room on a clean 116GB partition for a 45GB image?

for backups of my main OS (in my signature) I have acronis TIH create a single image full backup daily to a different drive. Weekly a single image backup is created and saved on a different drive. Because my SSDs are in RAID0, every few weeks I make a system image backup using Acronis (outside of the daily and weekly backups), clean/all the SSDs to put everything back to 0 on the drives, then restore my installation. It makes a significant performance increase for sure. This last go around a week ago, I did the usual but could not restore no matter what I did. I bought the new version of acronis, the plus pack, unplugged all the other drives, etc etc etc that acronis told me to do to try to fix the error I was getting restoring any backups. Finally what I did was take an old backup, transfer it over the network to a different computer, bought acronis TIH again (ridiculous) and was able to clone it to a drive, plug the drive back into my main rig, boot acronis from a USB drive and clone that installation to the SSD raid setup. The only problem was, the backup I was able to use was from 7-10. I'm now trying to convert the images which would not restore to VHD to boot from the bootmgr screen of the currently restored (7-10) installation.Every tutorial I see only deals with creating a new .vhd to install windows to and boot.

My Win7 HP x64 PC has two hard drives, each partitioned into two volumes:
My C: and E: drives are each half of a 200GB drive, both NTFS.
My D: and F: drives are each half of a newer, 1TB drive, both NTFS.
My F: drive has around 400GB of 'stuff' that I want to preserve.
I've been trying to migrate the win7 installation from C: to the first partition of the 1TB drive with two different tools (Norton Ghost and the built-in Windows backup utility) and both fail identically. The backup procedure itself appears to work in both cases.Restoring the backup to the first partition of the 1TB drive "works" in so much as I don't get any errors either way.Creating the requisite boot structures also work, as the O/S appears to be bootable. However, when the restored O/S makes it to the login screen, two flaws are evident:
1. The keyboard absolutely does not work.
2. If I log in on an account that doesn't need a keyboard (no password), I see "Loading desktop", then a few seconds "Logging out" and I'm back at the login screen.
If I look at the event viewer logs (booting up with the O/S on the smaller drive), I see numerous events like this:"The AVGIDSAgent service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.""The Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

I want to create a system image on my NTFS formatted portable WesternD HDD. Now It has about 250GB of space left(the portable HDD), and the Laptop PC that i want to create the image of, tells me I need about 199GB for the system image. Then first time I created the image, it gave me a failure message saying I should run a CHKDSK /R and ty again. I ran a CHKDSK /R on the external drive and tried making a system image again, where it got about halfway and gave me the same message. What is going wrong every time?

With either of these two Products, if I create an Image will the Image "include" everything on the Partition? What I'm asking is, in the event I "delete" something from a Partition, and presuming the "deleted" item is not overwritten, will the "deleted" item be part of an Image created AND restorable by Windows or Acronis?

Clean installing Windows 7 x86 is no problem. But
1) upgrading Vista x86 to Windows 7 x86 fails and automatically rolls back to Vista, and
2) attempt to clean install Windows 7 x64 results in BSOD when rebooting to finalize the process.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit The windows system image backed up on my external hard drive (2TB WD USB3) is not showing while restoring the PC from an image.
The only option available is my hard drive partition on which i also had saved a system image. Though windows recommends External hard drive for backing up image when backing up the system.

I need a little help figuring this out. I made a backup image a while back on my network. Now that I want to re-image, I reboot as requested, wait for it to load, and Windows says it can't find my backup, "if it is on a network, close this window , type the network location."Putting in the network location does nothing, I'm just returned to the screen where it would list the backup image if it had found it, but there's nothing there.Thinking perhaps my NAS was the problem I copied the image onto a portable hard drive, but after rebooting into the restore program, Windows 7 doesn't find the USB drive.

I have an intermittent problem with my Windows 7 programme installed on my laptop.
Very occasionally when I boot it will fail to launch stating that certain files cannot be found. I didn't record exact message but it is a system 32 file error.
I am able to reboot as the start launch is there, although it resembles the old 98 start launch, and it starts up again without issue.
I know it is vague but has anyone else experienced this? It affects me say 1 out of every 25 boots.

Using Laplink, PCMover, I migrated all of my files, apps, etc, from my old Dell laptop (windows XP Home Edition) to my new Toshiba Satellite L755-S5169 laptop, running on Windows 7. The transfer went fine, except, every time I try to go online, there is no wireless connection. I have to go through several steps to get on our wireless network, but, it fails again on reload. I cannot get online, yet, my old computer and our other laptop both get on our wireless quickly and easily. I want to put my old laptop away and rely on the new one, but

excess ie9 crashes prompted me to attempt a fix, i uninstalled ie9, updated the ie8 that was left after a restart, had the ie9 downloaded, after updating ie8 fully, tried to reinstall ie9, but installation aborted with Troubleshoot problems when you cannot install Internet Explorer 9 as my only recourse. i tried the fixit wizard, which just deleted adobe flash, but gave the same error message, and on rerunning it, said there were no errors to fix, so now i'm using firefox, ie8?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 connected to a new Seagate external hard drive. The Inspiron has 280GB of which 85 are free. The Seagate has 465GB with 445GB free.Several times I have attempted to back up the Inspiron and so far have been unsuccessful. The message I get is:Your last backup did not complete successfully.Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space, or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400MB of free space and try again.

I recently acquired a used computer and put the hard drive from my old one into the new one and it would freeze and at the Windows boot logo and then BSOD. The previous owner suggested that I get a new hard drive as the motherboard is having issues reading an already formatted hard drive. I decided to recover the bootloader by following these steps: [code] You will need to replace C:\ in the example below with the letter for your boot drive! It's most likely C:, but it could be something else!attrib -h -s C:\boot\BCD..Now it takes me to the Windows Boot Manager and says that winload.exe (0xc0000428) Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.

I'm back with another issue. I'm setting up a PC for recording TV and it needs Windows 7 or Vista as the OS (since they come pre-installed with Media Center). This is the PC.The specs are also included: Shuttle XPC Barebone. It contains 2GB DDR2 ram and a 500GB Seagate HDD.During the windows installation (either Windows 7 or Vista) three things can, happen,-When the disc boots up, the GUI of the installation freezes and hangs. indefinitely.-When windows begins to install and expand the files, the PC will reboot randomly.-During install, the screen will go black with only a few red pixels present.*This happens with both 32/64bit installations.I tried putting in a different video card to see if that was the issue, but no dice. Also, I know this system can run windows vista/7 because my father is using the same exact PC model (SN68SG2) and is running Vista ultimate 32bit just fine.I have already diagnosed the RAM and HDD and they are in working order. For some reason, the only OS that installs without issues is XP. Worse case scenario, I can get XP media center edition, but I'd have to obtain a disc or iso to even test it out.

Running Vista Home Premium X64 and trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium X64. The install fails the installer's compatibility test with the message "The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading.Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. For these items, make the following changes:Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program". Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 ".However, Trend Micro Internet Security was uninstalled from this computer at least a year ago and I can find no evidence of any shreds of it being present - not in the programs list, not in the file system and not in the registry.

I have a valid copy of Windows 7 family pack. I have used for a while. Worked just fine until I recently had a HD failure, replaced HD and cloned it and had to reload Windows 7 from my valid Windows 7 install disk. I have a "confirmed" Genuine logo on my System page and have confirmed with Windows online that the product key is valid.Issues: ~Windows update will not work. No update come in and updates errors out, saying the service is not running, when I check with the Windows Servcies, Windows update IS running ~Windows homegroup networking will not work, even though Windows "sees" the network..it will not join the homegroup with my password ~Today Windows online validation is saying my Product ID has expired? Why...my System page says I have a valid copy with a Windows Logo.~ Again I have a valid "Family Pack" used on only 2 computers, even though I could have a thrid I do not. I reload from the valid install disk. Thats when my problems statred. I use Mcfee firewall. Turning off the firewall seemed NOT to help either.

Ok so about 6 months ago my dad bought an HP p6674y Desktop. Two days ago it failed to boot to windows 7 home premium. I ran the diagnostics that came with the HP's motherboard. It checked everything (CPU, RAM, S.M.A.R.T. status, Hard drive's connection to the motherboard) and everything checked out fine. But after the motherboards boot screen the screen goes black. Nothing, besides a little underscore (_) blinking in the top left of the screen. I really hate windows because there is no way to find out what failed like there is in linux. Does anybody have any ideas? I just ran a Norton scan and all we have is 18 tracking cookies that where deleted. Unless you have a bulletproof plan I really dont want to reboot the desktop. I got it up and running after leaving it without power all night long.

i have a hp pc with vista 64 ultimate. It crashed I believe from malware. The recovery disk suggested this was not the same pc and I'm a crook. I did change hd and a long time ago the MB due to video failure, but I've used recovery since then a couple times. This time I did disconnect the MB battery. HP support was glad to sell me a new one since my $2000 duo core 2 was obsolete. Funny you still can get duo core 2's. With much regret I bought a win 7 os and Wow the pc does work with no real issues. On the outside chance it fails after I activate and I can someway prove this, can win 7 be installed in new pc?

my Windows 7 Ultimate Installation is hanging an "Expanding Files".. But wait, I don't think its a Windows issue. I have read and read some more on how to fix this and have tried (1) to change the SATA ports on the drives, both HD and DVD-ROM (2) to change hard-drives (both new) (3) to switch out 3 different DVD drives to ensure the drive wasn't failing (4) to check the BIOS settings (5) to remove the bios battery and hold down the power button the erase the CMOS Memory (6) to use different OS Discs (7) to use completely different operating systems- Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux, ReactOS (8) to remove memory and swap with memory that I know is good. The ultimate object is to successfully install Windows 7 on this machine; but with all of the above being done and it still hanging on "Expanding Windows Files" and getting stuck to the point that I cannot move my mouse, I am unsure of what to do at this point.

Recently i panned to build my system and put together the following config, all items were brand new....
1. MSI b75 motherboard (one SATA 6GB/s, Three SATA 3GB/s)
2. Intel i3-3220
3. Kingston SSD NowV100 64GB (SATA 6GB/s)
4. Corsain RAM 4GB 1600MHz, single module
5. DVD drive.
6. Cooler Master 550W
Now, during assembling i installed my new SSD on SATA 6GB/s port, DVD drive on SATA 3GB/s port and RAM, processor etc. Then i proceeded with standard Win7 installation through DVD and completed it successfully, installed all the drivers etc, and now my system was up and running. After few days of successful running, i am frequently encountering errors regarding boot failure and when i go to BIOS it does not show/detect my SSD drive and shows only DVD drive. So, i figured out that, as my SSD is not detected, boot process is unable to load windows. But strangely, when i ran my standard check procedures (i.e. i removed my PC off power supply, removed CMOS battery and reconnected all then boot again) then my system booted successfully. Now, the problem is that, my system runs for 4-5 days continuously and then suddenly the same boot failure error occurs my SSD does not show up in BIOS and then i again have to go through the whole process of removing power and clearing CMOS by removing battery and then reboot.
Note: I have checked my SSD firmware... it is up to date.my BIOS is also up to date.
