Computer Freezes After Installing Windows Update
Jan 26, 2012
Just recently, i read up that doing a hard shutdown is bad. Now, after installing an update, my other computer is frozen, except the mouse. I've tried CTRL+ALT+Delete, that wont do anything. I can't click anything

It started freezing up around the same time an update for my video card would not install. The video card is running about 47 degrees C. I did a clean install to change from Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium to 64 bit Home Premium and still freezes randomly. Sometimes it will go a long time before it freezes. I have a NVIDEA Ge Force 8400 GS and I did install the 64 it drivers. I ran Malewarebytes and no problems there. The windows update that will not install is a Graphic Adapter WDD M1, WDD M2.

My laptop used to run XP, something got corrupted and I got the blue screen of death. I took it to my brother (who is a network administrator) to fix it. He couldn't figure out how to fix or restore whatever system file was corrupted in XP, so he backed up my documents & program files, and then installed Windows 7. He then dumped all of those backed up files into a folder on my C drive called OLD FILES. It has been super slow and occastionally freezes since that time.
The C drive is almost full. I am certain that I have multiple copies of the same files and programs, and have the files for old software that I do not need or use. I cannot uninstall many of them because they were not installed, they were copied. I have tried many utilities in an attempt to find the duplicate files, or to clean up old data, and to speed up the system, but I only see minor improvements
Also, I have very little free space on the hard drive. however I am so afraid of deleting the wrong file or program and being back where I started when it crashed. I need advice on what I should do to fix this situation. Should I leave the OS as is, or change back to XP? And how can I determine which program filess are actually being used and which are duplicates?
I have thought about just buying a new laptop but that is not really an option at this time. So what do I need to do to make this laptop A) run faster and B) clean out all those duplicates and extra files I do not need.

System was rock solid for 1 year till I downloaded Win7 SP1 a few weeks ago. Immediately, I started getting random freezes. Couldn't restore to previous state because the SP1 install erased the restore points!Uninstalled SP1. Updated all drivers: BIOS, Chipset, Video, USB, Audio, LAN, Mouse, etc. No Dice! Performed CHKDSK, sfc /scannow & DiskCleanup. Tried "Clean Boot" using MSCONFIG to disable all services.Disabled USB & LAN in BIOS. No Dice! Won't even run in Safe Mode... nor, complete an installation from the Win7 DVD w/o locking up or Black Screening[CODE]I read some people solved their problem by simply changing out the Power Supply. This one "seems" to be running fine... and, it *WAS* fine before the dreaded SP1 nuked my Win7 installation. What is going on, and how can I get the OS reinstalled???? and, get the bugs out of the XP side?

Windows Update seems to be stuck in and endless cycle of applying the same 5 important updates over and over again. Probably been happening for about 3 months now, and despite going through the install process and following all the instructions to the letter, every time I start up, the same updates are available for download again. Here is a screenshot of Windows Update showing the updates in question

Config:
Hardware: Desktop
Intel i5-2310 sandybridge processor Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 ver. 2.2 Motherboard
Transcend 4GB 1333MHz RAM
No External Graphics
Software:
Dual Boot - Windows XP SP 2 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64.m:
Everything is working great in XP. After installing video drivers in windows 7, the wizards asks for restart. When i restart windows 7 hangs just after the "starting windows" logo, just at the welcome screen. It is not random, everytime it freezes at the same point. The system hangs and the display is just horizontal garbage lines and I need to hard reset the CPU. Without the video drivers, windows 7 works fine.
Things I tried:
1. Drivers from Motherboard CD/DVD.
2. Drivers from Gigabyte Website.
3. Drivers from Intel Website.
4. Changed the SATA mode to AHCI/IDE in BIOS. XP wont boot in AHCI.
5. XP shows Intel 2000 processor graphics. CPUZ tool in windows 7 shows Intel 1000-T.

FYI: On last shut down of system on 9-24-2012(win7 ultimate) windows update installed KB2538243. When starting system back up several hours later, window's would not start. Started in safe mode, used system restore, all ok for now! Checked recent updates and found that the above update "failed to install" and was the only update listed.

Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed. It just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer. It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.

I have seen this problem on other forums. None had a satisfactory answer (besides the usual reinstall).Windows now fails to boot, after Win update automatically installed the update and insisting I restart. The update was Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.97.1113.0). Startup repair finds no problems. The BIOS recognizes the system drive and reports no errors.
I had done (before the update installed itself): repaired the "windows can't find the DVD drive" problem using the Microsoft "Fixit" for that problem it was successful). Also the external storage drive on a USB 3.0 controlled was dropped by the system at some point (hence my anxiety; all my backups, including a rather stale system drive image, are on that drive). I can access the Win 7 system drive with another OS on the machine (XP SP3).

Yesterday, AVG 2011 did an automatic update on my ASUS n55sf laptop. After reboot, Outlook 2007 displays message " cannot display the view" and none of my folders can be opened. Spoke to AVG and loaded AVG 2012 internet security; same problem. Started outlook in safe mode and attempted to disable avg add on, but get message that I need to be logged on as administrator (I am the administrator and only user of the laptop.Went to program files x86, office 12, outlook and right clicked on outlook logo and selected run as administrator; still cannot disable avg add on, getting the same administrator message.

I installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. After it rebooted, on the Windows 7 loading screen it shows "Applying update operation XXXX of XXXX". After a certain number it says "Error applying operation XXXX of XXXX", and then the system proceeds to hang on that screen, meaning that I am unable to access Windows. I try mashing F8 for my life when resetting the computer, but I never get a list of boot options, so I cannot get into Safe Mode or even try the computer's Last Known Good Configuration. The edition of this version of Windows 7 is 64 bit Ultimate. The laptop I am using is also 64 bit Ultimate.
Another thing I want to point out is that both of these computers have been taking an incredibly long time (near 12 hours at this point) trying to download and install Service Pack 1. There is no spyware or anything running in the background. I am fearing that I might get the same error on this machine but I have taken the liberty of creating a System Restore point in the event it happens. I have two other Windows 7 machines in the house (32 bit Professional and 64 bit Home Premium), and both of them installed Service Pack 1 without any kind of problem, and both of those computers installed them rather quickly.

My audio was working well, but i decided to start recording find a way to improve my outbound audio quality (i'm an audiophile). I purchased a Fast Track Pro. Unlike other threads I've read, I'm not seeing any BSOD and its not crackling. My operating system will just stop functioning, or freeze for a half a second at a time. This can become frequent at about 10 times in a thirty second period requiring a restart. I had installed the latest x64 driver for my W7 x64 system from M-audio's website.
I uninstalled the driver and restarted, the issue persisted. I then installed the on-board audio driver and restarted, no system lag is present. The audio device-driver is acting up and I'm not sure why. Because i bought it used M-audio's support is a no-go. Are there any additional steps I can take which may troubleshoot this issue?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 32bit on one of my drives via Vista, I click install on the DVD and click the drive. It does the first stage of installing and expanding files (whatever that is!). Then it restarts.. upon restart it boots onto Windows Setup and I get the logo which glows for a while then freezes.
I've looked this up and i've removed ram so I just have 1stick of 1gig and i've unplugged various USB items except my keyboard and mouse and still get the issue.
Any ideas?

I currently have an ASUS K53E that I've put a 60GB SSD into. I recently had to send out the laptop for service with ASUS, but I swapped the SSD for the original drive at that time (to save the chance they may re-format the drive). In any case, their repair apparently included a BIOS update... When I got the computer back, I naturally swapped the SSD back into the computer. Since then I've had numerous issues, the most prominent being that WLE stopped working (Every time I load Messenger it inexplicably stops working), and when I attempt to un-install it it will have a problem and abort the removal. With skype, I installed it fine, but it will launch, have a problem, then close! This is extremely frustrating..So really, my first thought is that there is a BIOS-update related issue, because the BIOS was flashed with the other drive in the laptop, and the installation on the SSD was installed/configured before the BIOS flash.Am I looking at a clean install of windows? Or could I get away with just a repair? I'd really prefer not to reinstall if I don't have to (Getting the OEM install on the SSD was hard enough in the first place).

I reinstalled Windows 7 on my computer a week ago when I bought an SSD, and then 8 came out, and I got it for super cheap so I decided to try it out. Well, I'm back to 7. ANYWAY, my issue is that virtually all of my updates are failing. I saw this problem before I "upgraded" to 8, and now I'm seeing it again. My computer stays on the "updating" screen for a while, and then says the updates fails, and reverts to the last known function version of Windows. So my computer is useable, but I would like to have my updates so I don't have to wait 5 minutes for Windows to scratch its butt and get on with life.My error code is 800705B4.I wanted to show a picture of exactly what I'm seeing in my update history, but don't really want to take the time to sign up for a picture hosting website. If you absolutely need it, I will. Basically, I have an update history with a long list of:"Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems
