Why Does Windows SLOW Down While Installing, Extracting, Copying Etc

Mar 29, 2011

I have an enigma with my PC. When i try to extract big files, copy, or install (games or anything) my pc becomes irresponsive and generally very SLOW. For sometimes I even cannot browse on internet, because firefox becomes very unstable.Recently i bought Assasin's creed brotherhood and while i was installing my pc was almost usseless. After installation i started the game and it was NOT playable, even the menu was usseless (cursor was very laggy, and impossible to control, and everything worked maybe at 2-3Fps)Strange thing is when i start task manager (c-a-d) my cpu ussage is at max 25% and memory at 55 max)notice that I can play assasin's creed 2 all maxed at 1920x1080.

Self Extracting .exes Not Installing?

Mar 5, 2011

When trying to install the Firefox 4 beta, the self extracting archive (Firefox Setup 4.0 Beta 12.exe) won't install. It would extract the archive into the temp folder, but the setup won't activate. I looked into my C:UsersDawnAppDataLocalTemp folder while the archive was extracting, and after finishing, the temp folder just auto-deleted.

Windows 7 Is Very Slow At Copying Files Compared To XP

Mar 2, 2010

Yesterday I needed to copy some data stored on a DVD and it took more than ONE hour to transfer the files (11250 files and 151 folders for 625MB) to the hard drive.

I booted on my WinXP partition (so the very same hardware was used) and it took 20 minutes for it to complete the same task.

The data I needed to transfer were full of very small files and although I could hear my DVD player spinning at full speed on WinXP, it was very choppy on Windows 7 as if it was constantly seeking the files on the disc.

Windows 7 Extremely Slow While Copying Large Files Between Partitions

May 27, 2009

Everything is so slow e.g. opening of FireFox, opening of Excel, opening of Task Manager etc. While I'm copying 750GB of data from one partition to another partition, why? I'm running Windows 7 x64 7100 on a separate partition and I have a Q6600, 4GB ram and 5 X 1 TB WD Black edition drives...Task Manager is showing 33 running processors, 3 - 5 % CPU usage and 1.35GB of ram usage. Is this a Windows 7 bug? Windows 7 is super fast when I'm not copying/transferring large files between partitions!

Extremely Slow Copying Speed Over The Network

Dec 10, 2009

I have 32 bit Windows 7 enterprise edition installed on DELL Inspiron 1525 with 4 GB RAM.

I am facing the issue of extremely slow copying speeds. The copying speed hovers around 4-5 Kbps.

Other XP machines are able to do this real fast. I updated from Vista, believing this problem would've been solved in Windows 7... but this is a big disappointment. for all the hype created.

Is there a solution to this..

Laptop Slow / Freezes Since Installing Windows 7

Feb 24, 2012

My laptop used to run XP, something got corrupted and I got the blue screen of death. I took it to my brother (who is a network administrator) to fix it. He couldn't figure out how to fix or restore whatever system file was corrupted in XP, so he backed up my documents & program files, and then installed Windows 7. He then dumped all of those backed up files into a folder on my C drive called OLD FILES. It has been super slow and occastionally freezes since that time.

The C drive is almost full. I am certain that I have multiple copies of the same files and programs, and have the files for old software that I do not need or use. I cannot uninstall many of them because they were not installed, they were copied. I have tried many utilities in an attempt to find the duplicate files, or to clean up old data, and to speed up the system, but I only see minor improvements

Also, I have very little free space on the hard drive. however I am so afraid of deleting the wrong file or program and being back where I started when it crashed. I need advice on what I should do to fix this situation. Should I leave the OS as is, or change back to XP? And how can I determine which program filess are actually being used and which are duplicates?

I have thought about just buying a new laptop but that is not really an option at this time. So what do I need to do to make this laptop A) run faster and B) clean out all those duplicates and extra files I do not need.

Extracting MIG File On Windows 7?

Mar 25, 2011

I have an XP laptop and a Windows7 desktop. I wanted to reinstall xp on the laptop and did the mistake of using WET to transfer files to a stick as an MIG file only later to discover that xp doesn't recognize this file. Windows7 recognizes this file. But if I double click on this file it immediately starts copying the files (at least it displays this message and starts spinning). I then cancelled the action as I didn't want to extract into my Windows7 desktop. How can I extract the files into a separate folder so I can then take them to the laptop and transfer.

So far smaller RAR I have no issue. I have tried extracting the same under different PC (OS Win XP) but without any issue. Which I believe not the RAR files been corrupted by itself. The corrupt files seems to be random.. Sometimes, I manage successful extraction, but sometimes I don't. I have the same problems even after clean installation. I have run memtest without any error. So today I just went ahead and reinstalled Windows and the speed returned for the most part. Slow USB 2.0 Transfer Rate InSce Installing SP1

(I'm on windows 7 ultimate 64bit.) The thing is that it happenned in a particular moment, i was transfering files to my external hard drive the same day i installed Sp1 and in the beginning of the transfer the transfer speed was normal, around 60mb/sec. Then my Internet security software (Eset Smart Security) tells me that a process has changed in i think it was taskhost.exe (i am not 100% sure but i know it was a windows process), it ask me do i accept it, i press ok accept the change and then i saw my transfer speed slowed down right away to something like 20mb/sec.

What Is Up With Extracting Files

Jan 27, 2011

Trying to figure out why everything I have tried to download is unsuccessful because there are plug-ins missing or else they need extracting and I can't figure out how the heck to do the extraction thing and it is seriously stressing me because I got stuff I need to do and all I'm doing is spending time trying to get the software i need to do my "stuff" but I can't because they all need extracting.Used to be you just downloaded something and it installed and that was that. How the heck did I end up with this program thing that has tools including extraction and lists all the sub files? Where did it come from? it doen't say what it is so i tried to get a screenshot of it and attach it here but the attachment wouldn't work and so then I lost all what I typed looking for that and now I'm back retyping and i'm being technologically challenged and up until today I never though maybe I have alzheimers because i'm getting nowhere?

Crashing/slow After Installing Video Drivers, Beeping Inside Case

Oct 31, 2012

Recently started having an issue where once windows login screen comes up I can hear beeping coming from my case. Then once I try to login I can hear hard drive try to spin up and system will freeze every time I hear hard drive spin up (every 5-15 seconds) during login. Sometimes this persists, sometimes it goes away within a few minutes and the system runs fine but I can still hear beeping from inside the case. Other times I get either a complete lockup, a BSOD, or the computer restarts itself without any warning.

I don't have any of these issues until I install graphics drivers.

-I've tried testing memory in windows memory diagnostics w/ 4 passes it came back w/ no errors. -I tried a clean install which runs fine until I install graphics drivers(I've tried multiple different versions all have the same issue) -I tried installing a new hard drive but am still having the same issues.

I've tried to listen where the beeping is coming from but I'm having a hard time isolating it. It's fairly short, rapid and somewhat faint.

Extracting Hidden Files From Old Drive

Apr 30, 2012

I have backed up all the files and emails from a faulty hard drive before inserting a new one and setting up Windows on it. However, because the drive was in such a bad way, I did't run Outlook to extract the email account settings - and now realise that these are hidden in the registry. I have tried importing the registry files (after doing some research on this), but cannot find the registry section which contains it.

Now that the the new drive is fully running (apart from the email account settings) - Windows Vista upgraded to Windows 7 - would it be too risky to re-insert the drive in the laptop to run Outlook and get the settings recorded ? I am concerned that it will cause error messages when I re-insert the brand new drive. I have thought about booting up a computer from the faulty drive, but think it may refuse to load because it's a different PC to one it came out of (Dell XPS M1530) - is this the case ?
