Guest Account Restrictions - Setting Programs And Folder Access Permissions
Oct 4, 2011
I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..

The computer (Notebook, Home Premium) had an option to press ctrl+alt+del to log in, and I wanted to change that, so I went to netplwiz and unclicked the option to require users to press ctrl+alt+del to log in.I restarted and then I realized after Flash player tried to update that the computer is telling me to enter an administrator password but there is no place to enter the password. After that, I also realized that the only user on the computer who is supposed to be the administrator, is shown as a guest account. While I was unclicking that option in netplwiz; I saw that the only user was defined as "boinc, administrator". I didn't much care about that at the time; could that boinc thing could be the reason for the only user being change to guest from administrator?I had to restore the computer like 2 weeks ago because of that (It is not a main computer, so it is not being used that much). How can I make sure that this 'guest' thing doesn't happen again when changing system settings? Is the 'boinc' thing the reason for this? Could it be another thing?

I have access to the Internet when I am on the admin account and I use to have access on the guest account as well. Today for some reason I start my computer up and the guest account no longer has Internet access. (using IE) Why could this be? Why would it happen out of no where? I use chrome on my admin account and it works fine.

With my Windows 7 residing on it's own on a new SSD drive, now I want to be able to fully access my 2nd drive, my old XP drive from the default Admin acct. created on Windows 7 initial install.
I can read from the 2nd HDD, copy to the new drive, but can't read / write, it just says I don't have permission.
My research so far reveals this TrustedInstaller does not give full blown permissions to a 2nd drive in a situation like this. I am thinking there has to be a way around this without having to be logged in as the built-in Admin always. I just haven't found it yet. It's rather confusing this security and file permissions. I ran into this problem with XP before when I took and switched out disks, and I just had to reset the permissions globally for the entire disk somehow.
I might log in again as the built-in admin and see if it gives me options to change settings for the acct. I think that is the way...

I was trying to lock off my external hard disk to everyone aside from my administrator account on my own PC. It seems that in the process I ended up locking it off completely. It now shows up simply as Local Disk - Unlabeled Volume 7, without displaying any information about it, and when I check its properties it shows no information about it,and the Security tab is missing. I tried to take ownership of it using take own from cmd, with administrative privileges enabled and UAC disabled. That gave me an access denied message. How I could access it, or reset the permissions? I'm using Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I recently had to reinstall (format and clean install) on my home PC. The admin account could access the internet right after the install. Once I added standard user accounts for each of my kids, those accounts can access the internet, but the admin account cannot.

I just noticed two of my computers are automatically sharing the entire user's directory with all permissions for everyone, I was reading up on this a bit before and it seems it's a Windows bug. I was wondering, since the password protected sharing is turned on by default, would anyone have been able to gain access to my computers information if they didn't have a user account / password or would they need an account / password no matter what the permissions are set to.

I'm creating a local group policy to lock down a Windows 7 Pro Workstation for use in the Staff room. It's the first time I've used it, previously I've worked a bit with AD. but I've been following on line tutorials and using google and I'm nearly there with it.But I'm stuck on one thing. My approach has been to remove access to pretty much everything apart from IE, Firefox and Skype icons on the task bar. I've got the start menu empty apart from the shutdown button, which is what I want but at the top of the start menu is the users icon/picture thing and if i click on it it takes me to "user accounts". I can't for the life of me work out how to get rid of the picture or just stop this happening.

I wonder whether this should come as a doubt at all, nonetheless, here goes:Are there any restrictions concerning the name one can give to an user account in Windows 7? Namely, I wished to know whether one can give the name "Admin" to an account to set with administrator privileges, or is such a name restricted to be used due to any eventual conflicts/confusion it may lead to in the Windows Registry? Windows 7 here is Home Premium.

My friend and I share my laptop. Recently I found out that he was watching porn on my computer. So I promptly confronted him, and told him to stop. Weeks later, he did it again. So I downloaded Norton's Safety Minder to prevent it. So this sneaky prick goes around and enables the guest account, and lo and behold, porn fest again. What can I do? I don't want to keep him off the admin account, because he plays games on here, but I don't want him watching porn on my laptop either. Is there a way to put parental settings on the guest account? I know you can disable it, tried that, he just re-enables it, then disables it before he gets off. I'm really frustrated about this.

I am trying to deliberately set a different date in my guest os to that of my host os. My host is Windows 7 (x64), my guest is XP (SP3), and my virtualization software is VMware Workstation (7). In an attempt to set this up I have done the following -
1). Added a line to the VMX file
2). Booted into and modified the BIOS settings of the guest XP os (setting the date back in time to the 08/08/2008) -
3). Disabled the guest XP os internet time synchronization settings -
When I first boot into the XP guest I see the following date - However after about 2 - 5 seconds the date is restored to that on the Host - how to set a different guest os date / time.

I am the only user on my notebook and, thus, have Administrator status. I am using Windows 7 home premium OS.I had installed a program which did not have a comprehensive help guide but had a website with a very good guide. So, as I have done many times with WinXP, I tried to copy a shortcut to the web page into the program's folder on the startup menu. I was rewarded with an access denied error. I also find that, without very indirect methods, I cannot access the all users startup menu folders.

This may seem like a strange thing to do, but today's SSD article reminded me of my desire to find out if this is possible - I have an unusual requirement that discourages me from even going the "small ssd as boot drive, large hdd for other things" route, unless I can find a way to do this. I do QA work for a distributor of downloadable games, so I like to be able to install the entire catalog (150+ GB), and put them into folders under "C:Program Files (x86)", so that I'll be able to see whether the UAC will cause problems for them (I install most of my other programs outside Program Files). Thus, to use ssd+hdd, I would need a way to apply the same restrictions to a folder on the hdd (and preferably also have any virtualized files directed to the hdd as well, but that's less critical).

Access to the path 'D:DocumentsMy GamesFar Cry 2BenchmarksResults5.23.2009 9.47.49 PM' is denied
I have the permissions in vista set correctly

I have this backup software (GENIE9) that doesn't work. The vendor tell me I have to deletesome files that are in C:users/programs/appdata. The problem is: even though I am the administrator, I cannot even view what is in that folder, much less delete any files withinit. The vendor (GENIE9) is totally clueless as to how to do this.Apparently the operating system has put some severe restrictions on this folder even for users that are administrators.

I don't know how, but my 13-yo daughter somehow managed to change the name of the Guest account on my notebook (running Win7 Home Premium) to "NomNomMonster" and give it administrator privileges. When I turn the Guest account off, the name shown reverts to "Guest", but when I turn it back on, the name is once again "NomNomMonster" and shows administrator privileges. how to restore the Guest account to its normal name and status?

Well I have guests visiting and like to keep the PC private, have an enabled Guest Account.
When it recovers from Sleep mode, or in switch user mode, the logon icons appear, mine the Admin has a password and the Guest. But importantly when the machine boots, the users including guest don't show.
