not sure this really belongs to the network forum, but in the absence of a "User account" forum and given that my issue is about the "net user" command, I figured I would post it here.
----
I have a very weird issue here.
I am trying to enable the guest account via command line and cannot get it to work.
I am using the command "net user guest /active:yes" on Windows 7 Ultimate (and before someone asks, yes I am using elevated administrator rights on the cmd window).
The command is accepted and completes successfully, but when I go see in the Control Panel User Accounts it still says the Guest Account is off.
- Trying on a full, original Windows 7 Ultimate install did not work either (initially I was on a vLited install and I thought it was because of that, but no, it doesn't work with a full install)
What's even more weird is that if I type "net user guest" and look at the info displayed it does show "Account Active Yes", but even after rebooting the Guest account is not displayed on the welcome screen and is still turned off in the Control Panel.
So, it appears it absolutely needs to be turned on via the GUI in the User Account Control Panel. If I turn it on via the control panel and type "net user guest" in a cmd window, the information displayed is exactly the same as before when I attempted to activate the guest account via command line, with one exception: via command line it showed "Last Logon Never" but when turning on the Guest account via Control Panel it shows a logon date after "Last Logon".
I also noticed that after having turned on the guest account via the Control Panel, entering "net user Guest /active:yes" (or /active:no) will work as intended (after rebooting), it just does not work the first time if the account was never activated at least once through the Control Panel. Anyone else can confirm this, and is there a workaround or known solution?

I have been given a laptop to try and sort out. For some unknown reason the user account has changed from an administrator to a guest account. Tried logging on through safe mode but nobody knew the administrator password. I cleared the password and gained access to the system via safe mode. When trying to access the system via admin normally the admin account was not activated.
So safe mode again and reactivated it finally got into the system in normal mode but now the user that was guest that i want to make admin again con not be found. If i go looking in the users folder there user name and folder is there. If I try to create a new user with the same user name the system will not let me. I need to get it back. How to achieve this?

So I am very familiar with windows 7 and stuff, and for obvious security reasons I don't want to use a an administrator account just to browse the net and do day to day activities like most people do and then wonder why they have malware. So I have installed some software from the administrator account that was originally created during install and then I changed that account to a standard user account and created a separate administrator privileged account named admin. All should be good right? When windows starts up now in the standard user account that I want to use most of the time I need to use my password for certain startup programs like core temp i.e. you have to verify you want to them to run using the administrative password. What if I don't want to do this? I just want them to run without the password? I tried going in and changing the permissions to allow full control for authenticated users and my standard user account but it still asks for a password on log on.

I'm currently administrator of a couple different groups of computers at a university, and I've been looking into changing the layout of the logon screen. I've found a lot of information, but something that I have wanted from the start has eluded me. I'd like to set the logon screen (or welcome screen I suppose) to display only one available account: the guest account that I have personalized for professors or students to use (not the same as the default Windows guest account). I would also like to have the option to switch users at the logon screen, preferably with the on-screen button that says switch users which I can't seem to get to display using my methods.
System Specs All of the PCs I am administrating have some differences... Simply put, I have a bunch of desktops running Windows 7 Pro x64, and a bunch of NetBooks running Windows 7 Starter x86. I've made my attempts on one of the NetBooks thus far since I can carry it around. On Windows 7 Starter it seems that "Switch User" is disabled, but I think it is still in the PC because when I tried a Registry Hack that hides all user accounts except the one that was last logged into, I had the option to switch users, but only when the account I last used had a password. The guest account does not and cannot have one. Anyway, the registry hack I just mentioned involves going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE..... and creating a bogus key under the ProfileList key.
I also tried a similar thing to the above which didn't work, I can't remember what it was though.I have also tried hiding the default administrative account I made while keeping the other account visible, but this results in me not being able to log into that account from the Login screen, and the system will automatically login to the guest account because it doesn't have a password. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I need a way to get into the other account. This was done by changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOF... and adding the account to hide as a 32 bit DWORD. Don't hide all of your administrator accounts in this fashion, or you'll be screwed FYI.
The third thing I tried was adding an entry for fast user switching and enabling/disabling it, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOF.... and adjusting the "HideFastUserSwitching" key. This didn't seem to have any effect.I also tried various combinations of the above, but that didn't get me the outcome I was looking for either. This has all been on the netbook, but I'm looking for a solution that will work on the NetBooks and the Desktops.

My friend and I share my laptop. Recently I found out that he was watching porn on my computer. So I promptly confronted him, and told him to stop. Weeks later, he did it again. So I downloaded Norton's Safety Minder to prevent it. So this sneaky prick goes around and enables the guest account, and lo and behold, porn fest again. What can I do? I don't want to keep him off the admin account, because he plays games on here, but I don't want him watching porn on my laptop either. Is there a way to put parental settings on the guest account? I know you can disable it, tried that, he just re-enables it, then disables it before he gets off. I'm really frustrated about this.

You see, I've been trying to make a new use account my computer, but I've been unsuccessful every try. I follow the standard procedure, Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsUser Accounts , but that doesn't make the folder in, a) the registry, b) c:users<newuser> , c) User accounts password control (advanced tab) but it does show up in a) Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsUser Accounts , b) Command prompt (net user).
I need to make my brother his own account, and I am looking at selling the computer to a friend, but he's not very tech savvy, and it'd infuriate his mother
I have taken a screen shot of the case of the Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsUser Accounts and the advanced tab in User accounts password control (I assume it's what it'd be called), and the command prompt, and I have added as attatchments.

My account is a full administrative account. I need to create another user account for a family member. I go to the User section of Control Panel and add the new user, give the account a name with NO password and set to standard user. However, whenever I reboot my Windows 7 Home Premium machine, I get a red x with a message that says - "The username and password are incorrect." I can OK and continue to boot to my account. If I "Switch User" I can log in to the new account successfully. However, I continue to get the error message on boot instead of seeing the screen that shows both accounts so you can choose which one you want to log in to.

This is the tip of a horrible iceberg. Active links in the control panel don't open, as though I don't have permission to access the contents, although UAC doesn't appear. I couldn't install Paint Shop Pro and part of the advice was to create a new account (various reasons, not relevant to this post) but I couldn't. I have full admin rights. Elsewhere, device manager is empty (have posted elsewhere about this) so I can't check device conflicts. I contacted Dell support but had nothing useful back, except the advice that they don't supply W7 repair/reinstall software because it's 'preinstalled and so free' (really? thought I'd bought the whole kit and caboodle), I have to buy a new copy. I don't really want to do a fresh reinstall, although I do feel a bit unarmed without an actual copy of windows to hand

I can't great new accounts or activate the guest account, but was able before. When I create a new account, Windows creates the new user login icon. When I try to login to that account I get this error: "The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." then the account is logged out. The new directory is created under C:Users but there is on padlock on that subdirectory icon. The new user SID is not created in the registry Profile List, there is noting about the new account. The only change I can think of that could have messed things up is: I was logged into the administrator account, preparing to make a back up and manually deleted some files from my own unprivileged account. I think thay may have been some kind of system index files for photoshop, which I had uninstalled. I am trying to learn the differences between Windows 7 and Windows XP, I now see that deleting user (possible user-system) files is not a good thing at all. I cringe at the thought of changing something in the registry without really knowing what I am doing and I don't want to go back to the full backup I did when I first got the computer. If there is no direct answer then perhaps someone can point me in the right direction as to how creating a new user works.

Adobe CS6 suite was working fine when I crashed using After Effects. I now get crashes or locking when rendering in After Effects or Premier Pro. Adobe Media Encoder won't even launch. I created a new user account they all run fine (so far). Same thing on my old machine running CS4.
1) Fixing my original user account (registry edit? some corrupt file somewhere?)
2) Transferring or recreating all my accounts, libraries, shortcuts, etc. to the new account and delete the old one. Is there an easy way to do this? Currently using Windows 7-64 (Pro)

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64x and apparently the default user account (Owner) that I use is not working correctly. Unless I have UAC set to Never Notify, I cannot open Control Panel or UAC again. I have created a second user account as Administrator and it works correctly.
I would like to know if there is any way to fix this problem short of a clean install of Windows. If not, is it possible to move all of my settings to the user account that works correctly and delete the one that does not.

I would appreciate any help identifying the cause of extremely slow log on times for a user account on our family laptop. The machine is running Windows 7 - 64-bit version, and currently has 3 users accounts 2 admin and 1 regular. The regular account has begun to experience log on times that last for minutes (The Welcome splash screen prior to log on screen), while the admin accounts have no problems. I have seen other posts regarding slow log on times, but I haven't seen those which address the issue for a specific user account.
