I am not able to make backup, I get message not enough free space for shadow copy? How do I resolve this? I understand some kind of USN journal is created on System reserved partion. This hidden partition was created when I installed and now I have only 38Mb free out of 100Mb. As I understand this has been an Issue for more than a year, and still Microsoft has not resolved?
View 4 RepliesI'm belatedly trying to create my first system recovery backup, on a system which I first installed Windows back in November 2011.I have a 1TB drive with a 214GB partition that I set up for a backup. I manually store all my media and pictures to both a separate partition on the drive, in the cloud, and on a separate external HDD, so all I really want to back up is the system image.This is the newbie sounding question to confirm my suspicions: The system drive I'm trying to back up is definitely bigger than the partition I've set aside for recovery. My C drive is a 473GB partition, and I'm using maybe a bit more than half of that currently. If this is the case, is there a way to reallocate un-used disk space from my other partitions to make the recovery partition larger, or should I be biting the bullet and shelling out for a 500GB external to cover my system recovery needs?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 7 Home premium x64 OS and it has been giving me more and more problems. I've ran virus scan on AVG and Windows security and came up with nothing. I've tried msconfig and disabling all non-windows services from starting and still nothing has worked! Windows Live ID Sign in use to start after I had to manually start it (even though it was set for automatic), and now it won't even start at all, giving me the error it didn't respond in a timely fashion. My windows task manager doesn't respond, and my system restore gives me an error saying "A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error".
The problem seemed to start when my web browser would start to not load pages. Then my printer wouldn't work because the "printer spool" service wouldn't start, then of course the hardware and devices in the control panel wouldn't load. After resolving that by manually starting the bluetooth service, the Task Manager stopped working, and the "printer spool" service failed and would not stay started. My start up speed has seemed to have hit a brick wall as well, I've ran start-up repair to no avail. This is my build as copied from newegg.com:

This computer was quick as can be when I built it, and had had no problem with it whatsoever until now. I can't think of any program that may be messing with it, I've gone through my installed programs and startup programs and nothing to me is out of the ordinary.
I have just currently installed 1 x 2 TB HDD. Installed Windows 7 64 bit on one. After installing all my basic applications I then decided to create a backup on my spare 1TB allocating 50 gig for the image. The image itself is only 35gig but when I click on create image it runs for a little while then displays the following message:
"There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabyte of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)". It seem like the OS does not recognise 1TB hdd
I am making regular backups - both the image backup and the file sets using Windows 7 Backup program. No problems with that.
But, I periodically would like to copy the image backup to a portable drive. I plan to take this portable drive offsite to a secure location - I call it my archive.
Is this possible? What files must I copy? Do I have to maintain a certain directory structure or naming convention in case I have to use the archived copy to restore (assume a bare metal restoration)?
I thought I could just copy the VHD files (boot and system) but the image backup has other directories and files and I just don't understand their purpose.
I need to copy these files rather than running the backup over again to this portable archive device. I have multiple computers and it is impractical for me to physically access each computer to re-run an image backup to the same archive device.
My archive device is a regular USB/eSata HDD and I don't plan to put VSS on it.
I have a drive that was using PGP that has become damaged and will not boot despite trying 3 days of different fixes and repairs. I have a complete drive backup that will restore but when I try and boot after my PGP password I get 'Missing operating system'. Again I have tried decrypting and fixing but to no end.
I have another disk with a working and booting install of Windows 7 (same architecture etc) on. I have the entire contents of the non-booting system disk that I can access from the image of it.
If I booted into something like Windows Recovery or Live Linux environment, can I copy the entire contents of the non-working Windows 7 drive over the working one and expect it to work and then boot?
I cant start Volume Shadow Copy Error is:The system cannot find path specified. Error 3 But I do have VSSVC.exe in my system32 folder I have this in registry under description @%systemroot%system32vssvc.exe,-101 I think that everything is ok, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is running

I did see in another forum that it was related to a system restore backup. If that's the case, does anyone know how I can determine how much space everything will take? Seems strange that it's not telling me the entire space requirement. (If that is the case with the restore image)

when there is more then enough on 3 different drives but i still get the same message. i have 2x 64 bit Windows 7 installs and 1 x 86 Windows 7 all 3 give same error message when i try to create an image.
Everytime I create a Restore Point, I notice that "Generic Volume Shadow copy" is listed in the Action center. Should I be concerned? I don't remember seeing that listing before.I have a done a couple of System Restore points but none of them show up in the action center as "Generic volume shadow copy."
View 2 Replies View RelatedI swear I am hitting every problem possible with this computer!! After much frustration for two days, I have done a clean Win 7 Ultimate install. I am running a SSD/HDD combo. Intel Rapid Storage kept flagging my mechanical drive as faulty (even after I reset it back to normal). I got tired of the message and just turned off the feature... I have been having trouble making a backup image. I REALLY need a backup disk since I had to turn off "System Restore Points" so that it wouldn't bloat my SSD. I noticed that it will successfully go through making a backup of my C drive (the SSD) and when it hits the mechanical drive, the backup will fail and I will get the 0x8078015b error.
Does anyone know how to fix this or what I can do to make a backup without using the Win 7 utility? Is my mechanical drive really faulty?? Is it my external that I am trying to make the backup to being faulty?I saw someone else with this same problem and even after getting all new drives twice, the problem persisted and it never seemed to get resolved... My HDD is a WD Caviar Black 750 GB. I really need this computer up and running ASAP and as I have purchased the mech.
I have 2x160gb intel SSD disks running as RAID0. Recently my motherboard had failed and I replaced it with new one (different model). Couldn't access OS because apparently some RAID data is kept on the motherboard and that was gone, so I decided to use a backup. Booted from windows 7 installation disk and selected backup,
I click on 'repair', get to the 'select a system image backup'. Select 'use the latest available system image (recommended). Click 'next' I get the message 'all disk to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image'. Click Yes. But then got an error saying:
"The system image restore failed. The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)"
Disk is completely empty with only 1 partition (deleted all partitions and reformatted and then created one). Before motherboard problem I had several partitions, but I imagine that restore would recreate them. Why do I get 'disk to small error' when I am restoring on the same disk? RAID configuration problem? Could stripe size be an issue here?

I created an image using the Microsoft Backup and Restore tool in Windows 7. I saved the image on a network shared folder.I then went to the Advanced Recovery Methods in Windows to restore my image...that I just created. It restarts the computer and goes into recovery mode, I point to where the image is located, I entered the network credentials and it give me an error. "The Specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037)"
View 5 Replies View RelatedSome time ago I installed WinCleaner on my pc (which I had been successfully using for the previous decade on various machines) and obviously managed to damage/delete some key registry entries, as when I try to access various functions as an administrator (most notably trying to open Services) I get a message:C:Windowssystem32services.mscWindows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.I've also lost the option to change start menu/control panel etc to Classic View - the option just isn't there any more.So I tried to do a System Restore but there are no restore points and when I try to create one I get another message:The restore point could not be created for the following reason:A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Now that I want to re-image, I reboot as requested, wait for it to load, and Windows says it can't find my backup, "if it is on a network, close this window , type the network location."Putting in the network location does nothing, I'm just returned to the screen where it would list the backup image if it had found it, but there's nothing there.Thinking perhaps my NAS was the problem I copied the image onto a portable hard drive, but after rebooting into the restore program, Windows 7 doesn't find the USB drive.

I just allocated more space to my system restore to ensure that when i back up files/docs there will be sufficient space. But does the allocated space for system restore affect at all how much space is allocated for backup? If not, i will would like to turn back down the allocated space for the restore.

Is there a quicker way to copy image? MS instructions is causing my dvd drive errors when I'm copying image to cd disk. MS istructions are giving you two ways to copy your HD image. Both sets of options are showing media too small error and when I go and check if anything is showing copied image nothing is on that disk. I'm using cd-r 700 mb disks from Best Buy.

The imaging process is stopped with a message that I don't have enough spaces on the targeted disk while I got more than I need.
- Is it a good manner to create an image on a network disk? If not how should I do it.
I am going to upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview, so before doing so I backed up Windows 7 as a system image to my external hard drive. In doing so, I forgot that a system image includes all the files on the drive, which means it backed up about 700 GB worth of data. That's OK except I already had those files backed up individually, so now my external drive is basically out of space for future use. Instead, what I'd like to do, is do a system image of factory state without having to lose the files already on my drive. Is that possible? I could always go back to factory condition, and save the system image, but then I'd have to re-add all my programs and files after I get the Windows 8 upgrade completed. I'd rather not have to do that unless it's an emergency.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to make a disk image in Win7 to a partition on my USB HDD.The partition is a freshly formatted 116GB. Win7 says the backup image will require up to 45GB. Yet when the backup process begins, it returns an error message saying there isn't enough disk space for the image.This is apparently a bogus message because I have saved other backup images of this PC to that partition in the past. In fact, I just re-formatted that partition to remove an older image of the same PC (same approx. size image) so I could save the fresh image to it. Can anyone tell me why Win7 insists there's not enough room on a clean 116GB partition for a 45GB image?

View 8 Replies View RelatedOne of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.
Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.
Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....
