Backup Error 0x80780048 - Not Enough Space

Nov 9, 2009

The backup tool is complaining about not having enough space for a backup but it wants 18GB and I have over 88GB on my backup target drive.

Anyone else seen this?

I did see in another forum that it was related to a system restore backup. If that's the case, does anyone know how I can determine how much space everything will take? Seems strange that it's not telling me the entire space requirement. (If that is the case with the restore image)

Backup Error 0x80780048

Jun 8, 2009

I have seen a few others with this problem, but never any solutions....

Does anyone know how to fix it?

For those of you that don't know what this is, it is an error you get when trying to back up. The system claims that there is no more room to back up, but in my case the backup is only 70 gigs, and I have over 200gigs free.

Error: 0x80780048

Jun 20, 2009

My RC of Windows 7 Ultimate Complete Backup failed with error 80780048. And Binging (not Googling) revealed this same error occurred in Vista during 2008 as mentioned in other forums on the web. It failed after several hours of backing up to my 500GB USB drive. To start I had 300GB free and only required 168GB for backup.

A couple of years ago, I used Windows Vista Ultimate to create an image backup. Then several months later I had a problem and had to do a restore, That failed. So from then on I used Norton Ghost 12.0. Well I gave Windows 7 Ultimate backup a try and this problem occurred.

Anyone else have a problem with this? Any fixes?

Attempting To Create A Backup System Image / Not Enough Space Error

Mar 18, 2012

I'm belatedly trying to create my first system recovery backup, on a system which I first installed Windows back in November 2011.I have a 1TB drive with a 214GB partition that I set up for a backup. I manually store all my media and pictures to both a separate partition on the drive, in the cloud, and on a separate external HDD, so all I really want to back up is the system image. This is the newbie sounding question to confirm my suspicions: The system drive I'm trying to back up is definitely bigger than the partition I've set aside for recovery. My C drive is a 473GB partition, and I'm using maybe a bit more than half of that currently. If this is the case, is there a way to reallocate un-used disk space from my other partitions to make the recovery partition larger, or should I be biting the bullet and shelling out for a 500GB external to cover my system recovery needs?

Cannot Backup Don't Have Sufficient Space

Sep 11, 2012

I have a Lenovo G580 - It comes with it's own OneKey Recovery system which doesn't work. But neither does Windows 7 recovery. When I try to back it up, it does but then it stops half way and says there is not enough space in the D drive to back-up. So I went into Disk Management and saw that it was limited to 25GB - So I tried to extend the volume but it has been greyed out so I cannot select it. What can I do? I can't back it up or anything! I also had an error message which is the above: 0x80780048

Jul 13, 2012

I would like to backup my files using Backup and Restore by Windows 7 and I was wondering if a 64 gb flash drive would be enough space for a backup? Someone told me that the program compresses the files, i do not know if that is true or not but, If I right click on local disk drive it states that I have used 178gb of 288gb. I would really like to Backup just my music which is about 27gb and some other stuff which is which is about 10gbs and whatever Windows 7 needs to back up. [code]

Windows 7 64bit Image Backup - Not Enough Space On Storage Location

Mar 12, 2011

I have just currently installed 1 x 2 TB HDD. Installed Windows 7 64 bit on one. After installing all my basic applications I then decided to create a backup on my spare 1TB allocating 50 gig for the image. The image itself is only 35gig but when I click on create image it runs for a little while then displays the following message:

"There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabyte of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)". It seem like the OS does not recognise 1TB hdd

Action Center "Check Backup Disk Space" Alert

Jun 3, 2012

My wife has a two month old Lenovo ideapad with Windows 7. We are now getting alerts that the D partition is near full. Is this system taking multipul backups of the harddrive C and storing them all? What are my best options to have a safe backup, but not overloading the D partition? I do see in; Computer>System>Device Manager>Disk Drives>D Drive General tab that there are two options at the bottom.
option one, (not checked in my case) "Compress this drive to save disk space". Option two, (checked) "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" If this system is saving a snapshot of D over and over, it will only be a matter of time when option one will be overcome. SO, I would think that there has to be a setting that will let partition D delete older backups...right?

Would it be a combination of selecting option one and changing a setting that would enable older backups to be automaticaly removed?

Windows Backup "The Backup Failed." Error

Feb 26, 2012

I have a Win7 64-bit system and have been successfully using Windows backup on an approximately monthly basis. I ran it before going to bed last night and woke up to a "The backup failed." when I tried to create a system image of both of my hard discs. The error is "Incorrect function. (0x80070001)". I found a workaround solution at Windows backup or restore errors 0x80070001, 0x81000037, or 0x80070003 and looked up and found a number of "junction points", most rooted at c:UsersDilipAppData - but the problem is that there is no such folder.

Backup Error 0x8078002A

Dec 1, 2009

I upgraded my main computer to Windows 7 Home Premium which has a C drive (500 GB) and a Raid 5 SATA array (2.7 TB) on drive D:. I tried to backup the install as an image on the D: drive and I get the following error code 0x8078002A and a comment about an I/O error and one of the backup files could not be created.

I plugged in a USB external hard drive in and it works.

This computer is part of a gigabit switched home network (the main file server), so I tried to back up one of the home computers (running W7 Professional) through the network onto a shared folder on drive D: and I get the same error. The backup gets 27% of the way through on both computers and then fails.

I have updated the Raid driver (I had to as part of the W7 install).

I tried the reboot trick mentioned in another forum which did not work.

Any ideas or solutions on this one?

Secondly, can I copy through Windows Explorer the backup off the USB drive onto the D: drive and have a reliable backup, or will that copy corrupt the backup?

Getting Error 0x8007042d With Windows 7 Backup?

Dec 4, 2011

When I run Windows Backup to save an image to the D: drive (have not tried other drives) I get 0x8007042d after it has run about 12% of the job.The error says, "Windows Backup Troubleshooting options - Check your backup - The service could not start due to a logon failure - Backup location D: - error code 0x8007042d After formatting D: the Backup function gave me the error when I tried to launch Backup, so at the moment I can't even start the backup. Error says, "Tha backup application could not start due to an internal error: The service did not start due to a logon failure. (0x8007042d)".Checked Volume shadow copy service right after the launch failure and it shows the service is running.I suspect the problem started when I installed or uninstalled Acronis backup software 2011 Home flavor. I removed all the Acronis entries in the registry, ran their fix utility, etc. No help.I also have Carbonite which also makes an image of C: and saves it on the P: drive - paused Carbonite and Windows Backup still gives 0x8007042d.

Carbonite was installed about the time Acronis was uninstalled. Carbonite seems to be working fine.At about the same time...I started noticing Not Responding events with a variety of programs. I have a 16gb ReadyBoost flash drive.

Backup Error Code: 0x81000033

Feb 2, 2011

A couple of weeks ago I did something stupid and lost all my data from my hard drive on my old XP computer. Having now bought a new machine and restored as many files as I can, I have purchased a Seagate Expansion 1TB external drive on which to backup my files (Once bitten, twice shy,)I'm now using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with a 500GB hard drive (not much on it at the moment) but when I tried to do my first backup today using the Windows 7 utility the backup aborted at less than half complete giving me the error message: 0x81000033 "Windows Backup skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes is not having enough free space. Free up some space by deleting unnecessary files and try again."I've searched on the Net and found that this is by no means an isolated problem and probably involves a partition (whatever that means) that is too small. MS want to charge a fee for assistance as my Windows 7 was purchased with the computer. All the other so called 'fixes' are so way over my head that I a) don't understand what they are talking about and b) simply don't have the confidence to try them without an idiot's step-by-step guide in front of me.I know it's a bit long winded but my question is, does anyone know of a SIMPLE way to back up my files or have I just wasted my money on an external drive that I cannot use?
