Semi-random Partial Lock-ups / Slow Downs
Sep 28, 2011
For the longest time I've had this problem where my computer will be on, everything working, then all of a sudden it stops but it doesn't crash.. no blue screen.. and oddly enough it doesn't completely lock up. I try to move the mouse and it may not move instantly, but a few seconds later it will jump and freeze again. It acts as if it goes from normal speed to then processing everything at about .0000001 frames per second, if that makes sense. Upon forcing down the computer, it will restart and hang at the "detecting IDE Drives" part of my Bios boot, then I fully force it down again and it boots up fine. At first it would only do this when I was downloading or installing with my 1.5TB drive installed so, I "uninstalled" it by disconnecting the power and SATA cable and it worked, didn't have any "slow down" or install/download issues after that. Now, I had plugged it back in a few months ago and everything was working fine, downloads were going perfectly fine, installs worked without a hitch, until today I decided to install XNA 4.0. When trying, it did the whole slow down/lock up and required me to restart. Recognizing it, I unplugged the drive again and rebooted. Tried to reinstall, then XNA 4.0 installer kept crashing saying "invalid Drive F:/" which is the drive I unplugged... why it was continuing to look for that drive I have no idea, anyways. I messed around with it a bit I plugged in a USB stick and renamed it to drive F:/, it would start installing but now still do this lock up. Some how after loading my BIOS on a boot and having only my 150GB raptor plugged in (no 1.5 TB, no USB drive) I was able to boot and install XNA 4.0 without errors. However, at the very end it started to lock up and slow down.
Now, whenever I boot my computer it continues to do this lock up, even with the drives I thought were problematic uninstalled. During start up it will make the windows chime and then start to slow down/lock up and act almost as if it's processing the sound in very, very slow motion. It would do this to video as well back when it would crash while I was playing games, until I initially unplugged the 1.5TB drive. Anyways, I am stumped now since it seems to be something completely different than a drive problem and do not know where to go from here. [code]

I had no idea where to put this, so I've chosen General.I've had a major issue lately:
Every short once in a while, only when I open my primary partition Drive C, explorer.exe freezes and the only way out is to close it.I have no idea why this occurs, and can only really tell that this closing also takes an enormous amount of time.

I bought a used HP Pavilion g7 about a month or two ago. I first noticed that I was suffering from a massive slowdown problem that often prevents me from opening programs or even shutting down the computer from a cold startup. My computer is currently running chkdsk from bootup and is finding file segments 58724-58731, 58756-58763 unreadable. My computer is running Windows 7 sp1. This is the second time this has happened; I had reformatted the hard drive once already due to this issue, and it has now started occurring again two weeks later.Considering that all I've only put League of Legends, LackeyCCG, and Google Chrome on my computer, I doubt this is a software issue. I have heard that I may have to replace my HDD if I'm receiving errors such as this in such volume. If this is one of the vagaries of purchasing used computers, how should I act? Do warranties typically cover dead hard drives, and if not how much would it cost to replace mine?

It started yesterday when my wife and I noticed the computer hanging a bit more than normal - even when doing basic things, like clicking "login" to check our email. But, it would always come back and really wasn't all that frequent. This morning I tried to start it up and it got stuck on a black screen after the motherboard POST image. I was able to get into BIOS and boot from the windows CD. A system restore fixed it. I'm just wondering what you guys think was likely to have caused it. Is it likely that my boot files got corrupted somehow? I ran a diagnostic and from Seagate and it says that my hard drive is fine - but I'm not sure if that's just because I recently restored Windows.I did recently install a big name game - but it ran fine for three days before this happened. The system restore point I had was from when I installed it, so it's now gone. What do you guys think could have caused it? I'm just a little concerned that restoring only patched over a problem that will crop up again - or, that I should be afraid to install that game again.PS: System Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 3.0GHz E8400 Intel CPU, 500GB Seagate SATA HDD, 4GB Crucial 800MHz RAM (x2 2GB), ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard. The game that was installed was Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

Alright so a couple months ago my computer crashed and I was told it was a hard drive problem. So I got a new hard drive and installed it myself reinstalling windows and everything else. After a bout a week my computer would randomly shut off the screens image would become jumbled with dark lines running horizontally across and then it would either shut off or give me the BSOD. The BSOD flashes fast so I can't write down any information from it. This has happened repeatedly for about 3 months since every couple days. Usually I leave my laptop alone for about 15 min and then I can start it up again. The problem seems to happen mostly when i watch videos or go on sites with a lot of media going on. I think I've installed all the drivers i need to. I'm hoping it is not a hardware problem because i just bought this hard drive. I never had this problem before when i had the old hard drive. If any one could give me some help that would be awesome. I also ran check disk and it came up with nothing. My laptop is an HP G72 Notebook running windows 7. Hard drive is a western digital 250 gb.

I have had my HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1) for less than a year and I am encountering a ton of problems.Whenever I go to open a program, it unresponds for a short while before I can continue to use it.Sometimes my keyboard acts up, for e.g. if I were to press T whilst in an internet browser, it would open a new tab, as if I was pressing the CTRL button when I'm not.Sometimes my laptop shuts down - sometimes there is a blue screen error message before, other times it just shuts down without one.I have Trend Micro Tiatanium anti-virus protection and have done scans and nothing has showed up.

I have very annoying problem with 7 #7000/#7100 (not present in XP or Vista) - on random intervals, a couple of times per day the hard drive just blocks with it's LED constantly on. Windows still responds, except for operations involving the hard drive (like opening Explorer) - every program that reads from HDD just becomes "Not responding". Exactly after 2 minutes, everything is back to normal.
Drivers are installed, there are no unknown devices in Device manager.

(this is the site apache friends - xampp for windows only happens when I try to download the .zip file 1) and I was looking at my CPU and Memory etc. in CPUz and noticed a odd thing about my Ram the 2 sticks are running at to different frequency and that it isn't in dual channel mode?

My Dell XPS 420 has a problem now and again whereby everything stops working, but I can still move the mouse. If I try to click somewhere it'll say not responding. It locked up again just now, and if you look at the log, the time where the PC locked up was around the time of the error 21/4/12 12:54:32PM.I have no idea what is causing the issue as I'm not high level enough to interpret event logs. All I will say is that I have running on my PC: avast, adaware, malware antibytes and advanced system care pro for maintenance so I keep my PC in good health (or not it seems!)I have run the trial version of active smart (hard drive utility) and no errors are being reported for any of my drives. Check disk etc reports no issues. In the past my Crucial Ballistix memory has failed a couple of times, but those were BSOD errors that I identified and fixed by replacing the memory.

my windows 7 system I use for music production randomly freezes. I was looking in the Computer Management Event Viewer and there are ALOT of MOUCLASS error references and also some windows update failures. Could this be causing the random freezes? Also, the system freezes on boot up and I have to reboot then it works fine for a while, but freezes again intermittently. I dont connect this system to the internet except for windows updates and DAW updates.

The problem is that I will get a system lock up, or freeze when playing games like Portal 2 or FM2012. The freezes are very random however they occur the most when trying to play Co-op in Portal 2 (say about 80% of the time when trying to play it). However with the likes of FM2012 or other games, I can literally play for hours on end without a crash, but other times a crash could happen within about 5 mins.I also seem to randomly crash if I watch a HD video in full screen (1920x1080) however I cannot recall such a problem watching it minimized (using VLC). I also used to get random crashes while browsing the internet on certain websites, however I haven't had this issue since upgrading my RAM.
When the PC does crash, the monitor will just black out and if sound was playing at the time it will usually loop or repeat. The only thing I can do is a hard reboot and upon restarting the PC it will say about the unexpected shut down and to start windows normally however I don't seem to get any minidumps. I've had this problem now for quite awhile, and at first it was something I just overlooked as a random occurance but now its starting to drive me crazy! My system specs are as follows:[CODE]

In the last few days it's gone from taking me maybe a minute to boot to several minutes and even after the computer has fully booted there is random slowdown, but there aren't really any processes using up cpu cycles according to the task manager. I've tried everything from reverting to another save point, defragging, limiting which services and programs start at boot, reinstalling drivers and and various programs without luck. I tried using the windows performance analysis tools to study what was running when during the boot process and it's pretty inconclusive. It runs much better in safe mode. I also run Linux and it does not seem laggy and as I've tested the hard disk and ram I'm lead to believe it's not a hardware issue.

I have recently started experiencing abnormally slow shutdowns (it will go to the windows login screen with the shutting down message and hang there for about ~5 minutes), and random freezes on my PC. The freezes happen from things as small as moving the mouse. I run a weekly virus scan, and have come up with no viruses, though it could be something not detected by my antivirus.
The PC is less then 2 years old.

im running a windows 7 computer with dual video cards to support three monitors as its a work computer, i have 4gb of ram and i have a few work programs on the computer, it was running fine but recently the computer has started to become really slow randomly and the mouse will skip all over the place instead of being a smooth movement. just wondering if you guys have heard of it before. it seems to be when i ask the computer to do something (eg open another program or change from one program to another.) wasnt always like this. also the physical memory use is over 50% even when most stuff is closed. Also it seems slow to boot. but i think this was just the amount of programs opening on boot. ive disabled a few.

My computer is relatively new. It's a little over a year old Dell Vostro with Windows 7. Lately it's gotten extremely slow, restarts randomly and basically doesn't act the way it should. I've done the virus scan (I have Trend Micro). Everything looks alright but the computer is still a bit of a mess.

On Febr. 21st 2012, out of the blue, I could not, and still cannot, scroll by using the scroll wheel on my mouse when I am using the Namo WebEditor software. If I touch the scroll wheel the page scrolls all the way to the top and cannot be stopped. The problem also occurs when I want to select a file from within Namo.Scrolling by using the scroll bar works fine.In all other cases there is no problem whatsoever. The problem is not dependent on the type of mouse.I have a Dell Studio laptop.

Switched on, all lights fans startup, screen shows Post splash screen, But that's as far as it goes, none of the key notifications work, loading OS disk does nothing? Changed keyboard for working USB one.

I assembled a PC a year ago based around the Asus M4A87TDUSB3.0, with it was bundled a Phenon II X6 1090T and 2 x 2 GB fast DDR3. I have a 750W PSU, running a Radeon HD5570. I have a dual boot config, with Windows 7 64bit as default but also XP as other OS because there are some old games I really like that only work in XP (I tried emulation but software rendering isn't up to it). 90% of the time I'm in Windows 7. I've set up the system to that the Windows 7 partition isn't visible to XP, so that my Windows 7 restore points don't get wiped out when I boot into XP.Anyway, to cut a long story short, system has been working well, reliable and without issues for the last 10 months. However, a couple of months ago I decided to install a second drive of the same size but faster. I migrated the entire contents from the old drive to the new faster one without problems. I then reformatted the old drive and made it a dedicated backup drive for Genie Timeline. All worked well.
A couple of weeks later, I decided to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 16GB and used Crucial's system scanner to find suitable upgrade. I took out the old modules, installed the 16GB new ones as a complete kit (with same latencies etc). First boot didn't seem to go well, system hanged before Windows Logo. I rebooted, went into BIOS and set the memory timings to Auto and set up Memory Counter to show on screen. I rebooted and it showed 16GB and it then booted into Windows normally. All fine, I did a Windows system rating and got 7.4's and 7.5's on everything apart from the HDD which comes in at 5.9Problem is, I now randomly get slow boots. It probably happens once in about 5 times, the entire boot sequence will take around 14 minutes whereas normally things are fine after about 3 minutes. I've pared down startup programs in MSconfig to really just the stuff I need to get by, so I know it's not that. If I shut down and restart, the chances are it boots fine again. It's not Windows Updates causing this, I can see those when that happens. I've taken out the memory modules and have cleaned the contacts with Servisol, unplugged and plugged the HDD connections back in. For a few days, the problem seemed to go away but it then came back.
When it's in its slow mode, everything is a bit sluggish, it's almost like I would imagine it would be with a minimum amount of memory or if it was running some heavy process in the background. I also notice when it's like this, that rather than the drive light being solidly on when booting, it's more of a fast flicker, with periods of inactivity lasting a few seconds.I'm not a technical expert, my guess is that it's either the hard drive or the memory. However, I'm also wondering if there is something in the BIOS that I need to do. Also, I've noticed that when shutting down, sometimes it doesn't quite feel like it's shutting down right, by this I mean that usually, in the last second before power off, the chassis fan runs to max as FanXpert hands control of the fans back to BIOS I guess

My current build is shutting down while playing games, and not restarting, and BSODs. I want to try and see if it is a hardware problem that I can fix this paycheck without taking it to the local computer repair shop that will cost an arm and a leg. attached is the error that shows in event viewer after I restarted my pc, and I did some looking and still not sure what I need to do. Do I need a new CPU? trying to not keep throwing money at it, already bought a new GPU and PSU for it, separate reasons. Any help will be awesome!

I downloaded EasyBCD 2.1.2, used it to recognize EVERY boot record, deleted the MBR on the old HDD, and rebooted. Now, the system boots straight to the new HDD without prompt from bootloader (which is good) but still requires the presence of the old HDD (I disconnected it, alas...)In the end: I called and told the customer that "I'd be happy to GHOST all her data and slap a fresh Windows 7 install on the new HDD (with a fresh/whole MBR) and then drop all her data back onto it. However, this would require more time; the other option being that she accepts the machine for what it is, perfectly functional minus the dependency on the old HDD."have considered this option, but I found ZERO indication of the old HDD failing, other than "BAD" written on the drive with Sharpie. The customer was happy yesterday and accepted the current state (she didn't want to invest more time/money into it) but today when she picks it up she isn't happy because she was told four months ago that the drive was bad and now I'm saying I don't see an indication of it. Other than pulling the data, installing fresh OS, then dropping data back on; or not installing OS with two drives present in the first place?

recently got a new laptop a Lenovo Y570. I moved my entire audio collection from my old laptop over and attempted to play songs in iTunes it repeatedly on the majority of songs skips to the next track at a random point throughout the song.this is not the 20 second preview setting in iTunes as it has skipped the same song at 5 seconds or 45 or even 2 mins in. I then tried the songs in Windows Media Player Classic same thing, and again in Windows Media Player 12. However from a few tests QuickTime seems to play songs fine.I updated the Renesas audio driver and tried the CCCP codec pack, then removed it and installed the basic K-Lite codec pack which seems to have fixed the problem for windows media player 12 but the others still dont work. *update tried more songs in WMP12 and it skips some songs midway thru as well.
