This may seem like a strange thing to do, but today's SSD article reminded me of my desire to find out if this is possible - I have an unusual requirement that discourages me from even going the "small ssd as boot drive, large hdd for other things" route, unless I can find a way to do this. I do QA work for a distributor of downloadable games, so I like to be able to install the entire catalog (150+ GB), and put them into folders under "C:Program Files (x86)", so that I'll be able to see whether the UAC will cause problems for them (I install most of my other programs outside Program Files). Thus, to use ssd+hdd, I would need a way to apply the same restrictions to a folder on the hdd (and preferably also have any virtualized files directed to the hdd as well, but that's less critical).
I found a way to apply images to folders, I have large collection of music/ videos and I know all xp users love the way folder display images but Windows 7 has hard time applying this.
This step has to be applies manually on each folder but works for me.
Steps:
1.Right click on a Folder >> properties (select)
2. Properties windows (displayed) >> Select Customise (last tab)
3. Choose File.. (under Folder pictures) >> select Image(.jpg) (Note: All my images are .jpg Format, dont have be to be called Folder.jpg)
Note: My folder is not customise to specific type, e.g. Music, pictures etc. I have left it as General Items. (OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7100) RC)
I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to: -deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..
I check it several times, went through every step on the web to changing the default installation folder, and no matter how many times I check it, save it, re write it, it won't save. It keeps installing on my SSD (C)
Wll, new to the forum but hopefully someone can help. I have Windows 7 Home Premium. In repairing the flashplayer problem, I must have disabled whatever system administrator privilege there is which allows one to click on links within word documents, websites, email etc. to go to other web pages. It now comes up with a message box which states "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effecton this computer. Please contact your System Administrator".How do I renable this capability in Outlook, etc.?
I am the only user on my notebook and, thus, have Administrator status. I am using Windows 7 home premium OS.I had installed a program which did not have a comprehensive help guide but had a website with a very good guide. So, as I have done many times with WinXP, I tried to copy a shortcut to the web page into the program's folder on the startup menu. I was rewarded with an access denied error. I also find that, without very indirect methods, I cannot access the all users startup menu folders.
My PC have two user accounts: Admin (Administration) and Guest (Standard).i sat time restrictions for Guest account.then, for testing, i restarted my pc and tried to log on with Guest account at certain time. but it showed me this error: "Your account has time restrictions that prevent you from logging on at this time. Please try again later" What is the reason? What should i do to solve it?
I wonder whether this should come as a doubt at all, nonetheless, here goes:Are there any restrictions concerning the name one can give to an user account in Windows 7? Namely, I wished to know whether one can give the name "Admin" to an account to set with administrator privileges, or is such a name restricted to be used due to any eventual conflicts/confusion it may lead to in the Windows Registry? Windows 7 here is Home Premium.
I had a few annoying problems with Windows 7 so I deleted the partition that it was on and went back to using vista HP64-bit the problem is that the directories that I was using for personal files seem to have taken some sort of security features from Windows 7 and now I am having problems with them in vista for example
Access to the path 'D:DocumentsMy GamesFar Cry 2BenchmarksResults5.23.2009 9.47.49 PM' is denied
When Windows7 ships, I will be installing it on my laptop (Dell Latitude D631). This machine currently has Win XP Pro installed on a SATA HDD of 120Gb capacity.
My plan is to remove this disk & put it to one side, and install Windows 7 64bit on a brand new SATA HDD. I have bought a 500Gb WD drive and ideally plan to create 2 partitions - one for Windows, one for my data.
My questions are:
1. Any upfront advice on pitfalls of this approach?
2. Any knowledge (I can't specifically find any data on this, having trawled all sorts of places) of any drive capacity limitation for my Dell laptop - I have heard of 120 or 137 or other Gigabyte sizes as a limit so am now a little concerned that my lovely new 500Gb drive may not be fully usable.
If there's any inherent limitation, what's the way around this? Or will the BIOS 'autodetect' and see all 500Gb or is there something I need to do in BIOS or elsewhere to ensure the whole drive is visible and usable?
3. Finally...can I use the Windows 7 install process to create the 2 or even 3 partitions successfully?
i have recently been stumped by an error i have never seen before "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" after a little goggling i found that it is an error usually associated with Microsoft express, i have tried a few fixes like changing default progs. etc. but with little affect as most windows functions respond with this error. but it is appearing on every file, program, or windows function that i open and use even when trying to run commands through "run" it has rendered my pc near unusable as there is virtually nothing i can change or do to remedy this problem. I'm logged in as system administraror, yet when I try to access links I get the message: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. How do I undo restrictions?
note that I have searched for a solution on this and I can only find reference to this issue when clicking a link within Outlook.
OS: Windows 7 64-bit Office: 2010 32-bit
Issue: When starting Outlook 2010 a pop-up appears stating the following."This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."I have gone through most of the recommended fixes for the link issue (ie Chrome / IE default and registry corrections for htmlfile reference) in the event that may be causing the issue. The only thing that is tied to Outlook so to speak is Sage ACT 2012 (add-in). ACT will run when running from start menu without any issue. There has been no apparent updates or changes to the computer (it was off over the weekend and all was working find on Friday).
Get this message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" I'm the administrator but how do I notify me? I downloaded I think was Adobe & Google Chrome came w/it I uninstalled Chrome same time uninstalled my others I have Windows 7 came w/it but when I checked it says windows 9 & has a long # for 9?
I want to deny all access to removable storage for standard users at our office on one computer. I've been able to deny that access in the user configuration branch of GPedit. However; it restricts all users, even admin, when I enable that setting. how to I get it to differentiate between users? Of course I want admin to have access and standard users not to have access.
I have some links saved in Microsoft word 2007 and now when I try to open them up using the control button and clicking on the link, I get an error saying: This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. It was working just a few days ago, and I haven't changed any settings and don't know what to do. I have Windows 7 64bit.
I've developed a application to apply visual changes and have other options, but the problem is that it requires logoff to apply the visual changes please provide some batch files to apply the changes without logoff.
Visual changes include:
frame transparency padding size and other registry operation
I've been having some bluescreening problems, and this one place I checked told me to install a couple of hotfixes. So I went to the places he indicated, filled in the stuff, got the links for the downloads emailed to me, and when I ran the file I downloaded, it unzipped a number of .sqm files.
I just installed XP mode for the first time. Should I apply all of the outstanding updates, or will they disappear the next time I restart, or is the answer something else?
I'm running a 64-bit system, and I can't get explorerframe.dll to update properly. I've disabled UAC, patched the system files, taken ownership of the files in System32 and in SysWOW64, and replaced the files with the ones I want after adding a .old extension to the ones that I want to replace, but nothing changes. The only changes that I see are from the theme files that I used. This has happened consistently with the five or six themes that I've tried.
Every time I log shut my pc down, it says there are the same 4 updates that will install. Every time I log on, it wants to install the same flash update. I tried to download latest video drivers, and when I restart the computer, the update hasn't been applied.
Currently I'm using Comodo Internet Security as a firewall and I'm planning to build a home network using Windows 7 Homegroup and thought that Comodo might be an obstacle in doing that.
So my question is, as a normal home user of Windows 7, do I really need a 3rd party firewall other than Windows 7's firewall?
I keep getting this message which says that Additional log on information is required.Sometimes i get this message when i boot windows or sometimes when i logoff and log into windows again.
I'm trying to install additional voices for Windows 7 narrator and other Text to Speech Programs. I have downloaded and installed this: Download: Microsoft Speech Platform - Runtime (Version 11) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details, and then few of these: Download: Microsoft Speech Platform - Runtime Languages (Version 11) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details (I am using Windows 7 64Bit Ultimate on a desktop PC) But I am not able to find the option to use these newly instlled voices for text to speech.
