View 2 RepliesI backup 100GB of data with Windows Backup and over the time where I do all my backups there is like only 30GB of data which changed from those 100GB and also new files were added. Now my external drive is full. When I now delete the very early backup, the first one where the 100GB of data was saved, will it delete then ALL those 100 GB, or will it just delete the previous versions of the files which were modified AFTER that time, which are in this case the 30GB I talked about? Because otherwhise I would then have in the end an uncomplete, messed up backup.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to either move or restart Windows Backup to a new drive. So I'd like to wipe the current Backup off the drive it is currently on. I really don't care that much about saving older recovery points. Is there a way to just switch where the recovery is saved and once a new restore point has been created on the new drive I could just delete the old files on the other drive?

View 0 Replies View RelatedI need a little help figuring this out. I made a backup image a while back on my network. Now that I want to re-image, I reboot as requested, wait for it to load, and Windows says it can't find my backup, "if it is on a network, close this window , type the network location."Putting in the network location does nothing, I'm just returned to the screen where it would list the backup image if it had found it, but there's nothing there.Thinking perhaps my NAS was the problem I copied the image onto a portable hard drive, but after rebooting into the restore program, Windows 7 doesn't find the USB drive.

I have a factory image of Vista on my D; drive that I would like to delete, as I have recently installed Windows 7 on my C; drive.
The problem is when I tried to delete it, I got this message;
I also tried to delete it using cmd, same warning;
Does anyone know why I get these warnings, and how to delete this drive?
I am going to upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview, so before doing so I backed up Windows 7 as a system image to my external hard drive. In doing so, I forgot that a system image includes all the files on the drive, which means it backed up about 700 GB worth of data. That's OK except I already had those files backed up individually, so now my external drive is basically out of space for future use. Instead, what I'd like to do, is do a system image of factory state without having to lose the files already on my drive. Is that possible? I could always go back to factory condition, and save the system image, but then I'd have to re-add all my programs and files after I get the Windows 8 upgrade completed. I'd rather not have to do that unless it's an emergency.

Yet when the backup process begins, it returns an error message saying there isn't enough disk space for the image.This is apparently a bogus message because I have saved other backup images of this PC to that partition in the past. In fact, I just re-formatted that partition to remove an older image of the same PC (same approx. size image) so I could save the fresh image to it. Can anyone tell me why Win7 insists there's not enough room on a clean 116GB partition for a 45GB image?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a SSD for my comp, before installing I did a backup of windows and included the system image option. I am now on a fresh install of windows but can only restore the files I had on my old windows and not the entirety of windows (programs, program settings.. ect). How can I use this image to put everything back exactly the way it was before?
View 8 Replies View RelatedOne of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.
Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.
Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....
I had a Sony laptop that originally had Vista and was upgraded to Windows 7. I recently got a new Lenovo laptop and purchased brand new application software so I could get a clean installation. After 1 month of running both systems and gradually moving material over to the Lenovo, I cleaned the Sony and did a recovery to the original, store bought condition. Now I realize that I failed to move over some pictures. I have a Windows Image of the Sony on an external hard drive. Is there a way I can get the pics from the Windows Image onto the new Lenovo?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has been backing up once a week fine (except for an error about a missing file that is on the target drive, not the backup drive) for months. In the past few days, it has suddenly failed with repeated attempts to backup, it always stalls at 57% while creating a system image. I've tried a clean boot, same results. I'm backing up to a network drive (USB hard drive attached to the router), 274GB free of 458 total, and the total backup size has been pretty small as no heavy data is kept on the computer.

I have a system image on my external HDD made by Windows 7 Backup & Restore utility on my old computer. Now I am using a new machine and would like to delete my old system's system image but do not know how to properly do so.
Since I have not ran a backup yet on my new machine, there is not option for "manage space" in the backup & restore utility
I have just currently installed 1 x 2 TB HDD. Installed Windows 7 64 bit on one. After installing all my basic applications I then decided to create a backup on my spare 1TB allocating 50 gig for the image. The image itself is only 35gig but when I click on create image it runs for a little while then displays the following message:
"There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabyte of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)". It seem like the OS does not recognise 1TB hdd
I am not able to make backup, I get message not enough free space for shadow copy? How do I resolve this? I understand some kind of USN journal is created on System reserved partion. This hidden partition was created when I installed and now I have only 38Mb free out of 100Mb. As I understand this has been an Issue for more than a year, and still Microsoft has not resolved?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have got a license for Acronis True Image Home 2010. To my surprise, I don't like it unlike many other folks who swear on this software.Acronis creates a backup image in .tib or .zip format whereas Windows 7 Backup and Restore creates system image in an encrypted folder (with all files and folders NOT formatted). In either case, backup image becomes ready for "restore". So why keep Acronis? Well, Acronis can backup custom files and folders unlike Windows 7 default program (and, Windows 7 does it, too), however, Acronis does "Create full path (includes drive letter)" which I simply dislike. Fbackup4 (free license), on the other hand, does not do it but does the job the way I want, i.e., creates files and folders the way they are organized (without including drive letter, and without zipping or making some unusual file format). So for data backup, Fbackup4 is better, IMO. I remember, WinXP creates crazy backup file format like Acronis does.Paragon Migrate OS to SSD SE (I have license for this, too) is special in the sense that it can copy the entire OS drive/partition to a blank drive. Very good for drive upgrade.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to create a backup image of a clean install of Windows + certain applications.My plan is this: Format my SSD that I am currently using. Install fresh windows 7, do all the updates, install a few choice applications, and then get an image of it to use for recovery. I have a few questions on this topic as well:
1. This is probably obvious, but I want to make sure; I can store the image wherever I like, correct? If I am using an SSD for my boot drive, I can image that, and store the image on a regular hard drive, right?
2. How big will the image be? Is it going to be as big as the entire drive that I back up? I cannot imagine how it would go any differently, but I am hoping for some unrealized magic.
3. Do I need to buy the Ghost software? If not, does it make imaging a whole lot easier to make it worth the price tag?
4. How arduous and time consuming is the actual recovery process?
p.s. Something I just thought of. I don't know how I would do the actual backup without an OS to interface with so maybe I could make the image contain everything except the basic install of windows to cut down on space and time. Is this feasible?
We are a small office, 5 or 6 computers. Only 3 are every day computers, other 3 are "server", admin and extra computer. The three in use every day are new win7pro x64 machines. Our server is xp pro (32bit) with a shared drive as our "server" drive. We access this for all our job related materials, etc. There is no network setup, just shared folders among our workgroup. we just got the new win7pro machines setup and are using Windows Backup function to create system images to the "server" computer in a shared folder. We've got the images created on 2 computers, and can see the .vhd files and associated folder structure. When testing to see if we could restore from these images, we got the error "Cannot locate backup sets on machine, etc."I moved the backup folder to the root of the drive, and made sure it was WindowsImageBackup or whatever the default is, but still could not find it.

Win 7 and my apps take up 43.9 GB on the hard drive but the SYSTEM IMAGE it created on my external drive is only 23.7 GB. Tried it on my laptop with similar results ISO was about half the HDD. Does that sound right? Just seems the ISO should have matched the HDD GB-wise unless it compresses or something.
I perform an incremental back-up every day using the built-in backup program.
How often would you do a whole system image? I was thinking of only doing that every few months or less. Each image would be 80GB.
I think that's what it's called. anyway something more then just a backup. One that you don't have to reinstall your software to get it into the registry.
Do I need special software? or is there a utility in Windows 7. If not what do I need to buy?
I just.. just finished Windows 7 installation. Now my D drive is failing. Both drives are the same make model and old, in fact they were in an older computer and almost everything in the pc was updated except the harddrives because they are more then sufficient in size.
So maybe I should replace them both. But I don't want to go through the pain of reinstalling. Anyway, I usually have to reinstall due to my husbands email "joke sharing" practice usually gives us a virus about twice a year.
This backup would be very helpful, I just never looked into it until now.

I have a system image that was saved to a maxtor one touch ext HD via USB. This was created using Windows 7 image making system. I am trying to copy the image to my new HDD (internal) 1TB. The problem is when I go to recovery>advanced options>restore from image and reboot, the PC cannot find the image. I can click advanced options and search for a driver and actually see the drive and the image folder/zips but Windows 7 cannot detect it. I have also copied this image to a internall HDD because I thought it may be the USB. I have not changed any BIOS settings as I am using Windows 7 on the 1TB HDD and trying to restore to that from either the Dnetouch or the F:internal HDD. Neither times will it find the image.uestions. Do I need to use an alternate program like paragon or clonezilla2. When the image is saved, it is the name of my pc. Example: Fesktop64-PC. Does it need to be in a folder or the image be a specific name? Ive seen WindowsImageBackup as a possiblity.
