Laptop Slow / Freezes Since Installing Windows 7

Feb 24, 2012

My laptop used to run XP, something got corrupted and I got the blue screen of death. I took it to my brother (who is a network administrator) to fix it. He couldn't figure out how to fix or restore whatever system file was corrupted in XP, so he backed up my documents & program files, and then installed Windows 7. He then dumped all of those backed up files into a folder on my C drive called OLD FILES. It has been super slow and occastionally freezes since that time.

The C drive is almost full. I am certain that I have multiple copies of the same files and programs, and have the files for old software that I do not need or use. I cannot uninstall many of them because they were not installed, they were copied. I have tried many utilities in an attempt to find the duplicate files, or to clean up old data, and to speed up the system, but I only see minor improvements

Also, I have very little free space on the hard drive. however I am so afraid of deleting the wrong file or program and being back where I started when it crashed. I need advice on what I should do to fix this situation. Should I leave the OS as is, or change back to XP? And how can I determine which program filess are actually being used and which are duplicates?

I have thought about just buying a new laptop but that is not really an option at this time. So what do I need to do to make this laptop A) run faster and B) clean out all those duplicates and extra files I do not need.

Why Does Windows SLOW Down While Installing, Extracting, Copying Etc

I have an enigma with my PC. When i try to extract big files, copy, or install (games or anything) my pc becomes irresponsive and generally very SLOW. For sometimes I even cannot browse on internet, because firefox becomes very unstable.Recently i bought Assasin's creed brotherhood and while i was installing my pc was almost usseless. After installation i started the game and it was NOT playable, even the menu was usseless (cursor was very laggy, and impossible to control, and everything worked maybe at 2-3Fps)Strange thing is when i start task manager (c-a-d) my cpu ussage is at max 25% and memory at 55 max)notice that I can play assasin's creed 2 all maxed at 1920x1080.

Freezes And Black Screens (re)installing Windows 7?

May 7, 2011

System was rock solid for 1 year till I downloaded Win7 SP1 a few weeks ago. Immediately, I started getting random freezes. Couldn't restore to previous state because the SP1 install erased the restore points!Uninstalled SP1. Updated all drivers: BIOS, Chipset, Video, USB, Audio, LAN, Mouse, etc. No Dice! Performed CHKDSK, sfc /scannow & DiskCleanup. Tried "Clean Boot" using MSCONFIG to disable all services.Disabled USB & LAN in BIOS. No Dice! Won't even run in Safe Mode... nor, complete an installation from the Win7 DVD w/o locking up or Black Screening[CODE]I read some people solved their problem by simply changing out the Power Supply. This one "seems" to be running fine... and, it *WAS* fine before the dreaded SP1 nuked my Win7 installation. What is going on, and how can I get the OS reinstalled???? and, get the bugs out of the XP side?

Desktop Freezes After Installing Video Drivers In Windows 7

Aug 16, 2012

Config:
Hardware: Desktop
Intel i5-2310 sandybridge processor Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 ver. 2.2 Motherboard
Transcend 4GB 1333MHz RAM
No External Graphics
Software:

Dual Boot - Windows XP SP 2 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64.m:

Everything is working great in XP. After installing video drivers in windows 7, the wizards asks for restart. When i restart windows 7 hangs just after the "starting windows" logo, just at the welcome screen. It is not random, everytime it freezes at the same point. The system hangs and the display is just horizontal garbage lines and I need to hard reset the CPU. Without the video drivers, windows 7 works fine.

Things I tried:

1. Drivers from Motherboard CD/DVD.

2. Drivers from Gigabyte Website.

3. Drivers from Intel Website.

4. Changed the SATA mode to AHCI/IDE in BIOS. XP wont boot in AHCI.

5. XP shows Intel 2000 processor graphics. CPUZ tool in windows 7 shows Intel 1000-T.

Computer Seems Slow And Sometimes Freezes?

May 6, 2011

I am having trouble with my computer which is still farely new (got it at christmas time),. The computer was built by Cyberpower has Intel Core i5 CPU 650@3.20GHz 3.19GHz, 4.0 GB RAM, 64 bit operatings system in it. I have recently been having trouble where I click to go from one page to another whil on internet, and it seems to freeze up and take a minute or so to catch up. I have 94% free memory so it does not seem it should be freezing or running slow as it is. I run Norton security on it and if anything it only ever comes up with tracking cookies.

When I go into Hijack this and click on run scan and safe results I have a box that comes up saying For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file.If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack This may not be able to fix this.If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, blah, blah, blah....I did that but the notepad came up saying This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. There is also an example of a hosts file but then it says localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.1. How to I go to DNS and what do I do there to make the program workroperly.. I want to upload the data from my scan and have someone tell me if there are any files I need to remove because I do not know enough about this program to do it on my own

Slow Shutdown, And Random Spike Freezes

Sep 18, 2011

I have recently started experiencing abnormally slow shutdowns (it will go to the windows login screen with the shutting down message and hang there for about ~5 minutes), and random freezes on my PC. The freezes happen from things as small as moving the mouse. I run a weekly virus scan, and have come up with no viruses, though it could be something not detected by my antivirus.

The PC is less then 2 years old.

HD Movies Have Slow Playback In ITunes Freezes On Import

Jan 10, 2011

let me get you caught up to speed. I have a reasonably-sized digital movie, music, and tv show collection I corral with iTunes. To date I have 145 TV shows covering almost 90GB (mixed SD and HD), 1000 songs covering 8.2GB (From 256kbps AAC to 320kbps MP3 to Apple Loss-less), and 29 movies covering about 50GB (all SD), totaling around 150GB, give or take, I didn't have a machine capable of managing my HD content effectively. I was limited on HDD space as well as processing power. I am the type of person that wants to have ALL of my audio-visual media (minus pictures) in one place. In my case, iTunes. I've decided it's time to re-encode the containers for all of my HD movies to an MPEG4-type container to allow iTunes to even acknowledge it's presence. Since the release of Handbrake 0.9.5, I've been able to encode right of the disk to a file, even mix down audio tracks to AC3, etc. etc. My point here is I have one movie, Hancock, 1080P, around 4GB with audio, encoded H.264/MPEG4 @ ~4500kbps, imports into iTunes just fine. BUT, when playing, it either plays slow (say, 80% of real time) or freezes altogether around 10 seconds in. iTunes freezes when I try to give it a file over 4GB... sort of... It acts as though it's frozen... It even freezes the window I dragged the file out of (drag and dropping into iTunes) so I can't even see my desktop. Windows isn't frozen. I can still move on with life and do other things just fine. iTunes is supposedly chugging away using one of my cores according to my task manager.

OS Freezes, Audio Freezes To After Installing USB Audio Device?

Aug 5, 2011

My audio was working well, but i decided to start recording find a way to improve my outbound audio quality (i'm an audiophile). I purchased a Fast Track Pro. Unlike other threads I've read, I'm not seeing any BSOD and its not crackling. My operating system will just stop functioning, or freeze for a half a second at a time. This can become frequent at about 10 times in a thirty second period requiring a restart. I had installed the latest x64 driver for my W7 x64 system from M-audio's website.

I uninstalled the driver and restarted, the issue persisted. I then installed the on-board audio driver and restarted, no system lag is present. The audio device-driver is acting up and I'm not sure why. Because i bought it used M-audio's support is a no-go. Are there any additional steps I can take which may troubleshoot this issue?

Win7 Freezes After First Stage Of Installing

Then it restarts.. upon restart it boots onto Windows Setup and I get the logo which glows for a while then freezes.

I've looked this up and i've removed ram so I just have 1stick of 1gig and i've unplugged various USB items except my keyboard and mouse and still get the issue.

Any ideas?

Laptop Running Windows 7 Is Too Slow?

Mar 19, 2011

I made a thread about this about a month ago, but I did everything I was told to do and nothing changed. This laptop is way too slow. The audio is just a big mess from the login screen and onward(really laggy and static-y). I ran some malware stuff and registry repair as suggested, in safe mode and normal mode, but nothing was fixed. After a few hours, I gave up and dual-booted Ubuntu 10.04 and it worked perfectly. Speed was excellent, audio was too. The only problem is I just use PCs for gaming and chatting, and I can't do much gaming with Ubuntu. So, any idea what could be the problem here? I even tried windirstats too see if any huge files that weren't supposed to be there were causing this, because I once had a problem on my own computer where I had this huge file that slowed down everything and wouldn't let me delete it until I did so in safe mode and then everything worked perfectly again.also, at the boot up menu, there are two loaders. one for vista, one for windows 7. windows 7 just starts up 7, while the vista loader goes to some menu thing that looks like it was booted from a disc.1.it has the options to reset to factory settings and format the C: drive 2.has the option to reset, but keep data

Crashing/slow After Installing Video Drivers, Beeping Inside Case

Oct 31, 2012

Recently started having an issue where once windows login screen comes up I can hear beeping coming from my case. Then once I try to login I can hear hard drive try to spin up and system will freeze every time I hear hard drive spin up (every 5-15 seconds) during login. Sometimes this persists, sometimes it goes away within a few minutes and the system runs fine but I can still hear beeping from inside the case. Other times I get either a complete lockup, a BSOD, or the computer restarts itself without any warning.

I don't have any of these issues until I install graphics drivers.

-I've tried testing memory in windows memory diagnostics w/ 4 passes it came back w/ no errors. -I tried a clean install which runs fine until I install graphics drivers(I've tried multiple different versions all have the same issue) -I tried installing a new hard drive but am still having the same issues.

I've tried to listen where the beeping is coming from but I'm having a hard time isolating it. It's fairly short, rapid and somewhat faint.

Samsung Laptop Freezes On Windows 7 Startup Screen

Nov 29, 2012

I just picked up a used Samsung Series 3 Laptop and had an issue with the keyboard not working properly. While reinstalling some drivers the computer re-started itself and then proceeded to freeze on the "starting windows" screen. I tried to run the windows repair option, it boots into a green background which says'please wait'...well I waited and waited and nothing happened so I kept retrying it. Eventually I left this on for a half hour or so and it actually finally went into the windows repair option!

I chose to re install windows from the partition and thought everything was fine, it went through the downloading and installing of those files and restarted, froze on the 'Starting windows" screen. I left it there for 40 mins plus, thinking maybe it just needed time, the only thing it did was reset itself after 30 or so minutes and froze again. I tried going into Bios and resetting the defaults, I don't even care about the keyboard not working anymore, I just want to get the computer functioning again!

Windows 7 Toshiba Laptop Freezes Up For Seconds After Showing Desktop

Dec 12, 2011

In the last few days my Toshiba Satellite L745-S43210 hasn't been working right. Recently it won't boot up properly. It started to boot up and then it would freeze up seconds after showing my desktop. I managed to go into safe mode and use msconfig to change start up programs and turn it to only the essential items. After that it worked and I tried turning everything back on and it worked fine last night. I assumed it was just overheating from being used so much in the last few days. Now today when I tried starting it up I was able to enter my password but the screen went black with my mouse pointer working. I turned it off and tried again a few times before going into safe mode.

I went back into msconfig again and turned it back to only essential programs and I performed a virus scan with Super Anti-Spyware and Malware Bytes and the only thing that they found were cookies. I cleared them out and booted up windows again and it worked fine. Now I am trying to select only certain programs and choose only the Microsoft, Intel and Toshiba programs/services and now when I boot it up I don't even get the the text box to enter my password, it just shows the blue windows start up screen. Right now I am using Safe Mode With Networking to type this and try messing with start up programs again.
