Slow Shutdown, And Random Spike Freezes

Sep 18, 2011

I have recently started experiencing abnormally slow shutdowns (it will go to the windows login screen with the shutting down message and hang there for about ~5 minutes), and random freezes on my PC. The freezes happen from things as small as moving the mouse. I run a weekly virus scan, and have come up with no viruses, though it could be something not detected by my antivirus.

The PC is less then 2 years old.

SLOW Boot And Shutdown After Forced Shutdown During Windows 7 Upgrade?

Sep 19, 2012

I have a ASUS Laptop with Intel I3 processer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I recently had a forced shutdown during a Windows upgrade session. Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

Random Freezes, Sometimes Glitchy Freezes And Rarely BSOD

Nov 28, 2012

i have random freezes sometimes they are glitchy and rarely bsod all on bootup or up to about half hour in (which also turns of the mouse). also Internet doesn't autoplay playlists and all sugestions next to the video are black. this started a few weeks to a month ago, first it seemed just a minor annoyance but it started to become more often the last few days. i've tried some checks but without success.
also i remember the week before those crashes that twice the screen driver crashed for a second or 2 and then a message popped up about how a monitor driver crash was adjusted, always when i played a certain game that is still in beta so i taught it was the game.

X64 Windows 7 Random Shutdown?

Aug 2, 2011

I recently bought an Alienware m17x and it keeps shutting down randomly. I tried reinstalling a fresh version of windows just to be sure and reupdating all of the drivers to match my computer's needs. (via windows update and Driver Genius)It never shuts down randomly in safe mode though, so it tells me: (Correct me if I'm wrong)

1) It's not one of the absolutely critical files causing it, since the files/drivers work without shutting down in safe mode

2) It's not an overheating problem since it doesn't shut down randomly in safe mode

3) Probably not a problem with the battery, or else it would shut down in safe mode too. (Right?)

I still have a 1 year warrenty with Alienware/Dell but I'd rather not wait several weeks (send/receive, fix, send back which takes a while b/c shipping takes atleast a week each way) for them to receive it, fix it, and send it back. (I'd prefer to use that as a last resort because I use/need my computer daily)Dell does have a BIOS flasher for Alienware m17x which I have not tried yet?

System info/specs:

-- Alienware M17x R3 Laptop
-- Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
-- Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth Module
-- Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate (Alienware Edition)
-- 12 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (4 DIMMs)

Windows 7 Random Shutdown?

May 6, 2011

[CODE]My computer is randomly shutting down power then restarts on it's own. I have tried to find a common function that might be causing this to happen. But have not found any. At first I thought it was th eIE since the shutdown always occurred while surfing th eInternet. But, I have had it shutdown once not being on th eInternet (maybe 99 to 98% while on the internet). The computer will run for days, weeks and even months before it shows up again. I have replaced the Power supply, the video card with one just like it, and rearranged the memory (3 x 2g) OCZ GoldI have run the memory test with Windows 7 and no problems were found. Where do I go from here? I have never seen the temparature exceed 42 C. The Vcore is 0.94, +3.3v is 3.33, +5 is 5.19, +12v is 12.25, CPU temp 33 C, and MB is 30C as I write this message

Random Shutdown During Game

May 16, 2012

I'm having some compatibility issues with my new gfx card, I think. I'm pretty new at this so I'm having trouble diagnosing it. Card is a Radeon Saphire 6850, found here:[URL]

Problem:System will either freeze (lock up, force a manual shutdown) or automatically restart during gaming. This occurs at odd intervals. Sometimes I will be able to play for hours and it will be fine - other times I will log in and freeze within 10 minutes. Once I freeze one time, I almost always will freeze again in the same spot.I've updated drivers, I've updated windows service packs, I'm fairly sure i've ruled out overheating (comp runs ~50 degrees) THOUGH I am not sure if I can rule out overheating of the gfx card itself - don't know how to check.

Pc Gets Random Shutdown During Gaming

Dec 5, 2011

I have a windows 7 dell pc that I bought last January. My computer has always randomly shut down either when in use or not in use or even if I was using it to send videos to my ps3 to watch on tv. So I called the tech guys at dell to see if there was some kind of issue to be concerned with about my pc restarting, after three separate techs doing tests and what not, my computer boots games up perfectly well, but as soon as I get into the game and start trying to play, the game lags soooooo much that they are no longer playable.

Random BSODs After 5-10min Or On Shutdown?

Dec 18, 2011

By random I mean different BCCodes at a regular time, not the other way around.[CODE]Here's what I've done.- Moved RAM modules. Happens with either or both installed.- Turned off all startup items using Spybot S&D- Disabled hardware drivers not in use.- Memtest, clear; but I now know this isn't worth squat.- Attached the minidump filesAny ideas? Other forum posts seem to indicate memory or IRQ. System screen doesn't indicate an IRQ conflict and I've swapped the RAM around. I'm stumped. Could a dying battery (won't last any length of time unplugged) drop the supply voltages enough to cause BSODs? Surely not

Random Computer Shutdown Issue

Jan 19, 2009

So once I installed W7 beta I was just going around and installing all the programs I needed, when a strange error occurred while I was trying to install AVG, this error didn't give me a message, a warning or anything, but in the middle of the installation my computer just shut off.

While confused as to why I was looking at a blank screen all of a sudden, I restarted my computer, windows 7 booted, I sent an error report, and everything seemed to be working fine, until five minutes later when it happened again, and this happened to me every few minutes of use.

So I got fed up and decided to just go back into my xp partition, but while xp was loading, it happened again. So I could no longer access my xp partition because my computer just spontaneously shuts off every time. I restored until a time before I got the error and everything seemed fine again for some time, W7 wouldn't shut of randomly and I could go into xp.

So about 20 minutes later, while I was installing TF2, it happened again, and I couldn't get into xp again. So I did what I did before and recovered, but this time, I can go into W7 without random shut down, but not into my my xp partition. This is a real big pain in the ass and I would apprieciate any ideas on how to fix this. I'm about to just reintstall windows 7 and see what happens.

Random Sudden Shutdown While Playing Games

Jan 3, 2013

I have sony VPCF1 laptop, which worked fine until a month ago. Windows 7 home premium 64bits. All of a sudden I started getting random shutdowns whenever I'm playing games. (namely Diablo3 and league of legends)I used to play Skyrim on this laptop without any shutdown issues. I suspected overheating problem, but the speedfan log just before the shutdown shows GPU at 80 C and CPU at around 75.I cleaned out the heat sink and re-applied thermal paste anyways. However, I clean the dust in heat sink every 3 months so there wasn't much to begin with. I also bought a cooling pad, which doesn't seem to lower the temperature at all. I checked the hardwares using vaio care none of them showed known issues.

Trying To Debug Slow Shutdown

Aug 11, 2011

I'm trying to debug a slow shutdown on my laptop with an SSD.I've done the msconfig to so non-microsoft services and other startups do not start at boot but this doesn't make a big difference. One thing is that although the shutdown takes 2 minutes, and the disk activity light is pinned solid in those 2 minutes, so something is going on, I can't seem to figure out how to get information about what is going on. The big problem is that 7 seconds after the shutdown command, the event log service shuts down. After that point there are no log entries. Is there a way to configure the event log service so that it doesn't stop right after the shutdown command? If there were log entries this would probably be quick debugging. Also while I am at it, here are my theories for what is going on (1) the disk is busy in those 2 minutes doing some sort of registry backup, or (2) also running through a journaling file system log to update disk blocks to a consistent state, or (3) or running the search indexer. What does Windows 7 do to the disks when it is shutting down?

Occasionally shutting down my computer may take thirty seconds longer than normal(which is 10 seconds). All the peripherals shut down, but the computer keeps "shutting down" for 30 more seconds. Normally peripherals shut down just a second or two before the computer itself shuts down, but here the shutdown is just really delayed.

Computer Freezes And Shutdown

Jul 25, 2012

I'm currently stuck in a hell hole, because I really have no idea what is wrong with my machine at this time. Several things I have noticed is that the crashes never happens when I'm playing video games, even high demanding ones. It's weird because it does happen when browsing the internet, and mostly happens when I'm rendering a video.
When the freezing process starts, slowly applications, one by one becomes not responding. I currently have Realtemp, and while the freezing happens, the temp was around 55F, while my TJ max is 105. In my task manager > performance, my cpu usage drops down all the way down to 1% when the freezing happens. And finally even the mouse won't move, forcing me to force shutdown. I think the computer shuts itself down after a while since when coming back home, it's in a POST situations, giving errors like no bootable device, or system fan failure.

Windows 7 Very Slow To Start AND To Shutdown?

Oct 2, 2012

I went to restart after installing updates, and system was very slow to shut down, and very slow to start. I did run house call, and came up clean, also ran this one you download, but I can't find the shortcut to it, it was about 100 MB, the name was Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, but came up clean as well.I did not time the shutdown yet, but did time the start up. If it matters it was broken down like this. It said "press escape for start up screen" for 40 seconds. Then "starting Windows" for 3 minuets. Then it said "welcome" for 40 seconds, Then a Black screen for 3 minuets. Then I got my desktop and start up sound. I was reading on line, where after a up date, something sometimes gets changed in the registry, where you have to change the Value from "1" back to "0" But that was OK. It was already at "0".I am trying to find the name of it, but of course I can not right now. Think it was "clear page file "I just now went to msconfig and the only thing new that was added was McAfee to start up, but I took it out of start up. I also have it disabled in my add ons (Firefox).Don't know if that could have been an issue, have not tried to shut down/restart yet. I have not installed any new hardware. I did put new batteries in my wireless mouse, that I don't use often. I am going to try and run CC cleaner next I guess.

Computer Freezes On Shutdown/hibernate

Aug 5, 2011

I have an ASUS G51JX-X2 laptop with 8 GB RAM (4 2GB chips). I've had this computer for about 18 months without any problems. A couple of days ago, I noticed that the computer hung up when trying to hibernate. The screen was black and the hard drive light was off, but the touchpad, wireless, bluetooth, and power lights remained on. I left it and went to work, and when I returned it was still in this state so I held the power button to shut it down. The computer started normally, but then that night when I went to shut the computer down, it did the same thing. I made some changes to disable the services at start up in an attempt to narrow down the problem and I discover that is I choose restart, the computer shuts down and restarts fine (although it sits with the screen black and the lights on for a while). It will not shut down or hibernate though. what's going on:

I thought I might have gotten a driver update so I looked at Windows Update and I hadn't gotten anything since 7/21. I did get one on 8/3, but that was after I started having problems. Using msconfig I disabled the start up services (except MS) and start up items to see if that helped and rebooted. The reboot worked, but then the shutdown failed again. I read in some forums that it might be related to the wireless, so I used the switch on the front of the computer to turn off wireless and bluetooth before shutting down - no luck. I thought it might be a problem with the memory since that's a relatively recent upgrade so I created a boot CD and ran memtest86+. It ran all night through 4 passes and no errors. I ran chkdsk on the hard drive just to be safe and it didn't find any errors. I checked to see if ClearPageFileAtShutdown was set to 1 in the registry, but it is 0. I checked to make sure that the bios is up to date and it is (version 208).

Windows Freezes At Shutdown Screen?

Feb 13, 2013

Sometimes, but not always, when I am restarting or shutting down my computer Windows freezes at the Shutdown screen, the little circle thing just stops spinning and nothing happens. I just built this computer a few days ago, installed every possible update/driver. Not very savvy when it comes to BIOS stuff or whatever the root of this issue is..

I am running the following:

Gigabyte X77 UD3H Motherboard
Intel 3570K
Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB Memory
GeForce GTX 660 GPU
Windows 7

Only programs outside of stuff that came with MB, GPU, etc is League of Legends. I noticed Easy Tune 6 was installed with the MB disc, messed around with it a bit but read bad things so deleted it. Thats all i can think of..

Slow System Hdd Performance After A Unexpected Shutdown

Mar 5, 2012

This is something I have seen occur multiple times in 17 years of using windows, after a unexpected shutdown windows i/o performance slows right down and I still dont have the answer to it.

Today I accidently cut the power to my pc, so windows didnt crash it just lost power.

Windows took about twice as long to boot. After it had booted the system hdd was very busy doing I dont know why (wasnt superfetch or virus scanning). The i/o was used by the system process. Outlook took a looooong time to open. it then also took a very long time to close deleting the deleted emails which are usually way faster. Internet explorer took about 2 minutes to restore crashed tabs which was massive disk i/o. Opening tiny apps where the hdd light either flashes very briefly or doesnt come on at all have a noticeable 1-2 sec delay with the light on solid.

I expect after a manual defrag things will be back to normal. Dos all the prefetch data get trashed on a unexpected shutdown or something?

Shutdown Freezes / Unable To Startup Successfully

Jan 11, 2012

Yesterday when I went to shut down my computer, it froze. Not seeing any alternative, I manually powered it down. When later attempting to turn the machine on, I received an error (with no specific error message) saying that it was unable to startup successfully, and presented me with a menu for running diagnostics, backing up data, resetting to factory defaults, etc.. Being very short on sleep at the time, I decided "I'll deal with this tomorrow" and shut it down.

Just now, when powering up to try to deal with it, it started up fine. Thing is, without having done anything to fix the issue, I'm worried there might still be a problem with my machine, since I've been told failures to boot properly usually indicate something serious. The computer is an HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx running Windows 7 64-bit service pack 1. I ran a virus scan and it came up clean, and a spyware scan is running as I type this.
