View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using folder lock 6.0 to lock folder on my two laptops. I have a WD External hard drive. I want to lock (password protect) some folders on the portable/external harddrive. I don't want aany encryption because I may forgot the password and may not be able to recover data. I also don't want to lock complete partition. I just want to make it hidden/password protected from casual users. Is it possible using folder lock? It has a portability feature but it requires to transfer all data to a locker. I have a very large amount of data which I want to lock (~100GB). Folder lock has a feature to lock any folder on hard drive but it dosn't work when it is external/portable hard drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running windows 7 64 bit, on an eMachines lap top, I have purchased an external HDD and now I am trying to create a perfect copy of my system. I used DriveImage XML but it failed. I have used this program in the past with great success on a different computer running WindowsXP.The failure I get is "failed to lock drive". I've tried skipping the lock drive option and going straight to shadow copy; same problem.I can only assume the failure to lock drive is based on permissions and files being in use. So I think I need to attempt this without loading windows. Is there anyway of running a "free" drive cloning program from a DVD or USB Flash drive without booting into Windows?I would just bit torrent a win7 OS, install it on my external, and run the program from their, but I don't want to have to resort to law breaking, and I have never run linux.
Also I tried using a "backup" feature on Paragon Partition Manager, it did "backup" the system, but it didn't clone the drive. All the backup files are written in directories such as "C:/archive/" and thus I assume there is no way of booting into a system written that way. I assume it's like windows system restore, and what I need is a bootable image of my primary drive.Oh and I should clarify, that it's not my external drive that fails to lock; the external HDD has been formatted, partitioned, and can read and write data just fine, and has way more than enough room to copy the HDD in my lap top. Also, the HDD on my lap top has 1 primary partition, with two logical partitions. I have no idea what the logical partitions are for and if that could be causing the problem.
how can i lock with a password just like we do it on folder ... is there any special software for these kind of thing..

For some reason, when changing users to my wife's profile, the desktop has to be prepared each time - as a temporary profile. The folder location has moved from Users/wife to Users/Users/wife and has a lock icon on it. I have tried moving the entire folder as administrator and received a not responding message.Short of a restore in which I will lose data is there a way to 'import' her profile under a new user and then delete the corrupted profile?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Iconia W500 that came preinstalled with Windows 7 32bit Home Premium. I made recovery discs from the tablet before installing Windows 8 on it, which runs great. What I would like to do, if possible, is to use those Windows 7 restore discs and restore them to an external hard drive and be able to boot from it and run the original Windows 7 that came preinstalled. The reason I am wanting to do this, as there were some programs, drivers, and other things that I cannot download from Acer or retrieve from the restore discs, and can only access from the OS if it is actually running.

View 1 Replies View RelatedLots of BSOD, lock ups, hard drive not being detected by bios, is it failing? Let me start by saying my PC is custom built, most parts are only a year old. The oldest parts are the harddrive (about 5 years) and the soundcard (about 7 years). I have never had major problems until now (a year after building it).
It all started with a blue screen.
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Reboot windows and it seems to start up fine, gets to the desktop and locks up.
Reboot windows and I get another blue screen.
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
I try to start windows from the last good configuration. Error. Registry file failure. Cannot load hive file. I try booting from the windows cd and running a chkdsk. Hard drive starts making a buzzing sound. It gets to step 3 of 5 and stops. Failed to transfer logged messages. Status 50. Now the bios rarely even "sees" the drive. When I can get it to boot and see it, any attempt at diagnostics and repairs produces errors, locks up, or fails.
Is this a bad hard drive? I would hate to spend the money on a new one only to find it is a bad mobo or virus. How can I diagnose this? If it is a bad drive I would like to save what juice is left in it and try to recover a few files before it dies. Most of the important data has been backed up but I would like to try and get a few game save files if I can. But its not a disaster if the drive data is not recoverable.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a message about errors when I plugged in my WD external hard drive. I let the Error Checking run and when it finished it said I needed to format the disk. I cancelled this and looked in my computer and although the drive appeared, no details (i.e. space usage) was present.
I re-ran Error Checking with "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. After running this the drive appeared properly in My Computer.
However there are many files missing, and the space usage of what is there doesn't match up with what my computer says.
Files I can physically see: ~ 120 Gb. Space usage according to Explorer: ~420 Gb. So it looks like tha data may still be there but Windows can't see it? Edit: BTW, forgot to say, all this is booted into Windows 7 not XP on my dual boot system.

View 5 Replies View RelatedLong story short, my ex girlfriend got a netbook a few years ago, and it came with windows 7 starter. I gave her a copy of my valid Windows 7 Home Premium keys and taught her how to reinstall Windows 7 on a USB drive. So now she has the netbook with windows 7 on it, and she upgraded to a new 15 inch HP Envy, she doesn't use the netbook anymore. And since we don't talk anymore, any attempt to ask if I can have the key back and she reinstall the old system on there from the recovery partition, it's all gone unanswered.I just want to have my windows 7 Home premium key back, she isn't using the netbook and I need it to install now.
What I'm wondering is if I can just install windows 7 on my laptop, and then activate it, I know it will deactivate the netbook, but can I lock the key to my computer only so if she or anyone else tried to reactivate it, it wouldn't let them and it wouldn't affect my computer?I just want my key back and she isn't using it anymore, she just blocked me on facebook today because I contacted her about it. So I'm done with trying to work with her and I just want to get this over with.
My Drive E just lost from my computer! I don't know how did it happen. I try to search through google but I can't find a solution.

It would be used only to game, surf, or maybe do some photoshop type stuff. I have no use for file sharing or anything like that.
In schools they often lock down their computers so that it boots the same image every time, and none of the changes from the users are stored when they shut down the computer. I'm looking to do this for my HTPC aswell. I want to set it up to boot the same image for my C-partition every time, I'm storing all the my databases with mediainfo and watched tags on a separate partition so that info should still be saved after a shutdown.

(I had to use my phone as it seems you cannot use print screen at this login)
Normally it would have the persons picture and name, and all you would have to do is enter the password, but it seems it has made it so you have to enter the Username and Password which is quite an annoyance.
I went through all of the settings to make sure that I had not accidentally changed any, from what I saw I had not changed any settings or if there were in fact any settings that causes this behaviour.
I sometimes have to leave comp and go for some work with all the windows open. Is there any feature whereby i can lock my computer and then unlock on return.i mean something like Ctl + alt + del is what we normally use in offices ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHad a power failure during a recovery of an Acronis backup on my C: drive. It seems it happened while Acronis just started loading the backup files? When I restarted the Samsung Laptop local drive C: did not appear in Explorer. Only drive D: and my DVD drive E: appeared (C an D are partitions on the same hard disk). The recovery software was on a hidden partition but when trying to use the Samsung Recovery facility it say Drive C: not found. After trying out suggestions found on the internet I only managed to screw everything up resulting in also loosing the D: drive containing my Acronis backup. The laptop did not start at all. I at last managed to get it going after installing Windows 7 again and I then sit with only C System Disk, D System reserved and E: DVD drive at that point.Foolishly I shrinked the system disk C and created a data disk. That disk is now Data Disk F. and not D as original. The Acronis backup containing all my files and data was on the original Data Disk D:I have used various free software to try and find that specific file. But they all search by drive and the missing file must be somewhere on the disk either as lost or wrong drive letter or something.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen i walk away from my Windows 7 PC, i'd like to lock the screen for good security and put it to sleep for good energy savings. Doesn't that make sense, at least in some situations? But if you lock it, you can't sleep it, and if you put it to sleep, then you can't lock it.
Probably most people lock it and allow it to go to sleep later after a timeout period. But we could all be greener if there were a way to do both sleep and lock at the same time. win7q has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.
