Can't Access One XP Pro Computer
Dec 19, 2009
I have 4 computers. Two with Windows 7 and Two with XP Pro. My XP machines can access all the others including the Windows 7's. One of my Windows 7 computers can access all but one of the XP machines. All computer workgroups are the same and all the names are correct. Any ideas why one of my Windows 7 machines can't access one of my XP machines? All are hardwired thru a router, not wireless.

I've got a total of six computers on my network - 2 running Windows 7 and 4 running XP. With the exception of one computer, all of the machines see each other on the network and can share files. One XP machine does not see the shared folders of my new Win 7 machine but does list it as a "workgroup" computer. When I try to access the computer itself I am prompted for a password. Passwords are turned off on the Win 7 machine and none of the other computers on the network get prompted for passwords to access this computer. I assumed that it was due to the setting on the Win 7 machine but they are all set for sharing with everyone on the network. Passwords are off. Firewall is off as well. The network name is consistent across all the machines. I've been unable to find any information on why just one computer on the network would be prompted for a password to access another computer on the network.

I just purchased a new computer with Win 7. All my other computers have XP or Vista and I can share files but the Win7 computer cannot open files on the Vista but can open files on the Xp computer. None of the other computer can open files on the Win 7. All are on the same workgroup and can see the Win 7 but not open. I have enabled all file sharing that I can find.

I put a new hard drive in my ThinkPad T500 and installed Windows 7. I put the old hard drive, which has Vista installed into an external USB box. I can mount the drive, but there are some folders that I can't access. I also cannot seem to give "Everyone" access, or to take ownership. Is there some simple way to override the NTFS security settings?

I have Windows 7 to the point now where I can access computers on our network but they cannot access the Windows 7 computer. Our XP PC sporadically can see our Windows 7 computer but that's all, it doesn't see the network printer connected to it. I've named and renamed the printer, added XP drivers to Windows 7 and I'm completely baffled at this point. (I have the firewall off on the Windows 7 PC). So far I'm not thrilled with Windows 7 and hope they don't attempt to release it anytime in the near future, my computers and network has always setup easily and ran flawless with XP and Vista but with Windows 7 it's been a battle all the way.

After finishing, I disconnect the remote desktop session without logging off the work computer. When I go to work, my work computer is powered on but the screen is black. Jiggling the mouse or CTRL ALT DEL does not make the screen come alive.

how to access my desktop that is on my Homegroup. When I try to access my desktop from my laptop I get asked to "Enter Network Password". The password I used for my router and my homegroup are both not working and I tried changing my homegroup password without avail.
Can I just completely turn off the homegroup password? On both computers I have opted to turn off password protection for the network but it doesn't seem to change anything.
BTW, I can access my laptop via my desktop but just not vice versa.
I have tried to find user guides but nothing seems to help. I can't even leave the homegroup on my laptop which I find weird.

There are now several ways of locking a computer to block things like internet surfing during a specific time period. I have unfortunately found a problem. All that one needs to do to defeat these programs is to change the system time. I use Kaspersky which allows blocking applications from operating. Is the system time controlled by an accessible software so that it could be blocked from being changed?

My idiot self put a password on my computer to protect it temporarially, then by gods sense of humor the computer shut down through loss of pwer. But the password didn't save correctly and now I can't get on my account. It's the only user, and whenever I try using safe mode with command prompt, it goes to the user log in screen, which defeats the purpose. In short, I need to reset my passdword, while not being able to log on in any way through the username. I would rather not have to wipe my harddrive, I have no recovery disc, nor partition for some reason. If I have to I will wipe my harddrive then download Windows 7 again, but I need to know how to do that first.

I purchased a new HP Windows 7 laptop for my wife to take to France and England. The computer works perfectly here in the US! I have Microsoft Security Essentials running on it. All software and drivers are up to date.
Over there when she trys to browse the Internet using the hotels' WiFi she gets a message about certificates being expired. I assume this is the website's certificate. But she says no websites can be accessed.

I have a small home network set up with 4 PCs (1 laptop & 3 desktop). I can see all my computers in my networks but I cannot connect to one of my desktops using my laptop. All the other computers/laptops can read and transfer files without a problem except for the laptop connecting to one of the PCs.
Both the laptop and the PC that is asking for a network password are on the same version of Windows 7 Home. I have file and printer sharing enabled. All are on the same workgroup. I have firewall off and I have turned off password protected sharing yet when I try to connect or print from my laptop to the one PC it asks for a password and I can't figure out why.
This only started recently a week ago. Prior to that never had this problem and shared files/printer without a problem

I have 3 computers running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
I connect them to a hub and set a workgroup name. Everything is working fine. All of them are able to see each other and access their shared drives.
However, once I unplug internet line (all computers still connect to the same hub), computer cannot see each other and cannot access shared drives anymore. Also, workgroup name is changed to 'Unidentified Network'.
What should I do to connect to a network without internet connection?

I have two computers both running Win 7, one in the bedroom and one in the living room and Id like to view files from the bedroom computer in the living room. They are connected via TPlink powerline adapters so a wired connection for both
I can access the living room PC from the bedroom PC via control panel/Network no problem
but when I try accessing the bedroom PC from the living room, I get the error message login failure: unknown username or bad password
I have tried the following:
-creating a new user account for the bedroom PC, and logging in using that account and password
-changing the advanced sharing settings in network and sharing centre to match exactly
Also, I can access when I Turn off password protected sharing but I am not sure of the security of having this setting off so I really want password protected sharing on

i have 3 computers - a laptop (vista wireless), a home theater pc (win 7 wireless) and my main computer (win 7 wired) with all my media files.i have a network setup and the laptop and the HTPC can connect to each other when i click their icons in network neighborhood. i can also connect to them from my main computer (QUAD-CORE) but if i try to hit the QUAD-CORE icon on the laptop or the HTPC i get - network path not found. if i type 192.168.1.100 it connects perfectly (i can see all my shared files so i don't think there is a problem with the way i have shared the files) i think my problem is that when i click on the QUAD-CORE icon it is looking for the ip address but something is broken.

A few days ago I was trying to copy a file to a usb drive and the computer froze. I couldn't access Task Manager and had to reboot to free everything up. Later when I tried to click on a game icon to open the program the computer froze up again and I had to reboot again. This has now happened several times over a few days. I have tried to find a solution but at at my wits end. I even tried system restore, but found there was nothing to restore, although I had created restore points in the past. I even tried installing an image of the system and other files, but that didn't work. Although I know a little about computers I am a novice at these sorts of problems.

I forgot to plug in my computer and the battery died. When I tried turning it back on, it takes me directly to:
"Startup Repair - Your computer was unable to start. Startup Repair is checking your system for problems. If problems are found, start up repair will fix them automatically. Your computer might restart several times during this process. No changes will be made to your personal files or information. This might take several minutes."
Followed by a loading bar that says searching for problems. After leaving this on for a while it gives the system restore option, however this just takes me back to the previous screen. I cannot cancel the Start up repair and I can't access safemode. After searching for over an hour the only solution I've found so far is reinstall the OS, however my computer did not come with the OS disc and I have school related files on the computer that I can't lose.
I am using a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6981 T6600 That's 9 months old with windows 7, Specs (To my limited knowledge) say:
C2D 56600, 4GB DDR3
16", 400 GB HD, DVDRW
Windows 7 P 64 Bit, 80211bgn
