I have two computers running Windows 7 and both belong to a Homegroup. From one computer I can access both computers and from the other I can't access the other. It say's I don't have permission but I gave it everyone permission when I shared it. I can't figure out why?
View 1 Replieshow to access my desktop that is on my Homegroup. When I try to access my desktop from my laptop I get asked to "Enter Network Password". The password I used for my router and my homegroup are both not working and I tried changing my homegroup password without avail.
Can I just completely turn off the homegroup password? On both computers I have opted to turn off password protection for the network but it doesn't seem to change anything.
BTW, I can access my laptop via my desktop but just not vice versa.
I have tried to find user guides but nothing seems to help. I can't even leave the homegroup on my laptop which I find weird.
The HomeGroup shares have been a recurring issue that I haven't been able to solve, but the really perplexing one is the shared folder issue which just cropped up. Some of my shared folders still work, but e, g and h (music and video respectively) for some reason spit back "Access Denied" on all of the other computers in my house, this is in spite of the fact that Permissions on them are set to Full Control for Everyone.With regards to HomeGroup shares, they simply don't show up no matter what I do, I'd like to fix that one too, but I'm not sure what I can do to fix that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving difficulty with a homegroup and file sharing: one desktop PC with the family's main documents (which are on a separate drive to the system) and two laptops which need to access those documents. I've got them all seeing each other, and they can see the folders in the drive, but when I try to add files or rename files, it tells me that I need permission. I've gone through the advance settings to make sure the correct permission is selected, they all have the same workgroup name and different computer names. Sharing the printer attached to the desktop is fine.

I want to write to the Program Files folder on the 32 bit system from the Program Files (x86) folder on the 64 bit system. All other read/write operations between these 2 systems are succeeding. I have set up full permissions on both Program Files folders exactly as with other folders: Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing > Share this folder > Permissions > Full Control for "Everyone". I suspect UAC may be intervening. Is there any way to defeat this? My final objective is to automate synchronization between a few selected areas in these Program Files using my backup utility, SyncBackSE. It kept failing based on access denied, so I tried to drag & drop manually via windows explorer, and this is also not allowed. don't focus on questions about SyncBackSE - I am seeking help getting permission to move & change files via explorer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just added a SSD with a clean install of Windows 7 Pro 64 to my Dell XPS 630i.I designated the SSD as my C drive and kept the original 500GB HDD as a slave under XP Pro SP3 (as drive E) for use as data storage. The issue I am having is accessing those data files. I have administrator access (sole user) but I get an incorrect permissions message when I attempt to access any of the HDD files.
View 4 Replies View Related'm just asking straight out. [code] When I am on the laptop, I cannot cut & paste/move or delete files to or from my main PC. When I am on my main PC, I can manage all my files and actions on my laptop HD. When I am initiating actions from my PC, I am god. When I am initiating actions from my laptop, I am nothing, as I do not have permission on my destination folder.I have been doing all kinds of work arounds. I'm sure you know the drill. But I have hit a point in my setup (mainly because my laptop HD isn't huge, but my main PC HD is huge, I do a lot of media stuff, and I do 95% on my laptop) where the workarounds are such a pain, I just can't stand it. If I could directly read and write to files on my PC HD, my world would be so much simpler.I probably won't be able to remember everything, as I've been working on this on and off for quite a while, but off the top of my head:
-Set all permissions on homegroup sharing to be as permissive as I can
-Turned off password protection for sharing
-Even though UAC is turned off on both computers, I tried a "take ownership" program where I took ownership of the destination folder
-I've tried accessing it through homegroup options and network options
-I've tried going "bigger" with the sharing by sharing the entire User folder
-I've tried going "smaller" with the sharing by sharing just one tiny folder on my destination PC
-I've done every option I can find on the right click "Share With" and giving full permissions to everyone
-I've gone through Advanced Sharing in Properties and turned on every advanced sharing option I can find, giving rights to everyone I can find
-I've run the Network troubleshooter and the Homegroup Troubleshooter, both of which can see problems, but really don't know how to solve them.
-I've searched Windows knowledgebase, forums, googled here there and everywhere. At this point every permission I can lay my hands on must be open to people who don't even have computers, yet I can't access FROM my laptop TO my PC. Yet, again, I can access everything FROM my PC TO my laptop, which is only handy if my PC is the one travelling around the house with me.
My husband and I have been trying to get pictures from our camera (Fuji FinePix S3400) to the computer with the supplied USB lead. WE have been able to do so by taking the SD card and shoving it into the computer but we can't do so with the lead which we prefer to do. It seems wrong that we can't do that! With lots of going into all jigging around into files and setting we keep getting the message, "Access is Denied". We have even got into security of the folder and put in "Authenticated Users". We have an Acer that was bought with Vista and then converted to Win 7.

All computers have Windows 7 64bit and synched clocks. All are connected to a Home network. All 3 laptops detect that a Homegroup has been created on the wired desktop. I'm using the correct Homegroup password. All computers have discovery on. All computers have IPv4 and Ipv6 running. All services are running. Everything else I've read and tried regarding troubleshooting this issue haven't worked. All computers can see each other on the Network, but can't connect to the Homegroup.

I am trying to transfer all my old Windows XP based folders, files, music (itunes), pics etc etc stored on an external hard drive (buffalo mini station usb 3.0) to my new laptop that uses Windows 7. Only I am confronted time and again with these "access denied", "no permission" messages. I have adjusted security settings on some of the folders (on the external drive) to take ownership (which works) but surely you don't have to do this for every folder and all it's sub folders? This would take forever particularly on music folders as I have a lot i.e. each albumn is a folder. I just want to drag and drop my old folders from the external hard drive onto my new laptop using Explorer. I have even adjusted UAC settings down to lowest level, re-booted, but this does nothing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWith my Windows 7 residing on it's own on a new SSD drive, now I want to be able to fully access my 2nd drive, my old XP drive from the default Admin acct. created on Windows 7 initial install.
I can read from the 2nd HDD, copy to the new drive, but can't read / write, it just says I don't have permission.
My research so far reveals this TrustedInstaller does not give full blown permissions to a 2nd drive in a situation like this. I am thinking there has to be a way around this without having to be logged in as the built-in Admin always. I just haven't found it yet. It's rather confusing this security and file permissions. I ran into this problem with XP before when I took and switched out disks, and I just had to reset the permissions globally for the entire disk somehow.
I might log in again as the built-in admin and see if it gives me options to change settings for the acct. I think that is the way...
I have a standard HP Pavilion w/Windows 7 Home Premium . Boots to black screen with cursor only right after Welcome screen appears. The CTL/ALT/Del will bring up screen with Task Manager, etc. System will boot to Safe Mode but will not allow me to access Control Panel or any other items on the right side of Start window with the message "Windows cannot access.....You may not have appropriate permission to access this item"
Have been researching this for two days and have tried Repair Your Computer options offered in Windows 7 and restating from numerous prior restore points with the same result. Before I go through a full system restore. Most of the possible solutions I came across in my research are not possible to try because of no access to Control Panel.
I can't access my word files or word itself, I've uninstalled it and now I can't install a new version as I get messages saying I don't have sufficient permission. I'm not sure how to configure my user permissions. How I do this?

I'm using a Win 7 Pro desktop that is hardwired and a Win 7 Home Premium laptop wireless. Both current on all updates.My Comcast modem is hooked into a WRT160N that is hardwired to a WRT400N which is being used as an access point, and to the desktop PC. Both routers have the latest firmware. Both routers have the same SSID and password but use different channels. (2 & 6) Internet works perfect both wired and wireless through both routers.The homegroup has been set up through the desktop but I've removed and added homegroups on both machines multiple times. My problem doesn't go away. The homegroup works when the laptop is either wired or wireless using the WRT160N. It will not work at all through the WRT400N. I can be in the room with the WRT160N on the homegroup, when I move to the other router so the wireless switches to the WRT400N, it drops the homegroup. The internet stays connected just fine. Once it drops the homegroup, it can't find it until I go back to the main router.Both machines have IPv6 addresses, auto discovery is on.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 7 on both my laptop and tower PC, I share my entire D drive from my tower over the network (homegroup)... i like to keep a mirrored copy of the drive, so I can copy everything from the D drive to the laptop.Absolutely everything copied EXCEPT one folder. I have no idea why this folder will not copy... windows just says "you do not have permission to access"I've done this plenty of times before, never changed the attributes of the folder or anything. I recently formatted both of the systems so everything is nice and clean, no system problems or anything.
I tried moving the folder to another location on the D drive but it's still says I do not have permission... I try just sharing that particular folder, full control, but it sill says no permission.However, I've copied a few of the sub-folders to another location, and I CAN access them. So it must have something to do just with that folder
I was trying to lock off my external hard disk to everyone aside from my administrator account on my own PC. It seems that in the process I ended up locking it off completely. It now shows up simply as Local Disk - Unlabeled Volume 7, without displaying any information about it, and when I check its properties it shows no information about it,and the Security tab is missing. I tried to take ownership of it using take own from cmd, with administrative privileges enabled and UAC disabled. That gave me an access denied message. How I could access it, or reset the permissions? I'm using Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Theyre all connected on the same HUAWEI B260a wireless gateway, and theyre all under the same workgroup and connected within a homegroup Standard shared public libraries (music, picture..) are visible and accessible for all of them with each other.PROBLEM is @ network location
1) when i access from computer A to comp's B hard drive partition its all ok but it cannot access shared partition on computer C (but its visible)
2) computer B cannot access either one of their partitions
3) computer C can access everything and all All of the HDs partitions are shared?

I have setup a Homegroup for a desktop and 2 laptops. All computers have joined the Homegroup and the 2 laptops can see files on the other computers. However, when I try to access the other computers from the desktop, I'm asked to sign in. I enter the other computer user's name and since neither has a password I just click on OK. Then I get a message that says I don't have permission to access the files. Why am I asked to sign-in only on my desktop? Do I need to setup passwords on the laptops?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..
I am running into this issue of having complete access to one PC running windows 7 from another one that is also running windows 7. One of the PC's is a windows 7 pro 32 bit and the other is window 7 ultimate 64 bit. I have had them setup with public and dedicated folder sharing. But from time to time I find that a file I want to get off one or the other was not saved to a shared folder. I have been looking for a way to allow complete access from one PC to other one (going both directions). I use 2 PC all the times and it really depends on where I am in the house as to what one I am using as one is laptop and the other is a desktop. They are both on the same network. It is just one of the strange things that I have not been able to find a way to get complete file access without the use of software like Teamviewer or others like it.What I would like to do it just go to the network location in the windows explore to get the files I want from the other PC.

I am attempting to share files on a homegroup for the first time.I can create a home group on either computer, but I get this message when try to join the newly created home group from other computer: "Windows can�t join homegroup on this computer " In other words, both can create a homegroup, but whatever the one creates , the other cannot join. One important note is that one of the computers does not have the three network adapters the other has. It is missing a wifi adapter although it has a wifi port. Could this be part of the problem? Following are the 18 steps I have completed to date, all of which were redone by a "for fee" networking service except for resetting the router (I had already done this multiple times). These are not necessarily in the order I did them and I retried creating and joining a homegroup on both computers between each "fix." I checked the status and network map on both computers between steps to verify changes were registered correctly by both. Various corrections were made along the way, but none worked.

I would like to leave the homegroup but I get the error message "Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup." The homegroup was started on my desktop and I changed the password. I expected the laptop to detect that the password had been changed but it didn't. So I tried to leave the homegroup to rejoin with the new password but I'm not allowed to leave.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my comptuer about...2 months ago roughly, which i would think would reset the computers setting so i wouldn't be in a home group but reguardless i can't leave the homegroup that i'm in. i can't view homegorup password which makes me belive i'm not actually -IN- a homegroup but my computer THINKS it is. i've tried deleting the idstore.sst file and replaced it with the trouble shoot thingy but that didn't work.. If there is a way to completely reset the HG feature that would be great, or replace a file to kick em out of the home group or something.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo sometime within the last month or so I noticed my laptop was starting to act funny when trying to access files over the homegroup on my desktop--it was asking me for my credentials every time I restarted the computer, and wouldn't remember them even when I checked the box. As best I could tell it was using my computer's name as my domain, so when I typed in the username/password I also had to type in the "domain" of my desktop, which was simply its name.
Anyway, I didn't think much of it until recently I wanted to fix this problem, and I noticed more problems. I first removed both computers from the homegroup. Then, I tried to make a new homegroup on my laptop. But attempting this results in the error message you see in the thread title, and no error code at all. However, I can still create a homegroup with my desktop, and I can even join that homegroup from my laptop.
But after joining, I cannot access the video/audo/photo folders that are shared on the desktop and the icons for them are generic, not the unique ones for each folder type. However, once I share any additional folders from the desktop, I can then access all the folders from the laptop, once I have entered the same login information it had started asking me for weeks ago. Oddly, my desktop can access those same folders on my laptop without any trouble, as could my wife's laptop! Just to be clear what I have tried so far:
1. Deleting everything in the WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataRoamingPeerNetworking folder and rebooting.
2. Checking the correct services were turned on.
3. Ensured all computer names are different.
4. I tried two different routers, in case it was a hardware problem (one router is the one on which I had no problem using homegroups until a month ago).
5. Checking IPv6 is enabled, and adding the registry edit mentioned elsewhere to ensure it is enabled.
6. The usual homegroup troubleshooting, on both the laptop and the desktop.
7. Deleted all my Windows credentials.
8. Synced the clocks/timezones.
9. Tried using a wired connection. The desktop is on wi-fi as well, though, and has no problems.

Alienware M11x R3 w/Killer Wireless-N 1103
Linksys WRT-160N with DD-WRT (original router)
TP-Link WDR-3300 with stock firmware (new router)
I installed Windows 7 on my laptop, and I also have a desktop running Windows 7. I am trying to connect my laptop to my homegroup with the password for my homegroup, but my desktop will not reveal it. Is there any other place that I can find it?
