Virtually Every Update Fails Installing
Nov 3, 2012
I reinstalled Windows 7 on my computer a week ago when I bought an SSD, and then 8 came out, and I got it for super cheap so I decided to try it out. Well, I'm back to 7. ANYWAY, my issue is that virtually all of my updates are failing. I saw this problem before I "upgraded" to 8, and now I'm seeing it again. My computer stays on the "updating" screen for a while, and then says the updates fails, and reverts to the last known function version of Windows. So my computer is useable, but I would like to have my updates so I don't have to wait 5 minutes for Windows to scratch its butt and get on with life.My error code is 800705B4.I wanted to show a picture of exactly what I'm seeing in my update history, but don't really want to take the time to sign up for a picture hosting website. If you absolutely need it, I will. Basically, I have an update history with a long list of:"Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

I have seen this problem on other forums. None had a satisfactory answer (besides the usual reinstall).Windows now fails to boot, after Win update automatically installed the update and insisting I restart. The update was Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.97.1113.0). Startup repair finds no problems. The BIOS recognizes the system drive and reports no errors.
I had done (before the update installed itself): repaired the "windows can't find the DVD drive" problem using the Microsoft "Fixit" for that problem it was successful). Also the external storage drive on a USB 3.0 controlled was dropped by the system at some point (hence my anxiety; all my backups, including a rather stale system drive image, are on that drive). I can access the Win 7 system drive with another OS on the machine (XP SP3).

I have a valid copy of Windows 7 family pack. I have used for a while. Worked just fine until I recently had a HD failure, replaced HD and cloned it and had to reload Windows 7 from my valid Windows 7 install disk. I have a "confirmed" Genuine logo on my System page and have confirmed with Windows online that the product key is valid.Issues: ~Windows update will not work. No update come in and updates errors out, saying the service is not running, when I check with the Windows Servcies, Windows update IS running ~Windows homegroup networking will not work, even though Windows "sees" the network..it will not join the homegroup with my password ~Today Windows online validation is saying my Product ID has expired? Why...my System page says I have a valid copy with a Windows Logo.~ Again I have a valid "Family Pack" used on only 2 computers, even though I could have a thrid I do not. I reload from the valid install disk. Thats when my problems statred. I use Mcfee firewall. Turning off the firewall seemed NOT to help either.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers,

2 days of searching google, its various articles, forums, sites.. but none of them apply.Issue: Error Code 800B0100 when trying to install Windows Update KB2556532.I've got no idea what to do at this point, even downloading this "tool" the help file suggestsdoesn't fix anything, I couldn't download it at first, it froze 3 other computers in the processan somehow I eventually got it but as I launched it I soon learned it'd freeze at thelast 5-25% of the progress bar aka "HANGS" the whole system.Along my journey I learned that any virus scanners & firewalls HAD to be disabled to have anyhope of getting this far, but now.. it's just at 'that" point.
Win 7 64 bit home prem. (not my idea to get this os, i hate it thus far) sp1 with seeminglyevery update but this ONE.I don't have a windows disc for this, its got that stupid "windows disc saved to a partition"crap that I hate as I'm sure many others do too.Zone Alarm & Avast but those get disabled so I don't think thats going to matter to ya'll.I can't think of anything else that'd get in the way, oh an the "trustedinstaller" thingy isenabled an running so.. ya.Hope someone else can solve this, it's a brand new laptop, never "upgraded from anyprevious windows-whatever".

I am having difficulties with updating Windows 7 on my laptop MSI FX603. Windows 7 came loaded with the laptop, though I do not know if I have windows 7 basic, premium, pro or else.I went on vacations in July, came back in August and I had a bunch of updates. I updated everything at once but I have 8 update files that fail to install from which only 1 error fail to update occur in the update history; therefore I assume this particular error prevents other updates to install correctly.
Update for Windows 7 for x64 based systems (KB2732500)
installation date: 8/29/2012
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
Installation status: Failed
Error details: code 80071A90
Update type: Recommended
The knowledge base has several links, I tried all of them. 1 of these knowledge base is about downloading a windows 7 little program called "fixit" but after several attempts, I concluded Fixit cannot solve my issue or is not the proper way to solve my issue. The whole updating package files is roughly around 39 megs and I wonder if Windows 7 actually download the packages every time I click on Update or if Windows stores the updates ready to be installed somewhere on my HDD in which case I would need to re-download the update but I do not know how?

It got stuck at 15%. So I rebooted into Safe Mode, tried System Restore. It failed, so I tried System Recovery Options, that failed too. Then I rebooted it regularly and it tells me that, in fact, System Restore worked. Now what do I do? (Besides backup my stuff.) Try to update Windows manually or do I need to do something before that?

My Dell 1525 Windows 7 laptop had begun to experience more and more frequent hard drive errors. So, in an effort to fend off total disaster, I purchased a new hard drive. The new drive was slightly larger than the old one (250GB vs 160GB). With a week old backup in hand, I used Acronis to do a disk CLONE to the new drive in an external enclosure. I was able to do it without any apparent drive errors. I then swapped drive for drive and rebooted. My most frequent apps worked fine, network access was fine, etc. Then I went to do a Windows Update - not fine. The little shield in the upper left corner of the box was red and, when I clicked on the "Check for Updates" box, it replied Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I went to Services, started the service, marked it Automatic, and tried again - no joy. So, as it suggested, I rebooted. No joy again. After trying a couple of different backup versions with the same result. I went back to square one and used the original Windows 7 install disk. The install went fine and I was able to use Windows Update successfully. I hoped that having verified that a vanilla Windows 7 worked, I might be lucky enough to just be able to restore my latest backup. Wrong. The system appears to work fine with the only KNOWN problem being Update - there may be other problems, as yet unknown. Differences I am aware of: new hardware partitions proportionally larger than the previous disk.

While recently using Nero 10's suite of programs I encountered a screen indicating several programs had newer versions and that I should update before continuing. I then updated the programs. The update process required a system reboot to complete the update, since part of the update process could not be completed while the system was running. After clicking on the "Reboot Now Button" the system went through a normal shutdown and start up process. However, after displaying the Windows 7 screen the system hung and I never saw the Windows 7 Logon screen. At this point I powered down and restarted the computer.
The computer displayed the "Windows did not shutdown properly last time" screen during the loading process. I then selected to finish booting in SAFE Mode. The computer then booted successfully and I was able to exercise the system. I then attempted to restart the computer from SAFE MODE but again encountered the "hanging" condition. I again attempted to reboot and once again received the "Windows did not shutdown properly last time" screen. Since booting into SAFE MODE hadn't solved the problem, I attempted to boot into SAFE MODE with networking. This caused the system to again "hang". In summary, I am able to boot into all but the SAFE MODE with networking capability, which reproduces the problem.Since SAFE MODE failed to resolve the issue, I attempted to boot from a Windows 7 Installation DVD. After successfully loading from I selected the "Repair your Computer" option, which then located the Windows 7 system and attempted to repair the error.
After completing the system repair, I again attempted to restart the system, thinking the repair had been successful. However, the computer again "hung" without displaying the Windows Logon screen.I then used an external USB drive containing Fedora 15 to successfully boot the computer. This has allowed me to "poke" around on the hard drive containing the Windows 7 system. I've examined the failing drives partition tables to see if during the updating process the drive had become corrupted. Upon examination of the drive's partition table, I could not find any apparent errors. The following screen shot shows the partition contents of the Windows 7 drive:[CODE]

I have tried connecting to my router with both wireless and lan cable but they both fail. What is strange is that my vista laptop (currently using) has no problems connecting either wirelessly or using the same lan cable as my desktop failed with. My windows 7 desktop was working fine earlier today but after I went out it installed the updates and since then no amount of rebooting or restarting of the router has fixed the problem.

I've got a system with an 100 gig C Drive. There are very few programs/files on it, with a few exceptions such as Photoshop and some movie downloads. The drive should have enormous storage capacity. But, it lists that it is nearly completely full, and I have only a few dozen megabytes of storage space left!
The totality of programs on my computer totals at a little more than 8 gigs, and my download data is surely less. So then, where the hell is all this data coming from?, how can I view this mystery ~85 gigs of used storage, and what can I do to get rid of it / free up my C Drive?

A few months ago I built my first PC. All parts were brand new, except the graphics card. I couldn't afford the one I wanted so I used an old Radeon HD 4670 - a card that doesn't match the rest of the system in power.Maybe a week ago, I started getting blue screens. At first I'd be able to use the computer for hours before the BSOD. It would generally go by too fast for me to read what it said, though I caught a few error messages, which I will post below. I'd say about 5 days ago is when it became unusable. Sometimes I get a few minutes before it crashed, sometimes only 40 seconds or so. I have been using a family member's (extremely slow) Mac laptop for internet use, and also an iPod touch on the side. Needless to say, I'm beyond frustrated that I can't access any of my music or use a speedy computer to do what I want. I'm worried that I did something wrong while building - but why would it take months to become apparent?
- I ran memtest on the advice of a forum member. Two passes is what they recommended, and no errors popped up.
- I scheduled a check disk, although when I rebooted my computer to let it run, it only took 5-10 minutes - shouldn't it take WAY longer than that?
- System Restore. I tried yesterday and got a BSOD during. Today I was able to restore to the 24th (that was my earliest restore point), however about 2 minutes afterward I got the usual BSOD.
BSOD Errors:It has shown so many errors - it seems to literally be a new one each time. I don't know if I've even seen the same one twice. Sometimes it's on the top, in capital letters, and sometimes on the bottom, with an extension (a file). These are the ones I spotted (especially after I told it not to restart on error so I could read them):
- SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
- IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
- CACHE_MANAGER
- atikmdag
- cng.sys
- ntfs.sys
- fltmgr.sys
- TDY.sys
Here is my dxdiag, from the 25th.

Windows Update installation of Win7 SP1 (updating existing version of 6.1.7600.16385) reports the install as successful until reboot, then says successful and unsuccessful in the same dialog box. Error ID is 80242016. Subsequent run of windows update shows SP1 not installed. Problem repeats, even after following all steps in troubleshooting, including running the recommended hot fix for KB 947821, troubleshooting, & turning off anti-virus. I currently have an ASUS K53E that I've put a 60GB SSD into. I recently had to send out the laptop for service with ASUS, but I swapped the SSD for the original drive at that time (to save the chance they may re-format the drive). In any case, their repair apparently included a BIOS update... When I got the computer back, I naturally swapped the SSD back into the computer. Since then I've had numerous issues, the most prominent being that WLE stopped working (Every time I load Messenger it inexplicably stops working), and when I attempt to un-install it it will have a problem and abort the removal. With skype, I installed it fine, but it will launch, have a problem, then close! This is extremely frustrating..So really, my first thought is that there is a BIOS-update related issue, because the BIOS was flashed with the other drive in the laptop, and the installation on the SSD was installed/configured before the BIOS flash.Am I looking at a clean install of windows? Or could I get away with just a repair? I'd really prefer not to reinstall if I don't have to (Getting the OEM install on the SSD was hard enough in the first place).
